Putting competition aside

Because competition stops at the water's edge, and because some things -- like the safety of journalists -- are more important, I'm proud to say we hosted a great luncheon here today. Our News Division President Steve Capus invited a number of us -- and his network counterparts -- to a gathering where we talked about the safety and well-being of the freelance journalists (and their families) on whom we depend from time to time and from story to story around the world. We have all worked with them. I have come to know many of them -- some I only see overseas. They often go where others aren't willing to go, taking huge risks. When the worst happens, we are often left to care for their families as a community. Today's presentation was by the Director of the Rory Peck Trust, an organization named, founded and funded in memory of a New York-born cameraman. Its a good organization and an important cause to our profession.

We hope you can join us for Nightly News tonight.

Brian: It's great to know there is an organization that looks out for families in need when something unexpected happens to a reporter who finds him or herself in harms way. As I mentioned before foreign journalists risk their lives every day in the hot spots of the world. I hope many viewers are aware of that. They should all be awarded commendations for the work they perform. I'm glad Richard is back to relate his latest experiences from Libya. He definately should be rewarded for his excellent Mid-East coverage; however I am not excluding those counterparts from the other major networks. They all cover the heat of battle and will be ready for the next event. I'll catch you on tonight's broadcast.

Brian, I found your exchange with Richard Engel so interesting and that he thought it would end in Jerusalem.

In the book JERUSALEM, JERUSALEM, which I have not read yet, by James Carrol, on page 294-295, he writes

about Bush and Obama and ends with "The religious war that America insisted was not religious beat on. The

unseen but always felt pulse of that beating remained Jerusalem." Phyllis

Good Evening Mr.Williams, Another great broadcast this evening as always! Always wonderful to see Richard on the broadcast and in the New York Studio is even better!

It is wonderful to know there is an organization called the Rory Peck Trust named after a New York cameraman that protects the safety of journalists. The foreign journalists reporting from wartorn regions where there is intense fighting and the overall situation is volatile need to be protected. So many of these journalists are so brave in reporting from these areas. Richard does brave and excellent reporting from all the regions in the Middle East always wanting him to be extra, extra safe and well.

Now on to the broadcast. First of all Richard's report on the several fronts in the Middle East region. Richard stating that Mubarek and his family made a mistake not leaving the country is telling when one learns the two sons are in jail and Mubarek is in the hospital not really wanting to leave. Mubarek, his wife and his two sons all under investigation for corruption and other allegations in which they could face the death penalty. As Richard stated, Mubarek is trying to stay in the hospital and not wanting to face time in jail. On the situation in Libya the rebels are frustrates with the West for not providing enough help in air strikes to help them battle Qadhafi forces. As Richard stated how all this will end could come to a battle in Israel. Empowering the Arab street they will seek justice with the Palestinians and as Richard stated the fighting could end in Jerusalem. So much unrest in the Middle East regions. One always prays for some peace to come for all the citizens.

      Excellent Reporting as Always Richard!

On another note the report by Mr.Costello about so many Air Traffic Controllers falling asleep in the job is extremely frightening considering they are handling life annd death situations with planeloads of passengers on hundreds of flights taking off and landing. Hearing about the Medevac plane with as patient in serious condition and the pilot unable to get an answer from the tower was inexusable. So many incidents in the last few weeks with controllers falling asleep. All the airports should have enough staff in the tower to work the overnight shifts. One hopes these incidents cease from happening. People need to be safe when flying in airplanes.

Nice to know the first plane landed at Sendai Airport in Japan since the devastating earthquake and tsunami.

So very tragic the mother who drover her minivan with her and her four children into the Hudson River. It was incredible one of the children survived after be able to get out of the car in the water and notified authorities of what had happened. So extremely sad and heartbreaking. One wonders if answers will ever be found out of this awful tragedy.

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to You and to All!

      Be Well Everyone!

Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard! Wonderful to see you in the New York Studio! Welcome Home and Enjoy Being Home! Excellent Reporting!

Take Extra Good Care Richard and Crew!

      Lisa

        Dear Mr. Williams,

I was quite surprised by Mr. Engel admitting that the Arab street is so thoroughly against Israel that a war is imminent in 3-5 years. This is the first time I have heard such an acknowledgment.

I was disappointed however that he he intimated the cause of this sentiment is the Palestinian conflict, and did not mention the virulent anti-semitism which exists in Muslim countries which has existed before the State of Israel was created and is stoked by "radical" and "conservative" Muslim clerics and is based in Islamic teachings. In other words your viewers might not clearly understand that the common hatred of the Arab street towards Israel isn't going to disappear no matter what Israel does.

Viewers might not realize how naive and dangerous it is to believe that concessions which threaten Israel's security will ever produce a stable peace for Palestinians or the region.

I hope that Richard Engel will be able to report more extensively about the details of this reality.

Brian: The FAA made the right decision in tossing out their administrator. I can't conceive the fact that some airports only have one air traffic controller on duty. A second incident has occurred in which an air traffic controller fell asleep. Does it take a nitwit to not undersand passenger safety? The FAA needs to take immediate steps to avoid more incidents of this nature, starting now!! I'll catch you on tonight's broadcast.
