There was an error in your report... E.T. ate Reese's Pieces, which are not chocolate. They are peanut butter!

Brian! Reese's pieces are not chocolate!

Major factual error on NBC Nightly News!!!! In Lee Cowan's story on the health benefits of chocolate, he said chocolate was given to E.T. as a peace offering. THOSE WERE REESE'S PIECES! M&M turned down a deal to be featured in the movie.

        Reply#3 - Tue Aug 30, 2011 7:05 PM EDT

ET did not eat chocolate. It was Reese's Pieces which are peanut butter, but I am sure ET would still be here if it was chocolate.

Regarding chocolate being good for your heart - there was one mistake likely only important to movie-goers: chocolate was NOT used to lure / make friends (whatever the correspondent said) with ET. It was Reeses Pieces. Those are peanut butter.

I noticed your story that aired on TV showed E.T. and Reese's Pieces. The problem is that Reese's Pieces do NOT contain any chocolate!

              Reply#6 - Tue Aug 30, 2011 7:06 PM EDT

It was said in the news story that chocolate was used to coax an Alien. They used Reeses Pieces in ET which were Peanut Butter, Not Chocolate.

last time i checked the peace offering to E.T. was recies peanut butter candies not m&ms. which was how resies pieces was was made popular. your segment on chocolate had given some incorrect information, I'm just informing you of this so it may be corrected for a later date

Although m&m's were originally planned to be used in the movie E.T. It ended up being Reeces Peices which are candy coated peanut butter candies that contain no chocolate. That is actually how Reeses Pieces were made popular & well known.

the story about shooting guns in the air has me wondering...once the bullet reaches it's maximum velocity it will fall at the same speed that it would if you let it drop form your finger tips, and I don't think that would be fast enough to kill or seriously hurt anyone. It would not come down as fast as it went up

Good Evening Mr.Williams, a fine broadcast this evening as always. Ones thoughts and prayers go out to all along the Eastcoast who are struggling in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene.

The report by Michelle Franzen from New Jersey showed how so many communities are under massive flood waters with families being rescued from their homes which are now lost. The situation in Vermont is extremely tragic with residents being cut off in their towns. It was somewhat encouraging to hear from Vermont Commissioner Keith Flynn the number of communities cut off has come down from 13 to 11 even though that is not much it is still some positive news. Using all their resources available is setting up essential services to help people. Everyone helping eachother and being resilient against the aftermath of the horrible storm.

Truly some heartbreaking decisions are being made by residents on whether to remain in the area or rebuild elsewhere. Such a tragic situation.

The cost of the crisis is staggering in the billions of dollars. FEMA running low on funding with the costs of this disaster rising. It was awful to learn the loss and damage as a result of the storm on the farming business. Tremendous losses.

On another note the report by Stephanie Gosk from Libya told of Qadhafi whereabouts still being unknown even though his family has escaped to Algeria. Seeing the inside of his home certainly revealed a lavish lifestyle with the indoor pool, marble floors, silk sheets and large dining table still set for dinner. Libyans still believing Qadhafi will stay and fight until the end. Time will tell.

Heartwrenching to see the black labrador dog lying in front of the casket of the US Navy Seal. Loyal friend until the end. Brings tears.

Great picture taken by Richard of the sign in Libya saying to stop firing in the air.

Good piece by Mr.Cowan about the benefits of chocolate.

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to You and to All!

                      Be Well Everyone!

Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard!

Take Extra,Extra Good Care Richard and Crew!

I was very disappointed in this broadcast... they did not even mention that it is DARK chocolate (usually higher than 70% cacao content) that has health benefits, and that also has any significant amount of caffeine. Milk chocolate has very little cacao, especially Hershey's chocolate! Not to mention that baked cakes, desserts, M&M's and Reese's and candy bars, etc are all just candy and desserts and not much actual chocolate!

I hope that all of your viewers don't go and buy these items thinking that they have some health benefit. -Kamini

I also remarked to my wife that DARK chocolate, the beneficial chocolate, was not mentioned. It should have been made clear that milk chocolate has very little, if any, benefit. It is also much higher in it's sugar content. The report was misleading. One can also look up the ORAC rating of dark chocolate to see the antioxidants it provides. Real dark chocolate has one of the highest numbers.

The Black Lab sweet dog paying respects to his military owner stopped me in my tracks & I cried a lot, look at it & not the chocolate, it is so much more important & I would have liked to have seen more on this story, will the black lab Hawk Eye go the the servicemans family retired now or does he have to go back out into the field, surely NOT! He was so sad he has lost his best friend, God Bless our military!

Brian with all the news reported and the victims suffering from the Hurricane it seems the only attention went to reese's pieces and ET. It says alot about America when three disasters with millions suffering and another Hurricane on the way and all that's discussed is correcting the fact that Hershey Company makes a candy that doesn't have chocolate and you said it did. Thanks for a great report on the news of the day it's just to funny and sad at the same time.

I wish the GOP hadn't cut the disaster funding because it seems another Hurricane is on the way and who knows what else. I did like King Cantor say what he would put on the agenda when he gets back from his vacation, no word on the Speaker of the House on what he thinks of his bosses idea. Boehner did get a smack down in the letter Boehner's lobbyist staff sent to the President.

                                have a great evening all

Evidently the meeting between Pres. Obama and the CEO of Comcast has resulted in orders for you to forget about reporting real news and anything negative about the Obama adminstration.

How about some news about why the changes in the DOJ with people connected with the Fast and Furious gun running operation that I think you have left out of your reporting.

You missed anything on DOJ/FBI raid on a guitar factory costing them 2-3 million dollars.

How about Obamas' illegal uncle being caught for a DUI and being here after 19 years after a deportation hearing and he was to be deported. For sure he will remain here now and be given a home and welfare.

Come on Brian, the net is really making you look bad. could be part of the reason viewership continues to drop.

Here's what's been happening on Nightly News this week:

Sat. Aug. 27--Brian personally anchored Saturday's Nightly News. Obviously, he didn't feel that Lester Holt could do an adequate job of reading the hurricane news off the teleprompter. Viewers were treated to a 2:50 report on how Hurricane Irene is affecting the Jersey Shore. Because honestly--is there a more important place in the country than the Jersey Shore?
Sun. Aug. 28--Brian anchored again because he didn't think that Lester was up to the task. The lead story was how Hurricane Irene affected--you guessed it--the all-important Jersey Shore. Finally, eight minutes into the broadcast, we saw a report about how Irene affected a small town near the Jersey Shore called New York City. And why was Anne Thompson wearing a huge beaming smile while reporting on the hurricane? Was there something funny that we should know about? Also, Brian referred to the Weather Channel's Jim Cantore and WNBC meteorologist Janice Huff as "two of the very best in the weather business." He said this twice. I remember back in the 70's when WNBC meteorologist Frank Field was sometimes accompanied on-air by Winston the Weather Dog. No doubt Brian would describe Winston as "one of the very best in the weather business" because he worked for an NBC affiliate. I guess all of the meteorologists who work for other networks are strictly second-rate. Sam Champion? More like Sam Chump-ion.
Mon. Aug. 29--An excerpt from an interview with Dick Cheney is just a shameless promo for Cheney's upcoming appearances on "Dateline" and "Today". Brian then took a minute-and-a-half to report the "big news" (his words) that Beyonce is pregnant. Really. I mean it. This was an actual news story on a network newscast the day after a hurricane hit the east coast. I'm not kidding. The story also included lots of footage from MTV's Video Music Awards--including Lady Gaga dressed as a man. Brian's comment: "Lady Gaga as a guy--in fact a guy who for a time couldn't stop talking." Wait a second--there's someone else I'm thinking of on TV who can't stop talking. But I can't quite remember his name. I'll let you know if it comes back to me. For at least the second time in two weeks, Brian name-dropped Jay-Z and Kanye West. Is there anyone he won't pander to? The managing editor of thegrio.com (in yet another plug for a Comcast/NBC property) said that Beyonce's pregnancy is, "...like the Royal Wedding--something exciting that people can vicariously be excited about..." So I guess Nightly News will be bringing us three or four minutes a night about Beyonce, just like they did with Will & Kate. Has Nightly News secured the rights to be in the delivery room when the baby is born? I can imagine a day six or seven months in the future when Brian will begin the broadcast by saying, "Khaddafy is finally caught, but first our lead story--it's a girl for Beyonce and Jay-Z! And Kanye was there, too!"
Tues. Aug 30--For the third time in five days, the lead Nightly News story is how Hurricane Irene affected (all together now) the Jersey Shore. It must be great to have your own newscast so you can report on your home state as often as you like. Also, Brian referred to Vermont as a "great state". Is there a single state that Brian hasn't called "great"? If every state in the U.S. is great, then that completely defeats the purpose of the description. I mean, if every human had super powers, they wouldn't really be super because everyone had them, right? A story on a new lung cancer drug turned out to be a two-minute plug for Pfizer. That's hardly surprising. Once again, Robert Bazell used his position as NBC News Chief Science Correspondent to shill for one of NBC's biggest sponsors. Brian also reported that Michael Vick signed a new six-year $100-million contract with the Eagles. Actually, that's only slightly more than Brian himself will earn over the next six years. But don't tell anyone. Brian wants his viewers to think of him as a good ol' regular blue-collar working class guy. You know--like a character in a Springsteen song. The final story was a two-and-a-half minute piece about the benefits of chocolate. There were no fewer than eight clear shots of Hershey products (and several of M & M products). That's known in the business as "product placement". Usually, the advertiser pays to have their product featured in a movie, TV show or news report. If no one from NBC denies this was a paid product placement, we should just assume that it was. And again I ask: Has Lee Cowan ever once reported on a story that has even the tiniest shred of news value? I don't think so. But at least we got to see some neat clips from "E.T." and "Forrest Gump". Because Brian and his producers can't go more than a few days without including a movie or TV clip (or clips) in a Nightly News story. It's just their way of making Nightly News more and more indistinguishable from the shows that follow it--"Access Hollywood" and "Extra".

What a day in Jersey as President Obama has to review the disasters because the elected officials from those States are on vacation and funding raising right now. No worries the officials will be back to ask for the vote to get re elected. The House has had jobs on the agenda since Obama took office as those orders to make sure Obama/USA fail seem to be working. President Obama has been put on notice by the GOP either do as he's told and agree to end Federal Programs/Health Care or the people get no help in the three disasters.

We asked for honest leadership and Gov. Perry is being honest. If elected he will repeal the US Constitution and replace it with the Confederate Constitution as people will finally know their place and just pay their taxes without any rights. Bachmann and Paul have talked around it but Perry just gets right to the point. All this fuss about rights, immigration and equality will end. Just think of so many leaders before Perry who fought all their life to get the South to raise again and here comes Gov. Perry getting it done. Bachmann spoke of how great it would be for black kids to be slaves, Paul spoke of how he would take the country back to the 1900's when life was good. Mitt is just paid for and would let the Corporations run the White House. Yes it seems Barack Obama scared the South so much the Koch Bros are fighting the fight their Father fought all his life. Many are asking who will be the VP choice. Well with a large Hispanic voting poll it seems New Mexico Governor is a front runner as Governors Haley/Jindal aren't needed anymore. Jeb Bush has his family to get his brother a large Hispanic vote and it's needed again. The States that signed bills to disenfranchise voters is now running into legal problems.

Under oath means nothing to Banks as they openly lie and laugh afterward as to how easy it is. Banks still fabricating documents one year after Robo-Signing scandal broke. Banks are still illegally foreclosing on homes and holding out that the new President can help. The Law Makers are doing the best they can to stall any criminal action as Obama is fighting for the people. The GOP majority made sure Elizabeth Warren would not get the job to help and protect the people from the corrupt banks. Bank of America is smart as their cutting their lost and getting out of the mortgage business with 80 per cent of their mortgage loans have no Trustee/Leaders and the rest are robo signed and over charging.

Cheney has opened the box of secrets and now the rats are turning on the rats. Libyan rebels are releasing documents that show appointees of the Bush Administration working to help Gaddafi keep control and stop NATO and President Obama. I wondered why the GOP wanted to IMPEACH the President for joining in NATO'S mission when this has always happen with other President. I knew our Law Maker know Obama was within his right as President but why all these attacks. Well now it seems all this was to protect Gaddafi and try to get President Obama to back down. Even Rep. Kucinch was even working with Gaddafi's sons on a play to keep power. McCain/Graham working to give Gaddafi US weapons and the close friendship/help from the Bush Administration. All this and finally the US is reporting the murder of children in Iraq that was already told by the foreign press when it happen. The man who toss his shoes about Bush was speaking for many who were killed by the USA and our leaders covered it up with the help of the hand picked Iraq leaders. So much more horror was done and it will come out as secret always do.

We're doing a food drive for the citizens who lost food with the electic power lost for so long. I have read how some feel no big deal but it is when it happen to you. We had so many disasters in California it just normal to reach out and help where you can. What a vacation I'm having out here on the East Coast.

See you same time same place

Kucinch is a moron. On NBC Local news a clip of him saying G.E.'s Jeffrey Immelt

should resign from Pres. Obama's Committe. Well, for his information, Immelt

has done a U-Turn on outsourcing and is to be commended. It's a start for

keeping jobs in America. My husband who took an early retirement from GE

was thrilled with this news. Phyllis
