Kate Snow writes: Personally, I’m ready to bid farewell to 2010. And I’m guessing I’m not alone on this New Year’s Eve. The year is ending painfully for many in the Midwest. Tornadoes have been reported today in Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois. There are deaths and widespread damage.
Across most of the country, of course, the focus is on celebrating this evening. We’ll spend some time on the broadcast tonight enjoying wonderful video of New Year celebrations from Sydney to Paris. And we have a revealing piece about security measures hidden in plain sight in New York City, as they prepare to drop the ball in Times Square.
But my favorite item tonight is a look at some of the smaller stories that struck a chord with you this year. If you’re a regular, you know that each Friday we run a segment highlighting someone who is “making a difference”. What’s incredible is the response we often receive after those stories air. And this year social media sites have only made it easier to spread the word about people in need. One story can literally prompt thousands of strangers to reach out, to offer time or money or simply a kind word.
As we head into 2011, it’s nice to remember the power we all have to impact others.

Thanks Kate and you and eveyone have a happy and safe NEW YEAR!!!!
Good Evening Kate, Happy New Year to You! A great broadcast this New Years Eve! Nice to see you filling in for Mr.Williams. Always Wonderful to See Richard on the broadcast!
First of all the report by Richard on the security efforts in New York which certainly are a major undertaking for this city. The security measures in Times Square especially tonight during the New Year's Eve celebrations is incredible and staggering with 17 miles of barricades, thousands of police and all kinds of hidden security measures to help monitor all areas. Hearing about the upgrades to security and safety for the underwater parts of the subways was amazing with steel casings, flood gates at both ends and protective sheets over the tunnels. The camera room with monitors all over the area of Times Square to pinpoint anything unusual is certainly incredible. Richard explaining all the cameras. helicopters, radiation detectors told of how much better New York City has become in safety and counterrorism. Keeping everyone safe and secure everyday!
Excellent Report as Always Richard!
Hearing the numbers of casualties in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq was extremely sad and told of how many brave men and women of the military made the extreme sacrifice. Ones thoughts and prayers go out to all the families. One hopes all those fighting the wars will be able to come home soon.
On a weather note some terrible winter storms hitting the MidWest with many tornados and blizzards. One hopes all the storms pass quickly.
The report by Mr.Fletcher from London told of how major cities overseas were celebrating New Years in a big way with much fireworks. One celebration seemed bigger than the next as one went from New Zealand to London. Much hope for a prosperous New Year.
Showing all the different "Making A Difference" segments and how viewers really helped was very special for the end of the year. So many kind people in the world sending donations and words of thanks. It was heartwarming to see. Although it was sad to hear of the doctor who ran the clinic on the island passing away. He truly did make a difference as did so many people in these pieces.
Always heartwarming pieces!
Thank You for the broadcast Kate! Happy New Year to You and Everyone At NBC! Peace to You and to All!
Be Well Everyone! Happy New Year Everyone!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard! Excellent Reporting As Always! Happy New Year Richard!
Take Extra Good Care Richard and Crew!

Well it's new year for you not for me yet. I had to say this. I got to hear the press conference of Govenor Christi of New Jerey. It was so sad to hear him blame his wife and kids for his trip and he took another low road by blaming the Jersey Mayor's for doing a poor job of clean up. One Jersey citizen made me laugh as they called the Govenor Chris Christi Mousetketeer as he refuse to do his job then blamed everyone else. Christi will soon drop another shocker when he raises property taxes and that might just do him in.
Kate: You did a fine job as a stand in anchor on the news last night. Yes. those people in parts of the Midwest are not off to a happy start for the new year, especially in Cincinnati, Arkansas. That event was a sad state of affairs. At least no one was killed or severely injured. The highlight of each Nightly News broadcast is Making a Difference. Heartwarming stories always make for good news, and many more will come. Happy New Year to you and yours!
I have a question, was it only me and my friends or did everyone see what looked like a ball of fire slowly going across the night sky right after the clock hit midnight on new years?? I am really interested to know what it was, so if anyone else has a clue please let me know!! Thanks
Shelley, there were many reported sightings on a ball of fire New Year's, but I do not have a clue either
what it was. Maybe Lester knows and it will be a story on this evening's Nightly News. Phyllis
