It was an emotional moment this morning to watch the last shuttle go up during our live coverage of the event -- knowing it also meant the end of the manned U.S. space program. It could be argued that it gave America some of its best days, and led to some of our greatest scientific and technological advances. I look around my car -- and 80 percent or more of the technology in it can be traced to developments from the space program.
I also wanted to call your attention to a story I found -- and had not known before -- about a military action that resulted in a post-World War II first. This is from a supplement to Stars and Stripes. Enjoy, and take a moment to remember those fighting in uniform overseas. We hope you can join us tonight and have a good weekend.

Brian: The launch of Atlantis went off perfectly. This is not the end of the U.S. Manned Spacecraft Program. We will transition into more flights beyond low earth orbit. The shuttle program has been a grand sucess over the last 30 years. Even though future manned flights, such as trips to the International Space Station, will be handed over to the Russians, there are private companies waiting to put their rockets into space. It may take some years, but our Manned Space Problem will be back, on track.
I read the article you mentioned, in the Stars and Stripes. Talk about an act of bravery, this event is at the top of the list. All viewers shouid read it. I'll catch you on tonight's broadcast, and tell New Jersey, hello.
What a sad day now that we have to depend on the Russians now for our space rides. Thanks Obama.
You say "an unbelieveable turn of events" in Egypt. Seems like everyone except MSM and the political elites realized the Muslum Brotherhood would be taking over the government. Best wishes to Isreal.
I think you NBCers need to start promoting another Trillion dollar union giveaway.
Trillion dollar union giveaway jumped out at me because of a book I have "The Trillion-Dollar Conspiracy"
which I have not read so what I am quoting may be out of context:
America's corporations and businesses are sitting on $3 Trillion that they refuse to invest to create
jobs.
The function of the Federal Reserve is to foster a flow of money and credit that will ficilitate orderly
economic growth, a stable dollar. and long-run balance in our internatinal payments.."
But according to the author the media controls what I read. And this book may top the list.:o)
Phyllis, You appear to be the typical progressive. Here we have all these companies setting on all this cash and you feel they are to take this money and build and/or expand their companies and hire lots and lots of people. First off, companies are not in business to create jobs. They are in business to create (CAUTION: I'm going to say a dirty word) wealth. A product of creating this wealth is JOBS as long as a profit can be maintained and people buy your product. The problem President Obama has created with his anti-business retoric and his mountain of new regulations and healthcare is these companies have no idea what their costs are going to be to cover the healthcare and all the new regulations so it is their duties to their shareholders to set on the cash.
Demonize the private jet owners, Obama had the tax break inserted into the stimulis for them a tax break. Demonize big oil for billions in profits when their return on every dollar they invest is only 7 cents and he praises a company like Google who has a return of around 40 cents on each dollar invested. As long as Obama and his administration continues to pick the winners and losers in business, they will set on the sidelines. Remember the car companies, the winners were the unions. The common people lost their shirts.
General Electric: Progress is our most important product (Ronald Reagan)
A typlcal progressive? hmmmmm! The more things change the more they stay the same.
I never saw myself as a progressive but if I am I got it from my years with General Electric
so you can take it or leave it because it's who I am. "If I do not wear it on my sleeve then I am
not who I am (SHAKESPERE-ms)" I have a good friend whose husband retired from G.E. and she
taught that great master and also Diane Sawyer was a student in one class; such a brilliant lady.and
I think a lot of her and see her on the Fourth Monday of each month.
What you see is what you get. Have a nice weekend!!!
In defense of Phyllis. She doesn't strike me as the type to intentionally lie, cheat steal and then cloak herself in some fraudulent claim that she's feathering her own bed for the greater good. Must not be a "progressive" bahahhaha
As far as loyalty to old name brands goes, I use to be loyal to GM. That's gone away now.
Thanks, Dave, but I did cheat death, and I have a work in progress with two working titles:
OMG,The Rapture or Eve's Ransom. Lesley prefers Eve's Ransom. I thought she would have
picked OMG, The Rapture but you never know with Generation X and that's why I have so much
fun with her. I will have to google "Progressive" but I do not think I am one. As a woman thinketh,
so is she, etc. etc etc I have been told by some that I am too honest. Which has its pluses and minues.
Let' say if I was given truth serum, I would not be in trouble. The minus I would tell him off and then
be in trouble. Even when I go hunting with Kyle in camouflage, I get in trouble (just kidding) If however,
I make my bed I will lie in it. O, I just got back from Half-Price Books, and bought
The Immortal Wife by Irving Stone. Hey, I could go with that title since a title is not copyrighted/ Of
interest, perhaps, The Book of Dave is still in stock.
Dave, I must not be a progressive. In re-reading Apocalypse by D.H. Lawrence,
Chapter 9, opening paragraph "Well then, let us return to the Apocalypse, with this in mind:
that the Apocalypse is in still its movement, one of the works of the pagan civilization, and in
it we have , not the modern process of progressive thought, but the old pagan of rotary
imagine thought.." I believe the Book of Revelation was written for the End time which is now ,
so is revelant and therefore I am not a progressive. Well, that clears that up, huh? Phyllis
Thanks Brian for being one of the few in the news media to recognize and voice the fact that today's final shuttle mission may be the end of US manned space program. It is just hard to believe that we will have to rely on Russian capabilities to get our astronauts into space over the next how many years.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, A great broadcast this evening as always! Always wonderful to see Richard on the broadcast!
Very sad to see the last space shuttle launch today. An ending of an era of 30yrs of space shuttle launches and other manned space missions. It was a beautiful launch and one wishes the BEST to the crew of the Atlantis. One hopes the next chapter in the space missions is just as exciting and fascinating!
Now on to the broadcast. First of all the report by Mr.Costello on the final launch of the space shuttle with the Atlantis. It was wonderful to see 3/4 of a million people watch the shuttle take off. It is sad so many people will be losing their jobs though and one hopes the best for all of them. They have been part of an exciting time of space exploration.
Nice hearing from Captain Mark Kelly about the changes in the space program even though now the United States will have to rely on the Russians to travel into space. But the future is still very bright for all the US space program.
Richard's report from Tahrir Square showed how the people are angry and frustrated at the slow pace of the forming of a new government. Seeing the massive protests of over 100,000 protestors in Tahrir Sqaure reminds one of the revolution during the winter that brought down Mubarek and his regime. The young activists are fearing the momentum and influence of power of the military and the Muslim Brotherhood. The difference of the offices of the young activists being very small and the Muslim Brotherhood located at a luxury villa is staggering. Leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood going out and campaigning while making a huge influence on the people. One hopes peace will be the norm.
Excellent Reporting As Always Richard!
It is great to see a woman being in command at the Marine Recruiting Training center. She has served her country bravely and with dedication and it is nice she meets with the families.
Hope the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have a great trip to California!
Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams! Have a wonderful weekend! Peace to You and to All!
Be Well Everyone!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard! Excellent Reporting As Always!
Take Extra Good Care Richard and Crew!
Lisa
Yes, it was good to see Richard Engel on the broadcast. Five months, imagine that. Paul was in Ephesus
five month and the rest is history; and I do not believe this is routine history we are witnessing in the
Middle East. Richard once said nothing like this has ever happened before. Brian, I must say you are a
clever wordsmith, and I will tune in next week, of course Have a nice weekend. Phyllis
PS "....But it is all right, because today is Bloomsday, and all of us can serve as witnesses that
anything can happen during a Bloomsday summer. Yes, that is it: anything can happen Yes"
South of Broad, by Pat Conroy, another brilliant masterpiece by Mr. Conroy, reviewed by
Lester Holt on The Today Show when it was first published, 2009; now in quality paperback.
Brian, I look forward to this week's"Carmageddon" because of Kentucky's Speedway which may prove to be
as big as the Kentucky Derby, Awesome! Our neighbors attended this event on Saturday. This is as
good as it gets even though Interstate 71 is a disaster, which we take when we go to our daughter's-
and I will dubb 71 as Carmageddon this weekend. Phyllis
JustBFair. I still think America's corporations and businesses are job creaters. And most on HuffPost agree
with me , sure, but that jobs are created for overseas Which is the rub. At one time General Electric --
Appliance Park, employed 15,000 or 20,000 people, but, of course, now the number has dropped
dramatically because of outsourcing. I hope I am not stepping on CEO Jeffrey Immelt's toes, not my intent,
but keep most of the jobs in America is what I think should be done. I'm not opposed to outsourcing on
a smaller level., however. It's all about jobs. I am not a business woman, just a domestic engineer,
but I get that.
Phyllis, American businesses can create jobs. All they need is to know that if they invest money into expansions and adding employees that the government is not going to come in and change the game plans each year with regulations, taxes, union gifts, etc. Good example, Boeing building a plant in South Caroline, hiring 1000 workers, and now the government is supporting the NLRB attempt to shut it down because it is in a right to work state. Does this make anyone wonder why any U.S. company wants to fight the government and just say it is so much easier to move it off shore.
hola, brian, i am still recouping from my trip to burning hot phoenix for the 4th of july week-end, watched the fireworks at the white house and with the boston pops on t.v. we have monsoons in sierra vista, they hadn't hit phoenix, yet, i hope they have by now. was caught in a dust storm outside of tucson on way back to s.v., glad my sister was driving! back many moons ago when i visited the presidio complex in tucson, there were murals on the wall of spacemen and rockets. aztec style. and there was a display of 3 clear cubicles, tall enough for a man/woman, being in manic mode, i envisioned them to be teleporation devices. sure would be nice to have something like that to transport astronauts/cosmonauts to the space station and beyond. a wormhole to the moon would be fantastic:-) i am very tired, it might be the barometric pressure from the monsoons, the morning glories in the large pots that i usually plant the tomatoes in are loving the rain. no blooms yet, but giant leaves. was reading an article today about all of the african-american families that have fallen out of middle class back to poverty level because of the great recession. their numbers are much higher compared to white families. i hope it is a short-term picture. maryland has a mortgage program in place for those who were losing their homes. i hope other states followed suit. i wonder how they are going to put into use all of that gold that was found underneath the white house in vaults from the civil war era. it's supposed to make a sizeable dent in america's debt. when the king-size duvets come that i ordered, i will get over to the parents' house and start hanging them on the studs since they had to gut all of the interior walls, except the bathrooms, when the pipes froze in february. makes me think of the fabric of spacetime . . . . . the pattern on the duvets is a lattice stripe and higgs bosons run on a lattice. no $ for dry wall, the house was not insured because work was still in progress to make it livable again after the parents' passing. don't know what i am going to do about the ceilings. we will fix it up a little bit at a time, now, and the duvets can come down as we go. it's too depressing to just see all of those studs! i sure hope all of the people who got flooded out around the country had good home insurance. ours was an unfortunate situation. best, anna martina
JustBFair, I tried 6 times replying on your post with no success so a new post, sorry about that. Anyway
outsourcing was a big reason why my husband took an early retirement from General Electric --
Appliance Park in Louisville --and most men were also fed up. I believe the elder president Bush was
to blame for sending the jobs to foreign countries. Anyway, your comments are interesting and I love
exchanging ideas with all bloggers, brings me up to speed; but I still say keep the jobs in America. Which
would be a solution to the economy problem in our country.
They love GE's Immelt in Detroit and think he is The Second Coming!!! And he had a problem
with Moses. Imagine that. well, you never know!!!
CEO Jeffrey Immelt endeared himself to me when asked to take this position with G.E. "How hard can it
be? It's not like Moses going up to Mt. Sinai with the Tablets. What's not to like about him? Phyllis
Taxes are at historic low, and the United States is second only to Iceland in low Corporate tax
rate. Where are the jobs? And why am I not feeling reassured?
Thinking of those fighting overseas, a quote from Dwight D. Eishenhower: "Indeed, I think that
people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of their way
and let them have it."
