Reasons to be thankful tonight

Carl Quintanilla writes: There's turkey and stuffing in the Nightly newsroom tonight, thanks to our friends at the NBC Commissary upstairs. (Early reviews are good.) There are also plenty of televisions on which to watch football, if we're so inclined.

But more than that, there are reminders of reasons to be thankful -- and they come in the form of news stories.

Rehema Ellis leads our broadcast tonight with a piece on today's Thanksgiving celebrations around the country -- from the Macy's Parade in New York City to the myriad of ways Americans are volunteering and giving to those in need. Lester Holt brings us the latest in his series of inspiring stories about U.S. troops in Afghanistan during this holiday, as they continue to fight a critical but exhausting war.

The ongoing tensions in North and South Korea also continue to dominate headlines. Our Ian Williams brings us a first-hand look at the island that was shelled by North Korea this week, surveying the damage and talking to bewildered residents. We'll talk with Richard Engel about what comes next, what's behind the joint military exercises the U.S. will begin with South Korea next week, and how China is responding.

Finally, Thanksgiving wouldn't be Thanksgiving without the s-h-o-p-p-i-n-g. The National Retail Federation says 138 million Americans will shop this Black Friday weekend, and more retailers like Sears stayed open on Thanksgiving Day. Lee Cowan takes a look at Americans' seemingly insatiable appetite for shopping, and how that may indicate that their fears about the economy (or at least their pocketbooks) may be on the wane.

Now, that would be something for which to be truly thankful.

Wherever you are this Thanksgiving night -- at home with friends, with family, at work with co-workers (who sometimes feel like family), we wish you a wonderful holiday, and hope you'll join us tonight.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL THE BLOGGERS, BRIAN AND STAFF AT NBC

Yes a day to be thankfull for so much and let's hope we learn to grown forward not backward as we're going.

Obama pardoned Apple and Cider as they danced their way to freedom. One might have hoped Tom DeLay could have done the same and Obama could have pardon him too.

We should be grateful that Obama is President and not Sarah Palin since Sarah thinks North Korea is a US allie.

As for us folks here in California we hit the Mother load as we had a CLEARN SWEEP OF WINNING DEMOCRATS CANDIDATES. All have gotten right to work even before being sworn in office. History will repeat itself as it did during the Great Depression as States that worked with FDR's plan recovered quicker then those who fought him/even as a group tried twice to assassinate him. New York will also recover quickly. Many officials are to busy trying to make sure Obama/USA fail and not helping the citizens of their State. But the voters spoke on election day and believed what the candidates say and gave them their vote. As quick as you can say Jackie the promises were broken. Trust is hard to get and even harder to get back after lost.

As said during the Presidential election each President is tested. I remember JFK and yes GW, what a difference. Now Obama is testing with the conflict between North and South Korea. Thank goodness Sarah Palin isn't President she calls North Korea a US Allie and really just learned there is a North/South Korea. What was sad is when Sarah's son was shipped off to Iraq and she had no idea where it was. I'm sure Obama will look to peace as a way to settle the Korean conflict because it's so easy to figure out North Korea after all these years. Much of it is to draw attention and set down with deals. The North Korean President is setting the stage for his son to take over.

Who would have thought Justice would come to The Hammer aka Tom DeLay. Now he might have to give the Feds a bigger fish to get a lighter sentence. Yes the Hammer knows all the corruption done my many setting Law Makers. Will the new House Speaker help a friend or will Gov. Perry make history by quickly pardoning a convicted felon. Remember Bush rushed in to save Scooter Libby. If McCain/Palin had won the elected DeLay would be a free man and back in Government to continue his system of corruption. Maybe Fox News can create a spin to make DeLay look innocent. Boehner and McConnell have to quickly set up a Bill that would allow future and current Republican Law Makers/Banks under investigation to get a pass and forgive their criminal acts. No problem for Rep. Issa to continue the fake investigatiions in the Obama Administration unless DeLay spills the crimes committed by Rep. Issa and Lewis of California.

All the packages went out to the troops and today I'll be serving at a senior center

Have a great day all

Good Evening Mr.Quintanilla, Happy Thanksgiving to You and Everyone at NBC!! Another fine report this evening. Always wonderful to see Richard on the broadcast!

Now on to the broadcast. First of all the report by Rehema Ellis about how the nation is giving thanks and counting blessings. Many volunteers helped serve the hungry today and others ran in races, played football games for charity to give back to others and give thanks.

The report by Mr.Holt from Camp Eggers showed how the US Troops spent Thanksgiving with holiday meals and talking to loved ones via skype which keeps families connected. Also, much mail collected in great volume from families to their loved ones serving our country. It was wonderful to hear how care packages sent from the United States are being brought to orphanages. Yet. many US Troops are going about their duties in this war zone while keeping us safe at home. God Bless All Our US Troops! We Are Truly Thankful for Your Service to Our Country!

The report by Ian Williams from the island near South Korea that was attacked by North Korea showed some massive destruction all over the island. It was so tragic to see the village totally destroyed by the attacks. So sad to heatr from residents like the fisherman whose livelihood has been destroyed and is just trying to collect belongings. Lives have beed shattered and the coming of military is no much comfort to the residents.

Richard's report from Incheon, South Korea told of how North Korea will react to the coming of US Warships that will cruise the waters. As Richard stated it is "gunboat" diplomacy and the US Warships along the waters could make a different situation. It is a tense time in the region and one hopes it will remain peaceful.

Excellent Reporting Richard As Always! Please Stay Extra,Extra Safe Always!

The piece by Mr.Tibbles from Chicago about the five members of an extended family serving in the Iowa National Guard was truly moving. So very hard for the mother seeing all of her children serving in the military, but it makes her extremely proud. The support and unity within the family is wonderful! God Bless the whole family! May They All Remain Safe!

The piece by Mr.Lewis about people being naturally generous was very nice. People do love to give to others with helping people all year. Alot of kind people in the world.

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Quintanilla. Happy Thanksgiving to You and Everyone at NBC! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to all the "regulars"

    Happy Thanksgiving to All!

Stay Extra,Extra Safe Richard! Excellent Reporting! Happy Thanksgiving to You!

Take Extra Good Care Richard and Crew!

    XOXO

Happy Thanksgiving to the entire Nightly News staff! Although, there many ominous events going on in the world today, this is the day for reflection and hope for a better tomorrow, and let's not forget our troops overseas who risk their lives daily, and to the correspondents who are constantly in the danger zone. Hats off to Lester Holt in Afghanistan and Richard Engle, both overseas in areas most of us would never wish to be in. They are the best! Have a great holiday, all of you!

Brian, Hope you and your family had a terrific Thanksgiving and are relaxed, but I have a question

for you? On the anniversary of JFK's assassination in 1963, Isn't 1963, by virtue of its being a

year in the Christian calendar, an ideological date? I will backtrack: On Nov. 22, 1963 JFK was killed.

But what about about that year 1963. In the Jewish calendar it was 3724 or whatever, and in

the Chinese calendar it's something else. The date of the birth of Christ was decided by an

ill-educated monk. Christ was born actually in 4 B.C. Repeating myself, Isn't 1963, by virtue of its

being a year in the Christian calendar, an ideological date."?
quoting from Great Books David Denby

          Happy Thanksgiving!

Brian: I'm sure you're aware of those inflammatory blogs that were posted recently. I wrote several remarks concerning those out of line statements. I now have noticed that those remarks have been deleted from the site. Hopefully, that will be a permanent situation. I was infuriated when I read these comments and asked MSNBC.com why they were published. Looks like they got the message. I'm not trying to spoil your're time off, I'm just telling you I don't appreciate ad hominum attacks against upstanding citizens. You are still the best evening news anchor around, and I wanted to take up for you. Hopefully this site will banish innapropriate comments from now on. Have a great holiday with your family, and I'll catch you on the broadcast next week. I am a devoted viewer!
