My friend Richard Engel never gets to cover stories that make him smile. And so it was a rare sight today when we saw him smile during our live coverage of the explosive celebration in Cairo. He was in the giddy crush of humanity, doing his best in Arabic to ask the crowd to keep it down, while asking individuals to react to the still-new notion of an "ownership society." Then someone showed up with a dog and a rooster. Richard took one look, looked back at the camera, and broke into a wide smile.
What an 18 days it’s been. I thought of the awful night of violence we covered, I thought of our hastened departure from Egypt, and how I wondered about and worried about the future on our flight home. Much work is ahead--but for now, for the exhausted protestors, there is massive celebration in Egypt. They toppled their President.
Tonight, Richard Engel will lead our coverage from there. I hope you can join us.
