Kids cross border alone, fleeing drugs and gangs

More than 8,000 unaccompanied migrant youths – mostly from Central America -- have been taken into custody this year, double the number taken into custody at this time last year. NBC's Mark Potter reports.

By Mark Potter, NBC News correspondent

EDINBURG, Texas -- A cell phone call from a Spanish-speaking man who said he and others were locked in a house brought police to a dirt road on the outskirts of town.  There they found three small homes used as "stash houses" to hide 117 illegal immigrants, including 10 children, who had just been smuggled across the Mexican border into the United States.

One of the homes had barred windows and a padlocked door. "Approximately 50 undocumented people were inside the residence," said Edinburg Police Chief Rolando Castañeda. "There was no running water, very minimal food; it was pretty tough for them."

Texas is responsible for regulating the care of thousands of unaccompanied children crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. The Department of Health and Human Services is concerned about the future of these children.

Of the 10 boys locked with the adults inside the house, officials said, nine were unaccompanied, meaning they were traveling without their parents or adult guardians.

"They were being treated like animals," said Castañeda.  "There was a lot of desperation, there was a lot of fear in their eyes."

All the children were taken to a local hospital, apparently suffering from dehydration.

Child detentions double

Federal authorities said the number of children detained after illegally entering the United States is rising dramatically.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 8,327 unaccompanied minors were taken into the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement from October 2011 to May 2012, after being picked up by the U.S. Border Patrol and Customs officials. That number is more than double the 4,016 unaccompanied migrant children detained during the same period last fiscal year.

"Why this is happening we're still trying to figure out.  The kids are primarily coming from Central America, with Guatemala being the top sending country, El Salvador the second," said Wendy Young, the executive director of Kids In Need of Defense, a legal aid group.

With the flood of unaccompanied minors coming across the border, local law enforcement are most likely to be the first contact with these children.

Child advocates suggested many of these children, mostly teenage boys, are fleeing drug and gang violence in Central America. Another theory is that Central American and Mexican parents already living in the United States illegally, and who are afraid to return home and face the prospect of being caught by U.S. border officials, will often hire smugglers to bring their children to them, paying thousands of dollars per child.

"Children are typically not the ones making the decision to come to the United States. Either someone is forcing them to leave their country or somebody is sending them," said Young.  "As soon as a child crosses the international border alone, that should be a red flag to us that the child is in need and to remember to treat these children as children first and immigrants second."

The U.S. Border Patrol reported that so far this fiscal year it has caught 15,590 unaccompanied immigrant minors, compared to 10,776 this time in 2011 and 13,267 this time in 2,010.

Typically, children from Mexico apprehended after crossing the border are quickly turned over to Mexican authorities for a hasty return to their country.  Children from Central America are more likely to be taken into U.S. custody until their immigration status is determined and asylum claims can be adjudicated.

Shelters stretched thin

With the rapid rise in detentions of unaccompanied minors this year, federal authorities have had to scramble to find enough shelters to properly house them until relatives or guardians can be located to take custody.  One decision making headlines recently was the use of barracks at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, to temporarily house some 200 immigrant children.

Normally, U.S. Border Patrol agents would quickly hand over any unaccompanied children they catch to other authorities.  But recently they've had to spend a lot more time and resources caring for the children while officials try to find bed space elsewhere.

Stephanie Goodman, of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, said state officials received pleas for help this year from the U.S. government. "We got a call in late February this year saying, ‘Hey, there's an influx of children coming in and we may need your help in expanding capacity,’" she said.  "In early March it was sort of a mad dash -- ‘Can you help us set up shelters in gymnasiums’ and things like that, because we have these kids sleeping in Border Patrol jail cells."

Child advocates worry that the rise in children held by the government will make it difficult to properly house all of them and to find enough volunteer attorneys to represent them before immigration judges.

"It is really important to find a lawyer for them who can take the time, hear their story, develop trust with the child, develop a level of comfort and help them sort out do they want to stay or do they want to go home," said Young.  "The system is being stretched thin. We're in a crisis mode right now."

Both the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Customs and Border Protection declined requests from NBC News for on-camera interviews to discuss the issue.  When asked why they wouldn’t talk on the record, spokespersons for both departments said they were not allowed to explain the reasons.

Customs and Border Protection issued a written statement saying that while overall Border Patrol apprehensions have decreased 53 percent in the last three years, the Department of Homeland Security, "has experienced an increase in UAC (unaccompanied alien children) apprehensions compared to the same period in FY 2011.  This increase, however, is not inconsistent with historic migration trends and patterns, which are cyclical and vary month by month over a year."

A dangerous journey

Officials and advocates involved in the care of unaccompanied migrant children worry that the dramatically increased detention numbers mean that more children now are making the perilous trek from their home countries to the U.S. border.

"It's often a very harrowing trip, a very dangerous trip for these children, and it can turn into a very abusive situation," said Young.  "We have a lot of girls who we work with who are victims of sexual violence, kids who've been robbed, kids who have been abused by (foreign) government authorities or others who just prey on them as they're on the move."

Mike Vickers, a South Texas rancher and veterinarian was surprised to find two girls, ages 10 and 13, walking with two teenaged boys through the brush and onto a busy highway.

Dr. Mike Vickers is a south Texas rancher who sees young children trying to cross into the U.S. through his property.

"They told me they were out of a group of 32 [illegal immigrants] and they got separated from that group," said Vickers. "There was dirt in their faces, you could tell they had been sleeping on the ground, sleeping in the dirt, sleeping in the brush and haggard. They were just absolutely spent."

Vickers called the local sheriff’s office and the U.S. Border Patrol and gave water to the children. "They probably didn't realize how close they were to being statistics and being dead," he said.

It's a subject with which Vickers is quite familiar.  He has found numerous bodies of deceased illegal immigrants on his ranch, many of them victims of the extreme heat.  Last week, he encountered a 16-year-old migrant boy wandering on his property who took him to see the body of a young woman who had recently died there.  Her body was stretched out at the base of a tree.

NBC News

Lorena Rodriguez, 13, spent six weeks traveling from El Salvador to the U.S. border with an older sister and smugglers. She now lives with family members in Boston, Ma.

A more fortunate child immigrant is 13-year-old Lorena Rodriguez, from El Salvador, who now lives with her adult sister and other family members in Boston after enduring a grueling six-week journey with another sister through Guatemala and Mexico.  After being helped by smugglers to cross the Rio Grande in an inner-tube raft near Hidalgo, Texas, Lorena and her sister were apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol agents and sent to shelters.

Attorney Carlos Maycotte, who has volunteered to represent Lorena and several other child immigrants, said the word "ordeal" doesn't adequately describe the discomforts and dangers involved in a trip with smugglers to the United States.  "It is very difficult, it is very long. They're not getting to sleep, they’re being smuggled basically like cargo, hidden in the back of trailers.  It's not an easy way to go."

With the statistics released by the federal government suggesting an increased number of unaccompanied children are making the perilous trip now, many officials and child advocates wonder if this is a temporary situation or if more long-term child-care solutions are required.

"You are still just putting the Band-Aid on the situation when you just expand the capacity for emergency shelter," said Goodman.  "You are not really dealing with the issue of why are these children coming in, and is there a better way to handle it?"

Our government, at all levels, should take immediate action to stop the illegal aliens from coming through the Mexican border. This should include the new abuse of sending us their children, the same the Cubans did before, so that we take care of them costing us billions of dollars. New trick, very old problem. Stop the illegals as soon as possible.

Natalie Arizona tried to do what our federal government would not. They shot holes through SB1070 after it was modeled after federal law. The state took it upon themselves to protect America as when after they cross who knows where they go and what they do. Now that Obama is going to give amnesty to "children", they now are sending just the children. It is sick and heartbreaking to think what these children will go thru. Documentaries have shown damn near everyone who gets across with a "coyote" is raped. In Mexico border towns they sale backpacks, tennis shoes, hats and the morning after pill to all girls crossing over. When I say everyone I am including children and men too. It is vial and very risky for these folks. OUR BORDERS ARE NOT SAFE

Of course it is sick and heartbreaking. So What!! Not our problem. The Mexican government should be held responsible for the plight of THEIR Citizens. Where is Amnesty International complaining to Mexico about these abuses. Set up camps on Mexico's side of the border for these illegals. Caring for them is Mexico's responsibility. America's is keeping them out of our country.

Phew! Paul from NM, I'm glad you're not responsible or in charge of anything other than you opinion! Geography is one of the simplest things to understand. Mexico, Guatemala & El Salvador are three different places therefore the child refugees are not just Mexico's problem. If multiple countries are involved it should be a unified nations confronted issue. I think it's cute that you thought you were intelligent enough to comment on AI, drug wars and what should be U.S.A's primary goals/problems. I'm guessing international affairs, history, deductive reasoning and common sense aren't your strong points? Only a fool closes his backdoor on a raging fire, rumbling mud slide or roaring flood waters and says "this catastrophe is not my problem but instead my neighbor's". We are capable of making our borders impenetrable and can pretend it's not our problem and it'll be the worst decision our nation could make. A Nation that is a power house will undoubtedly fall if it ignores the people of the world especially the downtrodden. We should never be indifferent to the problems that affect many. By doing so we become vulnerable when the problem of many become the problem for all. Do you know that those who forget history are destined to repeat it?

Completely agree. We are not the world's child care center. Why are these people portrayed as victims? The U.S. Border Patrol did not do anything wrong by sending them to shelters, and American taxpayer's dollars should not be spent on developing 5-star shelters for illegal aliens. I understand that the conditions of their travels are inhumane, but what do they really expect from trying to cross the border illegally via smuggling?? If they want comfort and first class service, maybe they should reconsider getting visas the next time around.

"Long-term child care solutions" will only encourage more parents to send their unaccompanied children across the border. It'll only become America's advertisement to the world -- As long as your children can make it across the border, we will grant them residency, healthcare, education... you name it, even if they entered illegally. Bonus points for being unaccompanied and found in squalor conditions. Wow! Immigration has never been this easy. Why do we still have passports and borders? Why don't we all just go around the world claiming benefits wherever we go?

I really don't understand the rationale behind advocating for illegal aliens. No really, can someone explain to me why people who clearly break the law still deserve to be rewarded? Ridiculous.

The article seems to be doe eyed as to why this could possibly be happening. People are being killed daily. There is no hope South of the border except for the cartels - and that is a lose-lose suicide pact within 5 years. These people have NOTHING. They also have no prospects. There are two options:

1. Put up even bigger walls and stop immigration in its tracks (The US cannot support you)

2. Allow them in as US states. But you play by OUR RULES.

I once considered option 2 laughable, but I'm not so sure anymore.

Certainly, we won't give you a handout if you want to join us, but we will come and kill your Cartels for you and install a political system that has a chance to work.

Otherwise, there is nothing here for you that you don't already have back home. We too are broke.

Sunlite--nice speech. It would be a lot more impressive if you recognized that MEXICO gets over 60% of the LEGAL visas the United States issues every year, and Central and South America get nearly another 20%. Now, while you are lecturing about how a 'nation that is a power house' failing if it ignores the people of the world, ""especially the down trodden-- Perhaps you ought to think about how many down trodde people in the WORLD are worse off than ANY ONE who lives in Central American or Mexico.

HOW is it fair to those Ethiopians, Bangladeshi, Indian, etc people who are WAY more down trodden, and would love the opportunity to come here.

We already hand out one legal visa EVERY hear for every 300 American citizens. And sorry, but that is more than plenty.

We have an obligation to our OWN citizens to not let other countries ignore their OWN obligations toward THEIR people by dumping off their poorest and poorest educated people on OUR door step.

And those who forget history ARE doomed to repeat it. We allowed an AMNESTY in the 1980's, with the PROMISE that that would be the ONLY one, and the PROMISE that our government would SECURE our borders so that we would NEVER again be held hostage to people whose first act when coming there is to BEGIN breaking our laws.

And when the POTUS of the US gives the nod to his admin to NOT enforce the laws of the United States, what OTHER laws will they decide are ALSO not necessary, and at WHAT point do we become a lawless society that murders, rapes, kills, etc at WILL, like the one immediately to our southern border.

You like Paul, have no knowledge of foreign affairs nor have you traveled to any of these places you speak of. Considering we've had a hand in forming the drug cartels into what they are it's irresponsible and bad karma to now think we don't have the responsibility of helping clean up the mess of s* we helped to create. What was Holder just held in contempt for? You're proving your eyes are wide shut. When you don't talk to people, really talk to them from these places and hear what's going on or see it first-hand and don't do your own research and investigations to form your reasoning it's easy to declare what you think you know and still know nothing. step away from the smoke and mirrors.

Furthermore Momaid, if you have to make up your own statistics that just makes you look desperate and your opinion worthless. In the future make it a habit to leave any statistical information out unless you're certain they are accurate to the most current date and from reputable, multiple sources.

For accurate immigration statistics of legal permanent residence in the U.S. since the 1820s go here

and look at table 2 & for immigration based on origin of birth place of immigrants between 2002-2011 go to table table 3. After careful review, you can take a look here

at the visas that have been awarded to non-immigrants, meaning they are doing it the illegal way.

For visas awarded legally to immigrants go here

Notice how the numbers are not balanced by who is legally allowed to enter and who isn't. The overall sum (total) number of people legally immigrating from European regions since the 1820s still out numbers all the legal and illegal immigration of South American immigrants even with the current surge. This of course doesn't include all the illegal European nationals who visited and just simply enjoyed the States so much they just decided to stay. Don't spread inaccuracies and untruths Momaid and try to pass them off as fact.

Throw these kids back over the fence. It's not that hard. Screw the judges, screw the free food and medical aid, drag them back, kicking and screaming if you have to, across the border, and dump them. They can either run back into the desert to try getting across the fence again, or say screw it and stay over there. What I don't get is why they don't try to fight for their homeland, rather than invading ours. When things got tough in America, we fought. Why can't Mexico do the same?

Simple, they're lazy, and they know that our current administration wants to give them free everything, while taking it out of the pockets of the citizens who were born here legally. We are not a wealthy, all powerful country. I'm sorry, but we're not. We're trillions in debt, our economy is shot, and we need to focus on fixing those, not spending the wealth of other nations trying to court illegals.

Part of this is the fault of religious organizations, like the Catholic Church that turn their backs on the poor loyal American to feed people from the third world. As a Catholic myself, I was bombarded by "attacks on my conscience" all through my life.

FEED THE POOR PEOPLE OF LATIN AMERICA!

If you see how these people live once they're here and provided with documentation from countries like Mexico, you see how they can ROB AMERICA BLIND!

Brand new cars, houses, dish TV, cellphones, K-12 education, healthcare,......they're STEALING it all with the help of those foreign countries.

Part of the solution is to bill those countries for damages. Hold religious organizations responsible for aiding and abetting these foreign criminals. This attack on the US must end or CIVIL WAR is just around the corner.

This not counting the american citizens who have been under or unemployed for more then a year? Now that Obama just gave amnesty to more then 2 Million Illegal Aliens. And who will also give them work permits. While I would not believe much information that comes from Napolitano as far as numbers go. Just WHO is looking out for we American citizens Now that we will be competing for No jobs? If Obama announced that ANYONE here before the age of 16 can stay. Why do you think that we will continue to have these children show up on our door? And this girl from S.America in this story who is now living with her Sister and Other Relatives??Who do you think these (Other Relatives )Are? Parents perhaps? What exactly are you saying? That because since the 1820's immigrants from Europe outnumber those from Central America that we need to pay some sort of melting pot reparations to illegals? Well, the issue is at present and the point made by MOmaid is a valid one. If you want to talk about fairness for immigrants then we should implement a policy that treats all immigrants the same regardless of country of origin.

The truth is we are being overrun by illegals and this president of ours doesn't give a damn. All the Dems. want is future voters at our expense. The president and a lot of members of Congress are failing to uphold the Constitution of the United States and elects to only enforce laws that he wants to and avoid enforcing laws he doesn't. IMO that is a crime.

Once the illegals are here they seem to demand they be given rights that lawful citizens of the USA don't have. They are further rewarded for their bad behavior with added benefits at the expense of the taxpayers.

Somebody posted earlier that we were getting close to a civil war and he just might be right. Seems to me our government has turned against it's citizens in favor of foreigners. God forbid you mention the laws of the land or law enforcement around here as you will be labeled a Nazi.

We have a chance to change the direction of this country come November and if we don't we will all be doomed. There is such a thing as civil disobedience you know. I'm kind of tired of the minorities demanding this and demanding that without lifting a finger to earn it so lets see what happens when people that haven't taken a dime from the government decides to do so. Maybe it's time for none of us to go to work and draw benefits like so many others have done for generations.

We need to be immediately sending these kids back to their country of origin. The Us can not be the dumping ground for all the poor children of Central and South America. Our resources are already stretched beyond the limit just trying to take care of legal American citizens, we can not start taking on these additional drains on our resources. This new trend is a direct result of the Obama administration's policy towards illegal minor children. His policies are encouraging parent to ship their children to the US where they will get a free education, free housing, free health care, etc. all at the expense of the American taxpayer. These children may not have a very bright future at home, but that does not make them America's responsibility to care for them. Send them back and let their own governments support them, we are broke and can not afford to take them in.

Obama has spent more on border patrols and deportations than his predecessor ever dreamed of. This spending is included in his opposition's criticism of his numbers. The executive order is a recent event that had nothing to do with the stat about the doubling of kids coming in. Maybe a reversed "cause and effect"? So maybe we "rang the dinner bell" just because we are what we are, but not a specific thing we necessarily did wrong. Maybe stronger enforcement just inspires stronger determination and unbelievable tactics like sending kids by themselves.

As the poor get poorer south of us, more will try to come in. It looks less like a "migration" and more like an "exodus" from oppression to a promised land. They're more like refugees than illegal immigrants.

This is a serious problem both from a pure human standpoint and an economic one. But anyone that can't muster a little empathy for the kids after reading this article is an ass (not directed at you, Mr. P).

Let's call this what it is...HUMAN TRAFFICKING...HUMAN TRAFFICKING OF CHILDREN....

There should be no mercy for this crime....The parents and family who place their children at risk by trusting God knows who with their children should be charged and tried for these crimes and then deported. The Mexican, Guatemalan, Salvadorian etc. governments should be made aware of the crimes so they too can charge the person responsible for trafficking their own children as the cartels would traffic in drugs.

Countries around the world need to be put on notice that America will no longer tolerate the gross and dangerous practice of trafficking children and these countries need to be prepared to care for them and not allow their criminal and depraved families to continue their bastardization of parenting warping these children for the future.

Maybe if all the yahoos on the border with Mexico start utilizing their 2nd amendment rights, the issue of illegal immigrants would end, right ?

/s

You know that the situation where ever these PEOPLE are coming from must be pretty bad if they are willing to travel thousands of miles, risk being raped, robbed, beaten, starvation, dehydration and even death to get here. Maybe its time for all those southern evangelicals to take the words of Jesus Christ to heart, "I was starving, and you fed me," instead of demonizing people who just want to live.

Repeal the DREAM act.

I swear if I read another thing about legalizing Marijuana for Recreational use....

What the hell is wrong with you, does your life suck so bad that you need a chemical release?

For the record I AM against smoking alcohol and marijuana, Not because I am relgious, ( I am more agnostic than anything else), but because I personally am tired of dealing with all damn trash and smoke that comes about from people doing it. The cigarette butts on the ground that every smoker treats the world as their own private ashcan (both tobacco and marijuana.) The broken glass bottles and not to mention the damned cost to the households. Some of the people I've SEEN in my area that smoke and drink are also on the SNAP program. Now I am quite certain it is not everyone and there are those who need the SNAP Program to feed their children and make ends meet, however the moment that household gets alcohol or Tobacco or any other high priced recreational pharmaceutical, cut it off or take the kids away (so we can feed them) till their parents get their priorities straight.

Mac and Cheese and hotdogs (not exactly a healthy meal but doable) - $4.00 for 4? (just guessing here)

A pack of cigrattes: $5.00,

A case of bud: $16.00?

And parents buy the more expensive things.

As for the children who are illegally here. Do you honestly think their parents WANT to be seperated from them? Its just their homes are either so dangerous, or so poor they simply cannot feed or take care of their children. Children are refugees. Period. the Adults we can deal with in another fashion.

I've been following these forums for quite a while and the 2 things that stand out the most to me are the fact that everyone always bashes their government for decisions. Frankly if you have a better plan (feasible or not) then run for office yourself. If you are so heartless that you cannot feel the least remorse over the death of another person then, frankly I pity you. Too many people are so concerned about themselves. Sad state of affairs.

It is absolutley shameful that Americans, most of whom probably call themselves Christians, think it is OK to send little kids back into a violent, vicious drug run environment, where their parents have been raped, murdered and enslaved by drug cartels who use weapons imported from the US. They even have armored personnel carriers. And you think the parents should be able to fight these gangs? Your ignorance is amazing! It is sick! How about addressing the real problem, which is illegal drug use by Americans. The cartels are there because we support them with our drug money. Legalize the drugs, tax them. license the distributors, just like we do alcohol. That will ultimately do away with the criminal element, and let these countries return to normal standards of living. What would Jesus do? Not what some of you are suggesting. Some of you sound as bad as the cartel thugs in your disregard for human life. Consider what things could be like if we had spent that 2.8 billion dollars on job creation instead of the stupid border fence? How many jobs could we have created by putting troops on the border instead of a fence that the cartels go over, under and through anyway? Mr. Obama, tear down the wall!. Mexico is not our enemy! They are one of our most important trading partners. Your TV, computer and DVR, were probably made in Mexico, people! My daughter, working for a US trucking company, used to haul these electronics from Mexican manufacturing plants to our east coast every week! And where do you think your grapes, and tomatoes and watermelons come from most of the year? Mexico, Chile. Argentina. Get over the racism people, and face up to the real problem....your, and your neighbor's, illegal drug use.

Mick...that is just ridiculous particularly when these parents are paying the Cartels...who poison, rape, and murder...to transport their children. The parents and family members who would place their own children in harms way by promoting human trafficking in children are the lowest of low self-serving scum of the earth....they abuse their own to enrich themselves...they are selling their children into the debt of criminal gangs.

The countries that these children are stolen from need to take them back and do a damn sight better than their own families....These countries should be providing for their own children for the future of these countries...not playing the game with the cartels for ridding themselves of the least among them. They should be caring for these children not discarding them to cleanse their own culture.

Arizona law was shot down because it was made by stupid people.

And fake conservatives.

The problem is real, though. Sending or forcing a kid to cross the border alone is a whole other level of abusive parenting, or abuse to kids if it is cartels forcing them to run. It isn't going to be a problem that changes until there are viable, working nations so that people don't want to leave them.

Mexico is a joke. I wouldn't visit it anymore and it was a favorite place to vacation.

I don't care if the parents brought them we don't want them. Why doesn't the richest man in the world (their President) pay for everything. Mr. Obama you have made a mistake allowing them to stay here now we are going to see them coming over in the droves. Free food, welfare, WIC, housing, schooling and medical. I wonder if we put it in a different context, would people change their minds? What if all of the poor people from the southern states up and moved to New York and demanded they be taken care of at the expense of the state when they got there? Would New York openly accept an influx of millions of poor people demanding benefits of their system without expecting the government step in and do something about it to stop the problem? Of course, we're all Americans here, so we can move anytime we want (ha), but what if people from Mississippi who wanted better lives for their children just started shutting their kids up in the back of cattle cars with strangers and then had them walk across northern Pennsylvania to get to New York? Would New York accept the extra load?

Lu...this could actually happen thanks to Obaminal Care...Many States cannot afford the additional burden of the increase to medicaid that has been ruled optional in the Supreme Court....I would suppose that if families wish for the added benefit and qualify in other states we will see a migration of low income families to states who will abide by the new rules.

So yes those poor who will not qualify in those states who opt out will certainly go to where the Government will offer them every comfort. I certainly wish states who provided the extended care luck...after all they will have the support of Federal Funds from the bulk of tax payers and those imposed upon for not purchasing insurance to lean on.

It is the same principle and those states will find their population of illegal immigrants increase along with the needs of the working poor and those who cannot game the system in their home states.

America is largely to blame for Mexico's problems. "Vote for me and I'll set you free, follow the Children" Here it is folks, what you see happening in Mexico, is next right here in the good ole USA. These people need to go home and fight their own war. When your country is out of control and your children are not safe, YOU FIGHT. Washington, CANNOT help these people (Mexico) by giving them safe haven here. Some wars are fought for the RIGHT REASONS. That war will be here soon enough, Mexico needs to get a handle on the crime and illegal drugs for sale and use. America needs to help them pull the weeds (No Pun Intended) down there cause all those dirty little habits walk into our country everyday. I don't get it, America arms the entire world, fights everyone's fights, and you just gonna let this problem walk right across the border into open arms. Send them home and arm them, but they don't belong here. No Mas, No Bama 2012.

Your soapbox arguments are weak at best. I take it, you are immediately trying to adopt some of these kids? Or perhaps setting up a house next to yours for these wayward children? No. More likely you are sitting comfortably in your upper class suburbia home expecting EVERYONE ELSE to take on the burden of what you think is "right." Please understand that democracy means it goes both ways and not everyone feels the need to support everything. What about our own down-trodden? I have an autistic son, which is becoming so common nowadays it is incredible. What are we doing for theses special need people? The public aid available, if any, is very limited and generally varies from state to state. Please give me your knowing rhetoric on this subject. You want a cause? Let's help our handicapped get job and life skills before we go looking outside our borders. Because if the math is right, all these special needs kids are going to grow up and we need to figure out what to do now.

The uptight Right - being cognitively challenged - seem to have missed the point.

These are unaccompanied minors - children - THAT ARE BEING STOPPED FROM ENTERING THE UNITED STATES.

How dumb can the uptight Right become? The article focuses on doing exactly what the neanderthal conservatives want done - and - they are complaining about it?

I do not believe these parents are sending their children over here just to take advantage of 'the american pie' so-to-speak. Its more like they are refugees, people don't view the cartel as an oppressive destructive force like an opposing nation would be [i.e. Serbia with the Bosnians], but it is and it is unstoppable fueled by billions of dollars. All nations are supposed to adhere to the Geneva Convention and if they don't then they are tried as war criminals...the world needs to change its perspective and start going after groups that commit acts of atrocities upon people, no matter what kind of group it is. Frankly, if I had the misfortune to be born anywhere south of our border [Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador..etc] and reproduce [they don't have the resources to take the pill like we do] I would try to save my children by sending them elsewhere, all these people do is watch the people the love die, oh and starve. I do not propose we have an open border policy to try and 'save' everyone, that is not a healthy option for our country but I do think we should quit dicking around with the middle east and take a good hard look south.

When I read this kind of report I am both sad and angry. Sad because we could avoid all this by the enforcement of our immigration laws in all cases. Angry because the current President and his supporters can not understand the relationship between cause and effect. They don't comprehend the fact that their policy's are driving this disaster and endangering innocent children from Central America and Mexico.

I know it has all ready been said somewhere on this post but what do you expect when the President tells ICE and Homeland Security not to enforce immigration laws and allow undocumented people to remain in the United States who are under a certain age?

This problem will continue to escalate causing a larger burden on our strained resources to deal with undocumented children.

All of you who support the President in this decision should realize you are also responsible for the results of abandoned children some of whom will die in transport. You are also supporting sexual slavery, drugs, human trafficking, and the destruction of both the innocent children and our country. Every choice has consequences and this choice is already playing out before your eyes.

Perhaps I am naive to believe you will see the danger in allowing this circumvention of law to continue. The application of current immigration law in these cases protect the undocumented immigrants and our country and prevent the abuse of both parties. By continuing to give the impression that our country is "open" to all undocumented immigrants under a certain age you open the flood gates of abuse. Our current immigration laws would prevent this with the exception of selective enforcement created by our President through thoughtless executive orders. If you really value these children you would demand a return to the laws passed by the Congress and demand their enforcement. To create two sets of laws with one that winks at illegal acts sends a mixed message to the world. The mixed message tells them that it is okay to act illegally in the United States of America and the politicians support their illegal acts.

BS Nerm L...Yes these are trafficked into the United States with the passage paid for by their illegal immigrant parents and families. Yes we deport them and send them home and YES their home countries fail them when they are not willing to support these children of their own country to a better life in their own countries.....what responsibility do you truly think it is for these cast off children...I say it is their home country especially if they have been in a situation where their own family handed them over to the abuse and indignation of the Cartels or heartless coyotes. Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala etc. have a problem that they should fix...they should mobilize their own citizens to take these children and offer them something more than lackey for the Cartels. Shame on countries from around the world...China, India, Mexico, Nigeria, El Salvador for abandoning their own and encouraging the least among them to seek the attention of a trusting foreign nation.

So Nerm, what of those children that we will never hear of because of the trafficking....what of those who have died because their parents supported this underground enterprise? These are the ones with no voice....what of the children we do not know about because they died at the hands of their captors...because they died to feed their family or parents greed to suck resources from another people....It is time that people stop blaming the United States for the ills of third world corrupt countries and the people they spawn....Because these adults who sneak into American are doing nothing more than importing their own broken, corrupt system of values are willingly placing their own children in harms way for their own profit.

@Notsosure10 -- I partially agree. The failure is in the home countries - but - the United States has attempted to help improve conditions in those countries.

Why did we allow NAFTA to be hijacked by raiders, traders, and profiteers? The idea behind NAFTA was supposed to be to increase trade - and - help grow the economies south of our border. China, South Korea, Malaysia is NOT part of North America.

The United States maintains prohibition on illicit drugs and drug trafficking. A very, very large portion of our prison population has been incarcerated on drug crimes. The United States spends enormous amounts of money to intercept drugs and pay for prisons.

The United States provides enormous amounts of money in grants and foreign aid to Latin American countries for the purpose of developing their economies.

The United States has been spending enormous amounts of money to increase border security. The United States has constructed fences across the entire borders of New Mexico, Arizona, and California. The United States has increased border patrols and are increasingly turning back those that attempt to cross our border.

The United State's greatest obstacle to improving economic conditions in Latin America and encourage people to stay in their home countries - has been ourselves. There is too much profit to be made from enticing Latin Americans to enter the United States illegally.

Gotta love MSNBC's willingness to ignore reality in order to put it's mindless liberal propaganda spin on everything:

Headline: "Kids cross border alone, fleeing drugs and gangs"

Reality: "Another theory is that Central American and Mexican parents already living in the United States illegally, and who are afraid to return home and face the prospect of being caught by U.S. border officials, will often hire smugglers to bring their children to them, paying thousands of dollars per child. "Children are typically not the ones making the decision to come to the United States. Either someone is forcing them to leave their country or somebody is sending them," said Young. "

Kids fleeing drugs and gangs ..... oops, I mean more criminals being imported by their criminal parents who abandoned them to enter the U.S. illegally.

P.S.

"Why this is happening we're still trying to figure out. ... said Wendy Young, the executive director of Kids In Need of Defense"

Wow, really? She can't figure out that a U.S. president refusing to enforce America's borders (and suing Americans who try to) is causing a tidal wave of illegals?

Why do people move from one country to another country? For the opportunities that that other country may provide like work, safety, security, shelter, food, clean water, education, healthcare etc.

Having read many of the postings, it seem that most folks are into blaming the present administration as if this issue have not been ongoing for the past 30 plus years. At one point with the influx of people illegally and legally, it was even worse than now, eg. the Cuban influx in the 1980-1990s, when Cuba opened its door and allowed those folks who wanted to leave to do so and they came in droves, then we had the influx with the fall of the Soviet Union as a union etc. We have also had folks from the Middle East, Asia, Europe and from Africa etc seeking asylum as well as economic opportunities and the rest of it too...especially before, during or after a civil war, or major ethnic conflict or due to declared war.

Except for the folks from Cuba -who came on all manner of floating devices- those other overseas people had to go through security screening and obtain a passport and some form of visa/entry permit to enter the USA. After all their mode of transportation, due to distance, was by some airplane or other and through immigration screening at the airports.

The ongoing problem though seem to be the influx of folks from countries to our south, where those who are able and want to take the enormous risk, try to cross the border into the USA illegally. It was noted in a doccumentary where folks from Cuba seem to be now using this route to get into the USA also. Most of these folks do come for economic reasons, while in the past there are/were those who did so to flee persecution of various types, political upheaval including death squads etc.

From the look of things it is more for economic reasons than for any other reasons, that folks cross the southern border into the USA these days. Drug violence has been ongoing -waning and increasing- over the many many years, and is not a symptom of something that is just happening now in particular. So this is nothing new.

Perhaps what is new is the intensity of the drug violence which is being fuelled by the increase in poverty and in access to more and more weapons- especially the availability of and to obtain high velocity/capacity weaponry- that would be more used in the war theatre- and the willingness to use them by all sides.

With the access and availability to/of these sophisticated weapons ever increasing, and in which both or all sides are being armed equally, plus the weakening of gun laws in the USA, has resulted in these weapons being able to be easily bought in the USA and smuggled into the hands of the folks in the drug trade to our South and even to countries in the Carribean/West Indies where violence seem to be increasing with the level of poverty being experienced.

So poverty and the lack of access to jobs, a livable wage, good or any education, affordable or decent housing, healthcare, family planning/birthcontrol- leading to more kids being born into poverty and lack, overcrowding, and lack of public safety nets measures, the increase in income disparity etc results in lack of access to upward mobility opportunities etc in those countries for the many, and do play a part in the violence that we are seeing these days, as folks do whatever to survive which then continue to fuel the poverty and violence cycle in which they are locked imo.

To continue to fight this war on drugs and the ever increasing violence without addressing the root problems that cause it in the first place, is just a waste of time and resources imo. The war on drugs was declared in the 1980s and with all the resources that have been thrown at it over the past 30 odd years have done nothing to decrease the access to drugs, guns and increasing violence from the look of things. If anything it seems to have amplified it and made the problem worse now, especially with the more and easier access to certain weapons.

But that is the problem with uncontrolled capitalism without a conscience, where anything goes, and everything has a price and is for sale to the person or persons with the money to pay/buy it. The only value a humanbeing has is the unit of work it can produce at the cheapest cost, or the value of its body parts eg kidneys, lungs, tendons, liver, eyes etc or even its abilty to reproduce for profit. The more income inequality or the higher the disparity in wages/wealth between the rich and the poor/middle class, the more violence will result from the look of things imo.

So, how do we solve these problem? It certainly cannot be solved by the USA simply closing off the southern border and by also closing off our ports and surrounding shores. If that is the only solution that folks believe would or will solve the illegal traffiking of humanbeings, drugs, guns and the resulting ever increasing gun violence problem, then they should read "the Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allen Poe.

The thing is... that all these illegal activities and the resulting now ever increasing gun violence, from easier access to guns legally and illegally, is already ongoing inside our borders.

So, how do we solve these (socio-economic) problems here and abroad, or at least starting with here in the USA?

And, do we really have the will to implement and follow through on the solutions whatever they may be and with whatever it may take?

Or are we just going to continue to do the usual 'blame the other guy', while find fault with the solutions thing?

What are we as citizens going to do about our complicity in the continuation of the gun violence and the traficking of guns and ammo, and thus all the other illegal activities e.g. like the human trafficking, teenage prostitution, slavery, sweat shops/enslavement etc that it is/may be used in, including in murders, suicides, to intimidate others in robberies, home invasions, road rage and the like- when we agree with the further weakening of the gun laws, with our shouting about our 2nd ammendment rights should not be impringed upon?......Until the gun violence etc hits close to or in our own home, then we busily and loudly blame the federal government, the Justice Dept and the Serve and Protect folks -who we continue to underfund, lay off, pink slip, downsize,- while others take it as an opportunity to push for even more guns acquisitions and even weaker and crazier laws - e.g. that 'Stand your ground law'- as if that solves the problem or anything.

Well from a capitalistic point of view, weaker laws = more gun sales to whomever including to the criminal elements, the mentally ill and others who should have no access whatsoever to a gun much less a bullet eg like young children, in the first place. More gun sales and demand = more money and thus solves revenues decline for gun manufacturers and put wind under the sails of their lobbiests to flex their muscles to intimidate law makers as they demand even weaker gun laws etc.

So yet again ...what are we going to do about these socio-economic issues, like 1. gross income disparity and income inequality, stagnated wages, decaying infrastructure, lack of opportunities and the decreased tax revenues intake that the govt needs? 2. the continued defunding, underfunding and downsizing of the Serve and Protect folks, 3. possible lack of serious investment in integrated information technology to facilitate timely and accurately track, trace and doccument gun sales, background checks etc, and make possible the ability to share current info among the various Serve and Protect depts/agencies from the state level through to the federal level etc? 4. the weak gun laws etc,? 5. our capitalistic greed and our weak will to address these problems?.

Ranted out....

Peace..... think for yourself....

Riiight.... And I have a bridge to sell you. What color would you like?

Just another example of how Obama is destroying America. And the worst part is that its being destroyed from the inside out; we have all the tools and power to change it but dumb*ss Americans seem to really like dumb*ss presidents who hate America.

It is my opinion also that the current admin could'nt give a care at all about America. Now that's just my opinion, but if the rest of America has missed the clue's, we have bigger problems than Obama. No Mas, No Obama 2012.

I am active duty military and an American born and raised in the midwest on a small farm and let me tell you something; I will do everything I can to help those who come to this country looking for a better way of life! All of the so-called do-gooders on this blog who are ranting about 'send these little b^%#^%'s back' had better take a long hard look in the mirror because your day is coming when you will have to answer for your selfishness (not to mention the peppering of racism that I am sure is at the heart you rants). Do any of you morons have any idea how many of these folks are serving in the military, fighting your wars (or at least the wars you backed until it became convenient for you to take the high road)? It is people like you who make me feel bad about this once-great country of ours. Most of these folks risking everything to come here will outwork any one of you who, back in the 90's when things were going a lot better, welcomed them here with open arms so they could do the jobs you felt were beneath you!!! You are nothing more than a bunch of self-righteous backward thinking hypocrites!!!!!!!!!

    #1.69 - Mon Jul 9, 2012 8:40 PM EDT

lundyp66...Thank you for your service. So do you have any idea of how many of these illegal children were part of human trafficking activity? Have you any idea of those children who maintain their status as students so they can peddle the poison provided by their cartel benefactors? How about the stats on children who wish to perpetuate illegal human trafficking...those who bring more crime and death to our country than will ever serve a legitimate purpose in our society? How about the true stats of student drop outs in the United States....Hispanic (no distinction between citizens and non-citizens) tops that list.

As for self-righteous....I have to admit that while living abroad we were "self-righteous" enough to abide by foreign immigration statutes, because of integrity and a healthy respect for the country we lived in. As for self-righteous, it offends me that our public schools are supporting a culture of people who will use our system of education until the age of 15 and drop out of that paid for benefit to participate in illegal activities because the culture they illegally import has no value for the public trust. Seriously if the foreign nationals that smuggle their children into the United States then they would attempt to teach their children to live by the laws of America.

Yes, they did take our jobs and will every chance they're given. There was a news story a few months back about a meat processing plant in the South that was raided my immigration and all 300+ illegal immigrants that were working there were deported. What the story didn't follow up on was that the newly hired employees were are American citizens who badly needed those jobs. There are no 'jobs Americans won't do'; just living wages American companies don't want to pay, health care they don't want to provide and benefits they don't care to foot the bill for either. After all, records profits only go so far (in the pockets of the 1%). As far as Obummer or Bush or any other of our illustious NON leaders goes they are playing both sides at the same time: they claim to be against illegal immigration to make Americans cheer but then allow it to please their corporate handlers. We need to bring ALL our armed forces back from hopeless @!$%#holes like Afghanistan (not UNcoincidentally called the 'Graveyard of Empires') and Iraq, stop all the imperialism and wars of choice that we don't have money for anymore, and LINE the Mexican border with a gaurd tower every quarter mile and orders to shoot anyone coming north. Stop giving their kids a free education with english lessons, free healthcare, free shelter (at the taxpayers expense). Make it illegal for them to buy or rent property without a legal Visa. If they get sick they get stabilized then sent home.

And what of the cheap votes the Democrats crave...? Maybe you would like to tell the class the party affiliation of the President of United States who just declared that he will not defend our laws; that he will reward all illegals under the age of thirty with amnesty if they can just get here before the next election.

This article is about the current state of affairs; this article is a direct result of the Democrats usurpation of American Sovereignty.

Your "who are you going to believe; me, or your damn lying eyes?" routine has played itself out.

All of the major western governments are doing the very same thing, allowing multitudes of poor legal and illegal immigrants into their countries despite the howls of protest by their own citizens. This has been a trend for a few years now, it's like the heads of the western govts all got together and worked out a plan and that plan is to speed up the goal of putting everyone (except them) on the same economic level. The Brits come off sounding just like us, complaining about why the govt doesn't do more. Their govt makes the same fake/false promises that our govt makes, such as how they will investigate the problem more thoroughly and on and on while doing nothing...and the immigrants just keep coming. What's so telling is that Britain is an island nation and yet they have rampant illegal immigration. How can that be unless the govt is somehow complicit? This is all on purpose, it's all coordinated, our govt is letting them flood into the US on purpose. They SAY they are deporting record numbers but our border agents, our border states and the local police say otherwise. The govt is lying to all of us. So what's the goal here? It's the same as it has always been, One World Govt.

      Romney...the job provider...to Illegal aliens.

From Politico.com dec 4 2007 ROMNEY HIRES ILLEGALS!

The morning after last week's debate "immigrants from Central America who say they are here illegally were in plain view on the lawn in front of Romney’s salmon-colored mansion in Belmont. Chatting in Spanish, they hustled to rake massive clumps of leaves, dump them in barrels, and clear debris from his tennis court.

Their boss, Ricardo Saenz of Chelsea, was the same man who for a decade brought illegal immigrants and others to work for Romney, whom he had met through their shared Mormon faith. A year ago, the Globe broke the news that illegal immigrants landscaped Romney’s 2.5-acre property.

In the past two months, the Globe observed Saenz and his crew at Romney's estate once a week, except during the week of Thanksgiving. The lawn work at Romney's usually took place around noon, then the crew drove a few houses down the street to the home owned by Taggart Romney, one of Mitt Romney's sons, where they worked for about an hour. The work was sandwiched in between other jobs elsewhere, on workdays that sometimes lasted 10 to 12 hours.

Last Thursday, the Globe interviewed two of the three workers who were at Romney's house. Both said they were illegal immigrants from Guatemala; one of the immigrants said the third worker was also here illegally. After the first snow, one of the workers said he went on to another job for another employer after Saenz said they would not return to Romney's house until next spring.

All those millions, and he can't hire Americans to work on the properties.....How cheap and unAmerican can one man be?

People astound me. First of all, we're talking about children. If you look around, you may see some in your own family or neighborhood - you know, little people who really aren't able to take care of themselves. Whether you want them to be here or not, don't be an ass and have a little compassion for the hell they just survived - and that, to be blunt, most pampered Americans couldn't handle.

Second I'd like to remind people that for the vast majority, YOUR family were once the immigrants. I'm not saying I support illegal immigration, but really few people here have any justifyable right to condemn others for wanting to get into the US so they can have a better life. You're family had the same desires or you wouldn't be here. Yes, there's a difference between doing it legally and illegally, and condemn that all you want, but stop bashing people simply because they want the better life your grandparents wanted. It makes you look small and manic on the topic.

Finally, I keep hearing over and over that we don't have the money to support these kids - and I'll be the first in line screaming that we are broke. But I ask you to take a good look at priorities here. Obama and Hillary just promised within the past 2 months to GIVE Afghanistan $4 BILLION per YEAR for 10 years after our troops leave in 2014. Since that's borrowed money add in interest and figure closer to $50 - $60 billion when all's said and done. Care to guess how much we give out to other nations in support on top of that? Now, no matter how much money we piss away over there, things are not going to improve in any significant manner, and they will not only still hate us, but use that in their war against us. Personally, I'd much rather spend that money giving these children a hand and work with their governments to see what could be done to improve conditions to where this problem was greatly reduced. We absolutely CAN afford it, we as a nation just choose not to.

children are children you cant expect them to take of themselves. As audults it is our responsibliity to care for them no matter whose children they are. when we can no longer care for children properly we have lost what our forefather fought for. When i see a child in distress color race or religion doest matter i have to care of them no matter what. It is the right thing to do and its what god would want. god bless the chidren how we treat them is how they will treat the next generation.

They not only take our jobs, but they take our retirement! People scream about Social Security not being an entitlement because we pay into it, but what about all the system suckers that never pay in but take the benefits? We have already constructed a fence across the entire borders of New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

I feel empathy for those children but not for their parents. This administration has made it known internationally that it will not prosecute, in any ,illegals who enter our country. Now with Obama's and Napolitano's mandate to ignore LEO's reports of interdiction this problem will only increase. The article mentioned parents already illegally here who send for the children. They do this knowing full well ICE will let them stay which means even more fraud documents when it comes time for the children to prove they arrived illegally between the ages of 5 and 16. People aren't stupid, no matter where they're from......with the exception of the POTUS, DOJ and DHS, that is.

Blame Bush all you want, this is Obama's watch. He installs the Dream Act via executive fiat and he hires a La Raza VP to head up his immigration program and now we have thousands of children crossing the border under horrid conditions, many who die along the way or are horribly abused and Obama does NOTHING.

Sorry, but granting amnesty is a slap in the face for those who follow the rules and pandering to Latinos for votes ignores the fact that 2/3 of Latinos are Americans and they also suffer from his wrong-headed policies.

Now what, Mr. Presidente? Set up massive orphanages along the border?

My heart goes out to those children, they suffer because of wrong-headed governments on both sides of the Border. Perhaps it is time to get real about the crisis south of the border, perhaps it is time for the US to get real with Mexico. Note that Mexico has a fence along its southern border to keep Central Americans out and note as well how they treat illegals, not real nice. Until the conditions in Mexico and Latin America improve this exodus will continue. Reminds me of Somalia and other refugees coming from African countries. There is a point, a tipping point, where the refugee country finds itself overrun and unable to care for its own citizens. Look at Italy and the Libyan refugees.

Nerm: Quit with the leftwing talking points and get educated about Fast and Furious, it is ALL OF IT Obama and Holder. Hard to admit that fact but, Obama and Holder (Obama gives Holder his marching orders) are responsible for creating, funding and allowing guns into the hands of criminals.

It's a shame we can't send them, (our people in prison that are all most likely there because they refuse to work a real job and contribute to a use full society). @NoMoreCuriousGeorge -- Today's 'press bias' has been leaning towards faith based reporting that accepts conservative fiction as fact. Money talks - factual reporting walks.

Part of the reason that more Central Americans want to enter the US is because they have more first hand knowledge of 'rich' Americans. The United States has become so inhospitable that our own citizens are moving out of the country for retirement.

      http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2011/08/04/costa-rica-new-florida-for-retirees/

I realize that this is a casual forum, but as a teacher it is troublesome to see so many respondents who cannot use English correctly and/or spell correctly. Don't people care about their writing? After all, what you put on the web is there for anyone to read and will last for years and years. At the very least, I would think people don't want to appear as illiterate morons who can't even spell "butts" correctly.

I work at a school where several of my students were born in Mexico and, as far as I know, are in the U.S. illegally. Why don't the schools care? Well, probably the major reason schools aren't interested in identifying students in the U.S. illegally is because in California, at least, schools receive money from the state for every student--legal or illegal--so there is no incentive for schools to identify illegal immigrants. In fact, there is every reason to keep those here illegally in school because the schools receive money when they are in school. I think one of the things that disturbs me most about the arguments in favor of granting special privileges to those who have entered the U.S. illegally is that we have several teachers who have entered the U.S. legally, who have been teaching here for over five years, and who have STILL not received their "green" cards because the review process is so time-consuming; the U.S. government is so thorough in its background investigation of each individual and there is such a backlog of applicants. Why should those who have entered the country legally be subject to such scrutiny, but those who enter illegally be given a virtual "free pass" simply because they have lived in the U.S. illegally for several years? In addition, why don't the governments of Mexico and Central American countries prosecute the parents who send their children on this hazardous journey with child endangerment or desertion? One of the things I notice with many of my students--and I don't know if it's a cultural or generational thing--is that many of my students have never experienced a consequence for any action that is inappropriate or against the rules.

@hillbilly-genius -- Fast and Furious did not 'send them' guns. The firearms were legally purchased over the counter from gun dealers in AZ and legally resold - according to AZ law. Since gun laws are virtually non-existent, Fast and Furious could not intercept the firearms before a crime was committed with them.

      http://features.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2012/06/27/fast-and-furious-truth/

Apparently the NRA is concerned that the investigation of Fast and Furious could limit the sale of guns. That is why the NRA was 'scoring' the contempt vote against law enforcement.

Our government has build a situation that allows illegals to work in our country instead of placing harsh penalties on companies hiring illegals and deporting all illegals. You know if they can't find a job they open up a business; construction, restaurants, almost anything they want to do because our government allow them to get a tax id number to file their tax returns and with that number there is no stopping them. Believe me stop them from making a living here and they will go back as Romney says self deportation but there is nothing stopping them from prospering at the expense of Americans.

We need to open the border. Let anyone who wants in come here. Stop wasting this money patrolling the border. Amnesty for all! And a check for $1000 to get started! They can work the jobs that Americans dont want. $2000 for each if they are a gay couple, just because we ALL love them.

We can afford this by legalizing pot and taxing it.

@hillbilly-genius -- ATF CANNOT interfere with the legal purchase of firearms. The gun that killed the Border Agent was legally purchased. The firearm was purchased over the counter in AZ - legally - according to the laws of AZ. In the United States a legally purchased firearm only becomes 'illegal' after it has been used in a crime.

      That is the point.

@hillbilly-genius -- Faith based 'truth' fails when confronted with cold, hard facts.

The genie is out of the bottle - no way to spin it. The uptight Right has been highlighting that Fast and Furious did not intercept legally purchased firearms that were later used for criminal activity. The uptight Right has been promoting that investigation - and revealing the need for tighter gun control - by pointing out that a Border Agent was killed with one of the guns.

The uptight Right has been saying that - guns kill - without even realizing that is their message.

The NRA 'scored' the contempt vote obviously to deflect attention to law enforcement - and - away from the message of the uptight Right that guns kill.

Even you are suggesting that ATF failed to intercept these guns - that were legally purchased over the counter from gun dealers in AZ. Even you are attempting to point out that gun controls are necessary and should be enforced.

Judging from the priorities and level of compassion shown here for refugee children trying to escape cartel violence, I'm just waiting for someone to propose that we sell these kids to the cartels for profit to pay down the debt.

I'm also enjoying the little side argument about fast and furious, in which the right wing assumption is that the cartel wouldn't have any guns if they didn't come from the US government. What I expected to hear from the right, in order to be consistent, is that the cartel killed Terry, because 'guns don't kill people, people kill people'.

Instead, we are hearing that the ATF killed Terry, because it allowed the guns to be sold to the cartel in the first place. That's very enlightened of you all, even if your new-found liberalism is an unintentional consequence of wanting desperately to attack Obama on something, anything. Because if the ATF - or better yet, Obama or Holder - killed Terry, then you are arguing that the proliferation of guns kill people, and further that the gun dealer is culpable in the death of anyone killed by that gun.

      Welcome to our side.

@Snakebone -- The United States has spent enormous amounts of money on interdiction - on 'sending them back' - and yet they still cross our borders by thousands. Closing our borders is a failed policy. All we have accomplished is to increase the human cost.

The only solution is to open our borders. But our borders MUST open both ways. We already have a framework to do that with the NAFTA treaty.

What amazes me is that the people that promote 'free and open markets' fail to use that philosophy to solve problems. Apparently the rhetoric is simply a flim-flam for profiteers - no matter who gets hurt.

A bunch of hard ass people beating their chests and acting all macho and proud because they demand to send children "back where they came from" after having the ordeal of their lives... how's it feel to have the heart of a little chicken sh!t? Your momma would be proud.

Many are God-fearing hard working simple people that have ethics way beyond many of us... they certainly have the will and the fortitude to better their lives given all they go through. Most come here NOT to cause harm or break the law, but to work for pennies on the dollar in places most of us would never consider for so many hours that they have no other life.

Yes, it's a problem. And because we're not barbarians it DOES cost us some money and resources to care for some. We need to straighten this out... absolutely...

But why all the hate? Have we lost our humanity? (don't answer that... I don't want to know).

@Nerm - Hey, we both used the same argument re the right-wing flip on the responsibility of the gun dealer in the use of the gun. Notice that nobody had anything to say.

pjam wrote that American policy is causing a 'tidal wave of illegals'. I am old enough to have heard that same complaint consistently for the past 40 years, through the policies of left and right. We've tried making their lives harder here in the states, we've tried building a wall, we've tried beefing up the border patrol, we've tried going after employers, we've tried deportation strategies, we've even allowed armed racists to sit in their pickup trucks on the border looking for poaching opportunities. Through it all we've seen the 'tidal wave' continue. I guess I'm getting tired of hearing it. Punitive measures are just not gonna work.

I've spent a lot of time in Mexico, and I have to say the the big complaint over there is that once someone makes it to the US, they are trapped here. For them, it's an either/or situation. A German or a Swede who comes here can stay a while, pick up some work while they're here, then go home. A Mexican lives in hiding from the second they touch the soil, and it's just as dangerous to leave as to come.

I think what Americans don't get is that Mexicans love their homeland as much as anybody. Americans might be surprised to discover that, if we had an open border, there would be as much a tidal wave of Mexicans going home as coming here. I'm guessing that we would see movement into the country in summer, and movement out in the fall - which is what we have now, except for the part where they get to leave. Our farmers get their cheap labor, we have fewer full-time immigrants, and we don't spend huge sums trying to stop the sun from shining.

And children don't face the border scared and alone, trying to reunite with their families.

We helped a family from Guatemala by giving them shelter for 2+ months. Both the husband and wife found employment at a turkey processing plant and we visit each other often and I will continue to help those in need. We are Americans based on the random place on the globe we were born--big deal.

@snake bone -----i,ll bite on your bait - administrations come and go- responsibility of gun dealers --

Licensees must maintain records of all firearms receipts and dispositions, including the name, age, and place of residence of purchasers. 18 USC 922(b)(5) and 923(g)(1)(A). Licensed importers and manufacturers are required to identify firearms they import or manufacture by means of a serial number, which must be recorded in licensee records. 18 USC 923(i). Licensees are required to respond immediately to ATF firearms trace requests. 18 USC 923(g)(6). Reports of multiple sales of two or more handguns sold at one time or during any five consecutive business days are also required to be submitted to ATF. 18 USC 923(g)(3). Licensees who discontinue business must deliver their records to ATF. 18 USC 923(g)(4). These requirements enable ATF to carry out one of the principal purposes of the GCA—to assist State, local, and foreign law enforcement officials in tracing firearms used in crime. The United States government does not maintain records of licensees’ firearms transactions, other than the previously mentioned out-of-business records, reports of multiple handgun sales, and records of firearms traces. The assimilation of the information from these records provides valuable leads in the identification of illegal gun traffickers and their sources of firearms in the United States. Regulations at 22 CFR 122.5 require that records of all transactions authorized by export, temporary import, and temporary export licenses must be maintained by the applicant for a period of 5 years. The records must be made available to United States Customs officers upon demand. These transactions are also computerized at the Department of State and Customs ports. ---- notice the word Democrat and Republicans are not mentioned these are the only responsibilities of a gun dealer

I say as we roust up the illegals we house them along the boarder for 3 months before we deport them. We should feed them and keep them clothed (in orange uniforms ) and while they are waiting to be sent back to Mexico thye work building a wall to keep them all out. As many as there are it shouldn't take more than 5 to 10 years to have a very tall and strong wall along the boarder and slow down the invasion substantially. No need to pay them because they have been pre paid by recieving services they were not entitled too as aliens. we recover some of our costs and get the boarder secured at a resonable cost.

I feel for the children and wonder what kind of parents would subject them to a lonely, frightening, dangerous trip surrounded by strangers... and worse. However, the numbers of these children coming across alone will only increase if we simply accept them. They, and all illegals who are caught, must be sent back to their own countries.

I know our immigration system is slow and needs to be improved upon. Let's get off our butts and push for our "leaders" to do just that. And let's make sure that everyone who wants to live in this country permanently does so the right way, legally.

Right now our states are strapped for cash, finding it harder and harder to provide the necessary services for their citizens. Social service programs are stretched thin and seeing budget cuts from their home states and the federal government. We have many many legal immigrants and U.S. born citizens who are in need as prices rise and jobs are scarce. We can no longer afford to open our arms to all. Nor should we.

We all need to reaffirm our Americanism. All who live here need to embrace America and its culture. We all need to put away our Italian flags and Irish flags and Cuban flags and fly the flag of our country-- America. We need to make English the official language of the United States and ensure that all immigrants are given instruction in English so that they can be proficient in the language and productive in their new home. The reason why the melting pot of old was so successful was because of immigrants' desire to embrace their new country and assimilate. Nowadays it seems that immigrants want to enjoy the benefits of America while holding tightly to ways of the country they ran from. They can't have it both ways.

As for our "forefathers," they assisted in land grabs, killing off of an entire race while enslaving another. Many didn't speak English for generations. Still, the Huterites speak low German and high German while inbreeding.

I don't really think they are "stealing" skilled jobs, your skilled jobs are being contracted to H1B workers, and radiologists in India (they're reading x rays via digital images). Semi skilled work like call centers and factory work are going to India and China as well as Mexico. I really believe that our standard of living will decrease as the global standard increases because industry IS global now.

Immigration has ALWAYS been from the downtrodden to the better living conditions. War, famine, unemployment and political unrest has brought Italians, Germans, Chinese and Irish ethnicities just to name a few.... and of course the British and Dutch were uninvited squatters from the 1600s. It's called human migration, and we've been doing it forever. Even the American Indians migrated from Asia without an invitation.

If you really want to be bugged by tax abuse, I can tell you about people I have known to procreate just to get welfare assistance; and they're proud of it! Ex con with no money for formula, only tats. Yet we have to diss people willing to sacrifice their lives for a better future instead of figuring out a solution.

One thing they didn't mention is many of these kids are themselves gang members and are flowing across the border to assassinate enemies of the gangs. In one case a twelve year old killed a man in New Mexico. The kid put two bullets into the man but only made one hole. That is some incredibly accurate shooting but these kids get some of the best training on the planet.
We need to close our borders to all of these kids.

I agree, we should start by getting rid of the pillaging thieving English illegal's decendents who came and stole the true Americans blind beginning in the 1700's. Then we can get rid of the Italians and the Germans and all the rest of the European illegals who certainly did not have legal permission from the Americans to come here. If it is too difficult we can at least take all their children and deport them. That will eventually solve the illegal problem quite nicely.

Richard--THAT old canard of an argument? The so called "native Americans came here and stole the land themselves. And killed each other for territory, AND took slaves. Most didn't even recognize ownership of the land, and the tribes that existed primarily on hunting followed GAME where ever it lead.

So sorry if they were conquered, but they were. Meanwhile, for nearly 400 years, the "English" (and French, and Dutch, and YEP, the SPANIARDS were recognized as the inhabitants of this land. For nearly 250 years, the UNITED States has been a world wide recognized legal entitiy. Our BORDERS have been essentially unchanged sea to sea for over 140 years...THAT IS SEVEN generations.

Meanwhile, everyone seems to think any citizen from points south of here 'deserve' to come back across our border based on WHAT? We DEFEATED the Mexican Army. We PAID them CASH for the land. And guess what, the only people south of our border who even have a 'claim' would be the ones who DO NOT speak Spanish. Because if you speak Spanish, you too are the descendant of "European ancestorsl." And need to stay in the country you are a citizen of, and use all that energy to make YOUR country successful. And Richard--the immigrants who came here from Europe DID have permission to come here. We NEEDED more people for many years. But after WWII, we decided we were fully UP, and imposed a limit on the # of immigrants we would allow every year, and WHO they were.

          And that is our RIGHT.

And BTW, Mexico's immigration laws are TOUGHER than ours.

To The People of Texas and

All Americans In The World --

          February 24, 1836

          Fellow citizens & compatriots --

I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna -- I have
sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not
lost a man -- The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the
garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken -- I have answered
the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the
          walls --

I shall never surrender or retreat.

Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism, & every thing
dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch -- The
enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three
or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am
determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who
never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country --

In fact they did not even know how to write. It is easy to remember your history if you don't know how to write. They need to face it they lost the war now they need to get over it. George pauljohn, I think all of our grandchildren will live in a very diiferent America than we have -- and it won't be a better place! You cannot absorb millions of poorly educated illegal immigrants, bear the societal costs they cause now and in the future, and expect to survive as a Nation as the local, state and federal tax burdens all increase to help address this crisis. The USA's strong suit has been the enormous size of the middle class, which has begun to shrink and will likely continue to do so as more families lose their "middle class" economic status. We're on the way to a very ugly future unless we change course. Helping others requires that we take care of ourselves first. Only then will we, as a country, be in an economic position enabling us to help others.

Wow, Richard, do you believe Gerrard1234--"We kicked the indians a$$es for them and took it, if they want it back, they can get it the same way we got it, till then they can follow the law." !!!!! Apparently he thinks that genocide is 'legal', breaking every treaty we ever made was legal--but when a poor person comes here out of desperation--THEN he applies the 'legal' clause. People this stupid and devoid of any real understanding or knowledge of history OR critical thinking are hopeless.

I'm going to say this and many might not like it but every time I hear someone whining and complaining about the English taking America from the native Americans all I have to say they should feel lucky it was the Europeans and not other countries around the world. Who knows what would have happened then? What if it was the Ottomans who settled in the America's? Where would the natives be now? Not to mention anyone bashing on the natives should sit back and think...Wow if it wasn't for them the early settlers would have perished!

It was with the natives assistance that they were able to gain a foothold in what is now the U.S. and I fully agree they were given a bum deal in the end. But nobody alive right now had anything to do with that! And concerning these kids comming up from the desert it is not an easy decision no matter which way we go. And this is "current events" and it is a problem which in the end not everybody will be satisfied. Personally I would have a hell of a time "not" helping a bunch of starving children wandering in from the desert. I would have to help them as they are children! But the longterm problem's are a different story. Where would we put them? How would we feed them? Do we send them back? And I do not have an answer for those questions.

This does not seem to be an issue that any president has wanted to remedy. These children are innocent; however, what you post is absolutely true. The monies spent on people here illegally are unbelievable. In the state of Arkansas, which is an immigrant friendly state, people here illegally can get food stamps; Medicaid; housing assistance; etc. There is a "Psedo-social security number" that is issued. Think that outrageous? There are some real wastes of money. Case in point: Sending a speech-pathologist into the home for therapy (Early Intervention) at the rate of more than $72.00 an hour for "Speech" while the family sit and speak nothing but Spanish. Governer Beebe, you need to be replaced by a more fiscally sound governor; and not Dustin McDaniel.

The children - are innocent - but they cost this country billions in social services, and I know this first hand. The therapist in the story above is me; so don't "Assume" (as to whether I work and pay taxes) about folks; you know what they say about that. As to the illegals in this country: Am; Have been; and will continue to speak against this cheapening of citizenship and pandering for votes by politicians, especially in this administration:

There's nothing but illegals everywhere, even in some of the nicest neighborhoods I use to visit out there, now they are looking not so nice, and everywhere there are spanish signs, and stores, crazy, but no one in NY BK/QUS/L.I. seem to want to do anything about it.

INNOCENT my grandma's fanny! sure if they are under 10 they MIGHT be innocent. If they are male and over 15, as unfortunate as it is, most are already criminals!!!! I read an article yesterday in AZ, in 'The Republic' newspaper, that the new pres of Mexico will prosecute any legal or illegal immigrant, no matter what country they are originally from. You come through the gates or you go to jail. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm what a concept!!! Obey the rule of the land or go to jail. What the heck are Visa for if not to be able to keep track of who comes and goes? America is the ONLY country in the world who ignores the comings and goings of those who cross her borders. The world wants our freedom, The world wants our food, the world wants our financial support. We can not turn our back on the world. What we can do is to make sure that if someone comes here then the first thing they do is to enlist in our military, stop flying the flags of their home country, and start flying the flag of the U.S. It is a federal law that NO flag shall fly above or instead of the Flag of the United States. Why can't we insist that just that one law be enforced? If those who come here are so damned pleased to be here then they should at least show it!

Well for one thing Johnny N. its easier said than done 'coming through the front door' here in the U.S. You apparently don't know how the Mexican Government works. They don't just give you visas or what not to travel to America. It could take years for someone to get their visas, or the gov't simply just denies them... Just ask my grandma... She's been trying to come up here 'legally' for years...

Again, just why are young people marching around in the hot Mexican and Arizona desert, risking their lives with hunger, dehydration, incarceration, thugs and God knows what else? There must be a reason, a cause, and don't blame it on Obama's selective enforcement gambit introduced just last month, this behavior has been going for years and has only now become bad enough to gain national attention. Gee, what else could be making kids run north, how about a huge drug war in Mexico making them into refugees? What's the cause of that? How about an insatiable appetite for this junk in the US? Oh, I also love the NRA sanctioned Arizona Gun Laws that allow young adults without criminal records to legally buy and resell as many weapons as they can carry thus fueling this chaos.

What did Romney do with his illegals?

            ROMNEY CAUGHT with HIRING ILLEGALS!

When Romney was caught hiring Illegal aliens to work on his landscaping, did he just fire them or did he call ICE and have them deported?....We all know the answer to that one don't we! He did nothing! He kept hiring the same firm and did it all over again.......Good ol turn em loose Romney. Repubs say illegals are criminals, so Romney is a criminal for hiring them. Christ he is a multimillionaire and he couldn't hire Americans to do the jobs. Had to get a few more pennies from American workers......GREED GREED GREED at your expense. Roofing, landscaping, construction, storm cleanup/repair, painting, all used to be good paying jobs for college men and women, the jobs were filled. Rich employers want the illegals so they can charge the same prices and make a bigger profit. Fines and jail time should be the order of business for those who knowingly hire illegals. Romney would have served time for knowingly hiring illegals.

Yes, MFOregon, it is difficult to 'come through the front door'. That is INTENTIONAL.

Your comment about the Mexican government is a measure of your ignorance. The government of Mexico doesn't issue visas to visit the US. It's the prerogative of the destination country whether or not to issue a visa to an applicant.

The TRUTH is that the immigration system was NEVER intended to be a welfare program for poor, uneducated foreigners. It was intended to encourage the LEGAL immigration of people that would be CONTRIBUTORS to our society and our economy.

As for the children, just put them in buses and ship them back over the border. Mexico brags about having free health care. Stop ALL of the illegal immigration immediately. Hell, I am a born and bred U.S. citizen and I end up getting strip searched at my local airport. I am treated worse than illegals and I am just a quiet normal person. If the charities want to help, let them help across the borders. If Mexico is having problems with cartels, let them ask Queen Mr. President Obama for military help. Then let our seal teams have a crack at the cartels or send drones after them.

This nation is becoming trash with no national or common language to help bind us together. Folks immigrating over to the U.S. of A. used to have to learn ENGLISH as part of becoming a citizen. The United States of America used to be the gold standard. With politicians catering to all of the lobbyists and organizations that pander to illegals, we are losing the value of our country. Congress keep voting themselves raises and guaranteed pensions. oops, that sounds like union heads. Has our legislative body actually changed into a union type buddy system? Our Queen Mr. President Obama just totally ignores the Constitution of the United States that made us so great.

We really need to deport illegals, no matter their age. Those that are able to legally obtain Visas or green cards should get off their lazy behinds and do so quickly, along with learning English, or be deported. The borders do need to be better patrolled. Kids should be sent back just as adults. Let Mexico ask for assistance if they need it. I am quite sure our government would assist. Quit blaming everything on the drug trade. Anyone caught using illegal drugs should be arrested. First timers should be helped with treatment and a severe warning that it will affect the rest of their life if it happens again, maybe adding a bit of jail time.

I had hope for Mr. President Obama, but his excessive taxation rules under Obamacare and executive rules that affect individual liberties and foreign policy have really upset me. I do hope he is voted out of office now and we get a president with common sense. This is all my opinion.

mforegon, appears to think that only the poor people of Mexico have to wait to get US visa's I have news for you, it can take 5, to 15 years to come here the correct way no matter what country you are from. I relation needs to be able to prove that they are coming here to only visit. Usually that is demonstrated by ownership of a successful business and home in their native country. Otherwise you intend to apply for an Immigrant Visa and for that one needs to be able to demonstrate to USCIS that they will not become a parasite on the American people. They need to demonstrate that they have skills that will allow them to provide an income above the poverty level for their families. Nearly all Latino's are parasites in Alabama. They may work hard under someone names, however through their Anchor Babies they are nearly all on some form of welfare, food stamps, wic, medicaid. Many earn several thousand dollars a month. Yet, they are in line and still living off the American people, and laugh at us as they stand in line weekly to wire their money home. Any child coming here without a guardian should be treated as a victim of child abuse and neglect and the parents should under no circumstance be given the child back. Unless they self deport, these parents placing children under these risks are not parents.

Halfblood princess, not all of the illegals coming here are from Central or South America. There are plenty of illegal Chinese and Korean immigrants (as well as some from other countries) here, too. There have been a number of raids in NYC at sweatshops and "massage parlors" where they have found numerous illegal Asians. It is just that this article is about young illegals coming into this country.

They are trying to escape being forced into the drug and gang cartels. These people seek out young people, mostly teenage boys, to train them in their ways to continue on the business. That's why lots of people who do know what is going on south of the border leave their teenage sons at home in the States so they don't have to worry that their child is going to be snatched by these evil people. They stop the tour buses to steal age-appropriate people, even private vehicles! The girls that are taken, what do you think they are used for? They are sold and forced to do what they don't want to. Is that what you would want for your child? To be torn away from your family? Do heinous crimes? Some of you say to send them back to their country. Well, then maybe the same should have been done to your ancestors when they set foot here in the United States of America, where it is completely made up of immigrants.

The violence that is driving these children northward is the result, in a large part, of the American demand for illegal drugs. Until we develop a rational solution to the drug epidemic in this country, Mexico and Central America will continue to suffer. US law enforcement barely has the resources to fight drug criminals. Smaller and poorer countries haven't a chance.

Shoot a couple of hundred of them on the border and the rest will get the message, and then have the states take a play out of Obamas playbook and just refuse to investigate.

They come into America and expect Americans to feed, clothe and give them free medical care and then they start gangs to extort money from the legal immigrants. They refuse to learn english and set up a seperate south american and mexican country's inside America. All immigrants have done this illigal or not asian mexicans, cubans all come here and start their own little country and refuse to assimilate into American society, send them all back to where they come from. Do not hide behind the fact that we are all immigrants because that doe's not work, while the truth, it is of no consequence now. They burn our flag and want the country's flag where they come from flying at American schools. They do not celebrate the holidays that we do for the liberation of America, but they celebrate their own country's holidays. I say send them all back, do not allow any illigals to stay here period. I feel sorry for the children but they should go home obtain arms and weapons and fight against those who take their freedoms, that is what the immigrants here in America did. Many women and children died and suffered in the fight for human rights and freedoms in America, go back to your country and start a revolution to change your country. Are you all cowards, we do not want cowards in America, look what is happening in Syria, these prople had enough and now fight and die to obtain their rights. Send them back to where they came from, feed them, give them a bath, put cloths on them if needed, treat their cuts and brusies and then send them back.

We can be kind and make it so people can come into the country legally pay taxes pay insurance and if they do not want to do that then we should make them leave, and as for these parents sending their kids here alone the children don't ask to be born but we can not allow one or a million in if they think we will allow it then they will TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT. if you can not afford a child DO NOT HAVE ONE. that is just common sense.

all of this debate really points to the idea that we need to completely rethink immigration. we have to realize that there is no ONE solution, because everything is intertwined. the countries that these children come from don't give a rat's behind what happens to these children. to send them back without a second thought is a death sentence to them, and as a "christian" nation as all you right wing radicals want to demand that we should have, would be the most unchristian thing to do. the poverty and violence in mexico and south america is endemic of why we are seeing such an influx of children. and yes, most of the problem does start with the usage of drugs here. if there was no market, these cartels would have to find somewhere else to sell their goods. But! if it weren't for the cartels sending the drugs, we would probably get a better handle on american addiction. so you can see, this can't be fixed with some simple do this or do that.

i agree that we should stop giving money to countries like afghanistan and pakistan and where ever when they have shown no interest in being real allies. i agree we should get OUT of those conflicts and leave them to their fates. what a waste of our time, money and loss of good american lives for people who hate us.

i think it is important for everyone here to understand something that the right especially doesn't want to face. we have had illegal immigrants in this country practically since we set borders. they have been working here for decades and decades and decades not just the last few years. there may be more now, but it isn't something NEW. and for decades and decades and decades they have been doing all the dirty grunt work we good ol' americans don't want to do, even when employment was up up up and we were all living the american dream during the 50s and 60s and 70s and 80s, there were the illegals cleaning up after us. so, don't accuse them of stealing our jobs. that's what they used to say about the blacks from the moment they were freed and even today there are people who resent them for actually getting an education and making something of themselves, i.e. anti equal opportunity.

we need to start serious dialogues with the countries where these children are coming from, starting with Mexico. until we confront the reasons that people are flooding into our country it will never stop. we have had fences and guns and patrol for years now, and the problem is just as bad as it ever was. we need to demand that these countries own up to taking care of their own people. we can do this using economic sanctions and assistance depending upon what is appropriate. but! let's remember, countries like columbia and venezuela hate us! they are probably making a killing on the drugs that flow out of their countries and don't WANT anything to change. and they treat their own people like animals so they don't care what we do with those children. they won't take them back!

i agree that we might have to change to something much more drastic like, yes opening the borders like we have with canada. if the borders were open i think we would first of all end the horrendous and sickening ordeals that these children have had to go through. we would stop the trafficking of people into this country that are used for prostitution(women and girls).

i think raising the minimum wage to something that people could actually live on and not a slave wage would also help. how? well, i'll tell you. more americans might be willing to do those grunt jobs if they could actually live on them and if you're an employee who has a choice of hiring a legal american and paying them a living wage and NOT going to jail or hiring an illegal and paying them the same amount and RISK going to jail, which would you do? you could take a chance of paying illegals slave wages and hope you don't get caught and there might be those who would take that chance, but i think most employers wouldn't. so, maybe where we should start with a minimum wage increase that makes hiring illegals no longer cost effective.

we CANNOT just turn our backs on these children or we will lose the most important thing we have as Americans, our souls. i am a christian and i believe what Jesus taught us, "love thy neighbor as thyself." there is no exclusion for ethinticity or country of origin or legality. don't call yourself a christian and then in the next sentence say 'send them back no matter what!" that makes you the worst kind of hypocrit. and ! i would like to see anyone of you who would condone shooting people at the border as they come across to actually DO it! that's what the Nazis did in Berlin for 30 years and you would lower us to that level of depravity? what a bunch of souless b**tards you are!

Don't be fooled by the fools who claim people do it for the money and roll up your sleeves. There are dyed in the wool American Children in every city suffering from every form of child abuse and neglect. Course in some cases they will look like they could be your own children so everyone won't automaticly know they aren't really yours. Drugs are a problem here just like in SA no reason to send out, you want to save the children START HERE.

This obviously is not going to ever stop. These people are living in squalor and fear, and they see the United States as 'Heaven.' The only answer that I can see would be for the US to annex Mexico, make it a state. It makes sense, we can send in the army and clean up the damned drug gangs, and tax everyone down there to repay the costs of the illegals...past, present, and future. If we were taking care of them in their homeland, maybe they wouldn't all flock over here. More jobs rebuilding the slums, and turn the whole place into a vacation paradise, and we will not need a visa or passport. Win-win!

mimiflamingo--FIRST we need to build a fence. Not a weak azz fence, but a strong one like the Israelis built around Jerusalem. We need to arm it with every electronic gizmo that exists, and we need to man it with people who know how to use that stuff, WHICH would be our returning Military. (Win, win, win--Jobs in construction to help the economy, jobs for the Vets coming back home, secure border.

Mexico should be happy, because if we have an enforced border, it would be mUCH harder not only to smuggle stuff like drugs, terrorists, and illegals NORTH, but also harder to smuggle GUNS south.

Of course, they may not be quite so happy about us stopping the southward flowing bales of drug money.

I have had that idea for a long time, just take over Mexico, clean it up, and use it as a tourist destination. They have a bunch of oil and other reserves that can be used to pay for it. Unfortunately, the current administration is laying off all our soldiers when they come back from the wars. I don't even know how big our army is right now if they are all being fired when they come back from over-seas! It would take quite a few to take out the cartels that our govt just gave more than 3000 ak-47s to. It does make sense though, especially now that the most corrupt govt in mex history just got re-elected. They have been sending their people over for years to work and the money they send back is taxed at about 40% when it goes back over the border. Meanwhile, we pay for their children and what cash they get from jobs (illegally I might add), they buy new cars, jewelry, ect. I see these people walking around with wads of 100 bills all the time and I know they have not paid any taxes except sales taxes. Makes me sick!

All of our JOBS are not being taken by those who cross our borders. Most of are jobs are being sent OVERSEAS because our countries UNIONS want too much pay and benfits. I have seen one company fire half of their work force , with the unions help, then raise the unions workers pay from $7 in 1970 to $25 plus better health care this year. It works this way, if one union gets a raise then another gets the same or more, then the next and so on. They want tom live high on the hog and care very little of those who get nfired or laid off. Just so long as they get theirs. If the unions cut their wages they can help make jobs for more people. If you think I am wrong then look at the auto industry. The US MADE CARS ARE NOT MADE IN THIS COUNTRY ALONE. Parts are made in Canada, Mexico and Japan Yet they say American Made. Funny thing is that they pay less wages in the other countries yet the costs keep going higher. Looks as though Profits are more important.

Tiler........B.S. Companies get tax subsidies to take jobs out of the United States. As soon as NAFTA was signed, Jostens the ring company opened up ring plant in Mexico overnight back in late 90's. Plants closed in U.S. so they could pay children and adults pennies on the dollar. It failed luckily. It is the tax breaks and the greed to make more money. Dems had bills to remove tax breaks on the companies taking jobs overseas...repubs just blocked it. Dems had bill that would give tax breaks to companies to then bring jobs back...repubs just blocked it. Romney now caught with Swiss bank accounts and Cayman Island bank accounts hiding profits so he does not have to pay taxes......

Rove plan to get middle class against each other while the rich ask and get more tax breaks while YOU pay the higher taxes rich should be paying.......Divide and conquer the feeble minded , pitting themselves against Unions while they walk off with the do re mi...!

Illegals come here to be cleaned up and showered, fed and clothed. What's wrong with this picture? This is the BASIC HUMAN RIGHT that their own Country should be doing for their OWN PEOPLE. The answer is simple--Send them ALL back, and let their own Government figure out how they will deal with the human exodus they are aiding and abetting. Sanctions you say? We should assuage our supposed "guilt" for sending them back by offering sanctions and money to these countries? This action will only serve to make these countries even MORE CO-DEPENDENT than what they are already doing by sending their people here to exploit our country's resources--There's a huge IMBALANCE in this idea! I say, Send Obama to speak to their President and suggest ways in which their country can transform their cruelty into supporting their own people to become a HEALTHY RESOURCE. To empower their own people to become A BENEFIT, by providing free education, health care, housing, medical assistance, food, etc. These are sanctions that the extreme caste system of most of these Latin American countries can begin to transform. Let the U.S. become an EXAMPLE of freedom for their own country to emulate. This, indeed, is a commitment to self-sufficiency not co-dependence!

These kids, and this article, are just another way that the pro illegal immigrant folks try to make a move on you. These kids are sent/brought here by someone in their family. The very action they take tells you they care nothing for the children. Why....WHY do we suddenly become the caretakers and benefactors? Anchor kids? Drug kids? Who knows....and WHO CARES! We had no hand in them illegally coming here - their families did. Illegal aliens from Mexico, and their control, constitutes a war. They come here to take anything and everything they can from you. I could care less that they want a better life. Lord knows many, many of us are trying to get a better life and these folks steal it from us. Plus, they steal our financial resources; more than any single thing in our economy. And we still turn a blind eye. We refuse to hunt them down and kick them out or.....terminate them. They are a plague of locusts that has to be stopped. You can't believe the government, particularly this administration; in real life facts these folks drain 3 (THREE) times the money from this economy as they contribute. The kids are sad-but so are the thousands upon thousands that die in wars around the world. We cannot, and should not, try to save every misbegotten kid in the world - we have our own. Put them on a bus, take them to the border, give them a daypack and a bottle of water and force them to march. Put Mexico on notice. Take videos and watch the grim end. Maybe, MAYBE Mexicans would start to try to take care of their own - but, I doubt it. The article says they are coming primarily from Central America, which I doubt, but if they are, the same tactics should be employed. We can't keep trying to take care of these people while our own die for them.

Gotta love MSNBC's willingness to ignore reality in order to put it's mindless liberal propaganda spin on everything:

Headline: "Kids cross border alone, fleeing drugs and gangs"

Reality: "Children are typically not the ones making the decision to come to the United States. Either someone is forcing them to leave their country or somebody is sending them," said Young. "

                          P.S.

"Why this is happening we're still trying to figure out. ... said Wendy Young, the executive director of Kids In Need of Defense"

Wow, really? She can't figure out that a U.S. president refusing to enforce America's borders (and suing Americans who try to) is causing a tidal wave of illegals?

What purpose would there be to smuggling children without parents into the country?, except to use them as slave labor, drug mules or much, much worse. Such loving caring people these illegal human traffickers. Seal the border, Mr. Obama and congress, NOW! Get the cartels out of the national parks in the border zone. They heard about the new plan to allow children that came here without papers to get their citizenship. This is the new way of getting here and getting support because you are child.

You are absolutely correct. Once the child makes it here and is adopted into our system, then they can legally bring over their family members through our chain migration policy. It isn't just bringing over mom and dad either it is "immediate family members" Look up the numbers of people living legally within the US from chain migration, add to that the number of Anchor babies and there is the reason right there for the first time in US history hispanics/latino children outnumber the rest. I am so sick of people living up north acting like this isn't a big issue and that us southern states are over inflating the problem. I have been on the receiving end of identity fraud by 16 different illegal Mexican Nationals. They started out using my social security number for employment, but within weeks they were using it to apply for credit cards, cell phone contracts, rental agreement etc.. It took me four years to clean up the mess that they created and almost lost me the purchase of my first home. I was a single mother at the time raising two children on my own and was not elligible for benefits from the country that I paid into these programs. It is astonishing to live in a state where nearly every child of hispanic heritage gets free school lunch, free medical, dental, vision, section 8 housing, headstart, cash assistance, food stamps, exempt for paying for enrollment fees in schools, sports etc.. You name it, it is free to NON citizens while our citizens work their butts off to just make ends meat. Sad that we have been sold out by our government (all past and current) on this issue. Anytime someone tries to correct this problem (Arizona) they are labeled racist and that is the end of the conversation. Would love to have a president with some balls DO THE RIGHT THING FOR OUR CITIZENS and stop pandering for future votes.

We hire these politicians to enforce OUR constitution and to make laws the govern the U.S. citizen, why do the insist on protecting ILLEGAL ALIENS OVER U.S. CITIZENS???

I agree wholeheartedly to your comments, but you forget another important factor of why 'Hispanics/Latino children outnumber the rest.' It isn't just anchor babies, or immediate family members (legal or illegal) coming and migrating into the US. But the truth is, many of the Caucasian women along with the Black American women abort their children much more than any other races combined. Whereas, the Hispanics are known to have children more abundantly. If I may suggest, if you truly care about your race and want to prevent it from becoming the minority or worse, possible extinction, then America be fruitful and be open to life and everything else will follow suit.

Theamerican, who told you health care is to be free? Health care is going to cost you more than if you had purchased your own policy...Today you will pay for all of your healthcare. While you are studying illegals, you need to read the healthcare bill.. There are many taxes in the bill, your homes, your vehicles, everything you eat, taxes are going to eat you alive. Please educate yourselves on this obamacare.. Its an absolute joke. The only ones that will receive low cost HC will be the illegal and the very poor. BUT it will be health care you will not want.. You get what you pay for.

They may be children but they know they are breaking the law and do so of their own free will. Makes you wonder if they would continue to operate outside the law.

Probably a huge exaggeration, but they portray these poor little innocent kids with no parents as having nothing, so they had to of stolen everything they needed from Central America to the US. That's a long walk..should be pretty good thieves by the time they get here (if that were true). I don't believe they walked all that way or would even attempt it on their own for a second, adults are nearby somewhere, laughing at us for taking care of them. But what can you do? We aren't barbaric, we have to be suckers and take care of them.

These days there doesn't seem to be easy answers for anything.

One that Obama stood and Swore an Oath to.Of course he and his traitors believe that the constitution and our Laws mean nothing to them. We need to Fight our Congress and Reps.and Make them pass E-Verify for Everyone. We have got to replace Obama in November. That will take care of Holder and Napolitano who refuse to let out Border Patrol do their job.And ANY Representative who disagrees needs to be voted OUT! As Romney said.We do not have to round them up,We do not have to deport them. If they can not find a job? They will return home Or Go to another country On Their Own! We Have The Power. If We will stick together and Fight Back!

wow I am amazed at the comments here. seems to me most people have this impression that it cost nothing to cross the border illegally. Well I can say I have read that these "poor" people pay thousands of dollars to smugglers to bring them across the border. so my question is this if they can put together 2 to 5 thousand dollars to come here why can't they use it to feed thier children there or perhaps use it to move to a better location in thier own country. It seems to me that 2 thousand dollars goes a very long way down in south america. so now lets get real. they do this because our gov has decided to give them free everything so why stay home and pay when for a one time expense you can get a free ride. sounds good to me. so to be clear these impoverished people are not so unable to provide they are just unwilling.

What a silly liberal view and claptrap argument. The overwhelmingly vast majority of the often cited "ancestors" you refer to came to this country in an appropriate manner. They came prior to

On the off chance you are misinformed - There are currently US Immigration Laws governing immigration, formal procedures for coming and staying here and authorized ports of entry. None of these include: I can come because I want to whenever I want to , my country is poor or I am unhappy. And for a further
surprise none of these authorized points of entry include walking across the Arizona desert, crossing the Rio Grande, etc at any point you wish or climbing or destroying a fence or barrier. I am certain these laws/rules also apply to the youngsters that are addressed in this article.

The kids are her waiting for a coyote to lead them accorss the border and their parents just came across the border. That means if the population of children has doubled then it's likely the population of illegal aliens have also arrived.Secondly,I doubt the figures as to where they are from but instead It's a ploy by the parents, who are well informed as to the procedures of the Border Patrol, that they immediately claim they are from somewhere else than Mexico. They are just trying to make sure to their ninos get here in time to qualify for Obamycare and also for the "brought here as a kid program".They have and are going to flood the borders as we sit by and watch as we,Americans provide healthcare to half of Mexico. God help your system!

Why there are even TV shows showing the struggles the border patrols have preventing and rounding up illegals. Ya ...really! President Obama plan now has the least number of illegals coming through pre Bush era.

If you feel so strong about your convictions, why not join Border Patrol, or U.S. Military?.......Because you would be rejected......Romney hires illegals....going after him are you?.......

Boy, you people are so ill-informed! Obama's directive was about enforcement and it directed law enforcement to focus its efforts on illegal aliens who committed criminal acts, adult illegal aliens, etc. It didn't say everyone was to be given automatic citizenship. The kids that are to receive consideration are those who brought here as children and have lived here for at least five years and are able to graduate from high-school. If they are going to college or if they join our military they may apply for citizenship. That's all, just apply, no guarantees.

These are children who are showing up at the border, scared and innocent children. We don't have to let them in, but we should at least be able to be a little sympathetic. They are fleeing from their own countries because their parents are dead, or in prison. They have little, if any chance of surviving a trip with a coyote. If a coyote does bring them across, they will probably be sold into child prostitution. So I think a little human compassion is in order. This is not a life anyone of us would wish for.

I agree that we need to close our borders. I'm not as concerned about illegal Mexican workers as I am about the fact that our borders are not secure. If a Mexican illegal can get into this country, so can a terrorist. That causes me a lot of concern.

But the remarks about illegals pouring across our borders? Not true, many illegals are going back to Mexico because there are no jobs here for them. More illegals have been deported under Obama than any other President. At this point, the number of illegal aliens in this country is on a very slight decline. As for deporting them all? Good luck with that. There are estimated 10 million of them. We would have to put all of our resources into the effort, with nothing left over for anything else, and we still would probably fail to get more than half.

The trouble is they are brown children. OMG I can only wonder what it must feel like to be on your own so young. For Gods sake these are children. Even if you do not want them here at least do what is best for them. THEY are CHILDREN. I have never seen such ugly against kids. They are not responsible for what has happened it is the friggin adults. I know they probably are not staying I just hope some one cares for them. And they are not left to fend for themselves.

I categorically disagree with republicans on every issue except this one if you don't think the illegals do harm to citizens economically...you're insane american citizens( chefs) come to my place of employment everyday looking for work I just shake my head...in new york if you aren't a really experienced executive chef...you need not apply....Every single restaurant in new york has a kitchen staff almost exclusively made up of illegals except the for the exec. chef. There are illegal immigrants that I work with that make more money than me....don't get me wrong I have a bit of sympathy and empathy for them so I don't blame them for coming but we (the US) should not harbor any shame or blame for deporting them they are doing what is best for them, and we have to do the best for the U.S.

A strange part of this story is that the spokespersons for Health and Human Services and Border Patrol are "not allowed to explain" the reasons why they cannot discuss this issue.

If the spokespersons for these agencies that are funded by "we the people's" money are not "are not allowed to explain" the reasons they cannot discuss an issue, then the press has a responsibility to find someone in the agency who WILL explain.

I agree with you in that we should show compassion for the children. Many that are crossing from Mexico, started out as a family unit. Then the drug cartels see them. They then keep the women and children to force the man of the family to run their drugs across the border. He does this in hopes of saving his family; but usually, the women are raped and sometimes the children too. If the drug cartel sees no value in the women and children they slaughter them right there after they've "had their fun".

I am against these illegal crossings for what it does to them as well as what it does to us. I have a solution to this. It can be seen under the Issues section of my website at klane the peoples president dot com

I too am running for President of the United States because I don't believe that we can trust ANY professional politician to do what is right for the citizens of America.

Yesterday, I turned in my paperwork to the Federal Election Commission to change my party affiliation from Republican to Independent. I am declaring my independence from the party line, and from the media.

We have an obligation to get our country back on track. A lot of the immigration problem comes from border crossings, but more comes from expired student or work visas that never gets enforced. The terrorists from 9-11 had expired visas. They came here legally on student visas and then simply stayed. We can not and should not be giving blanket amnesty to illegals. This is one of the most dangerous things that is happening in our government today. The next most dangerous is the leaking of our secrets to the press just to make Mr. Obama "look tough".

I hope people will think long and hard about supporting a political party. Since I got in this race, I have seen that the system I believed in all these years is so flawed I almost didn't believe it. Both parties, decide for us who we get to vote on in the primaries and it IS all about the money. Look at the Republican front-runner. He raised the most money...doesn't matter if he believes in the party line. (Didn't even matter that he could not take a stand on any issue without changing his mind. He finally settled on what the Republican Party wanted him to say.) Mr. Obama also raised the most money for his party. (It doesn't even matter that he is trying and succeeding in destroying this country.) It's ALL ABOUT THE MONEY.

I will be running as an Independent because I firmly believe there are good ideas in both groups and there are ideas that need to be done away with in both groups. I believe that an Independent President will actually be able to get both parties to work together. If neither party believes the President is biased, then maybe they will listen.

I simply want our country back on track. If you do too, I urge you to at least look at the ideas under the Issues section of my website...then, if you like the People's Plan, then just vote for me in November. It really IS that simple.

                                    Happy Independence Day Everybody!

Now back to the children. Parents or relatives must be hiring coyotes to bring them in to join them someplace. Coyotes are known for getting the money and dumping the victims.

KREDcorn....you need to ask Romney why he kept hiring illegals and then letting them go rather than turn them in to ICE when he was caught. ...Twice.....Do search on...Romney hires illegals.....get educated .....

Have a spanish lady friend who we used to give donations to that took them thru her church to Reynosa,Mexico to help with the orphans till she got too old to make the trips. She told me a lot of the woman that had babys there simply dropped them off at the nearest orphanage or church and went thier own way. Not saying this is the way all over Mexico, but could be part of the reason so many kids coming here on thier own. Just curious if Mexico has its own type of Child Protection agency?

Those who wish to be must put aside the alienation, get on with the fascination, the real relation, the underlying theme.

These are unaccompanied minors - children - THAT ARE BEING STOPPED FROM ENTERING THE UNITED STATES.

How dumb can the uptight Right become? The article focuses on doing exactly what the neanderthal conservatives want done - and - they are complaining about it?

Hey Knucklehead - child immigrant 13-year-old Lorena Rodriguez, from El Salvador, appears to have been brought deep into the US by the Democrats . She now lives with her adult sister and other family members in Boston.

Democrats should be given the bill for each and every one

What if there is no home to go home to? I am done. My heart breaks for the little ones. Keep up the ugly words.

Sharon, send the Dept. of Health and Human Resources in Texas and Arizona your address, so they can send all these children to your home so you can take care of them. Problem solved.

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! My heart breaks, too!!! Life is hard. Fact. We have kids here in the U.S. beaten to death and abandoned everyday. We have an epidemic of autistic and mentally challenged kids who will NEVER get any kind of chance for a decent, independent life. Where are your tears for them?

Maybe you should get out of your comfy house and either do something or donate ALL your income to this problem. No no....much easier to PRETEND to care and expect OTHERS to do something. Keep up the self-indulgent words.
