    Refusing free firefighting help

While Luna residents were preparing to evacuate and scrambling to protect their property, the northwest quarter of the state was choking in smoke and the government was pouring millions of dollars into containment of the Wallow Fire, the U. S. Forest Service refused to allow a free demonstration of a remarkable new firefighting tool.

The Geltech Corporation of Florida has developed FireIce, a soluble powder that turns into a clear jell that will not burn. As a free attempt to demonstrate this product they sent a semi truckload to Reserve and they furnished a pumper truck, portable pumps, pressure washers and a five-man crew of operators. Approval came from the upper echelons of the Forest Service but there was an apparent communications gap between there and the commanders in the fire camp.

Bystanders were given demonstrations: You could dip your hand in the solutions then hold it in front of a blowtorch and not feel the heat. It was edible, bio-degradable and not harmful. You could lick it off your fingers. Though recommended for 72-hour protection, a dry plank that had been soaked the previous week still wouldn't burn.

But the Forest Service answer was, "We aren't going to use it! Get it out of here!" One excuse was that the fire was a federal problem and they didn't want to assist in any commercial exploitation. They had allowed the use of a rented forklift that was in the fire camp to unload the truck but declined that permission after they ordered the removal.

The fire still raged when I became involved. The Fireice crew hired me and my forklift to reload their merchandise and equipment so they could leave town without using either.

Thanks to Janet Shamlian for her report from Los Alamos. Evacuating 44,000 people is a major job and we hope for everyone to return safely to their homes without damage.

I remember two or three years ago a person in California invented a system that when fire was close to a building it would engulf the building in a foam that would last 3 days and make the building fire proof. Why has this system not been used to its fullest.
