I knew it might be trouble the moment I read on Gawker over the weekend that House Speaker-designate John Boehner had "bypassed" airport security at National in Washington. He walked past the TSA checkpoint with his armed security detail. It's not that anyone wishes he'd be as hassled like the rest of us (okay, some people probably do). The problem is: He's a lawmaker. TSA/Department of Homeland Security issues come before him. He should know, firsthand (you'll pardon the pun) what the rest of us go through at the airport. There are layers of Government types, from the President on down, who are exempt from airport screening. They say they understand what the American flying public is going through, but they don't. They can't. My guess is, this issue will start to pick up some traction.
We hope you can join us tonight.
if the Government really cared about the Public's concerns regarding this issue, they would subject THEMSELVES to it! Until they do that, I say they really DON'T KNOW and DON'T CARE! See you tonight Brian!
Brian
A terrific broadcast, as always. In my opinion, a show of strength from South Korea, and hopefully
North Korea would back off I am not a political genius like Secretary of State Hilliary Clinton,
but that works in personal relationships.
Have a nice evening!!!
Phyllis
I'm with Robert. The government will not know what's it's like untill they have to go through it. Also, why are the muslims not subject to the scanning, patting or groping? They are the ones who could conceal any type of weapons, bombs and dynamite better than anyone else. I will bet they were not part of the random poll that was taken by Americans concerning this issue. I think anyone wanting to board a plane should have to go through the same thing; no exceptions. I think there will be a lot more people riding the trains. Joyce
Brian,
I'm with Robert. I think the government will never know how it feels until they go through it. Also, I don't understand why the Muslims are not subect to the scanning, patting or groping. They would be able to conceal weapons, bombs and dynamite better than most other Americans. I don't think anyone who wants to fly should be exempt. I can see a lot of people using trains. Thanks, Joyce
The TSA has got it all wrong their approach is a reactive bandage approach, Lets take a lesson from Israel,
their program is interactive , and ask the question approach. Here is why
In 1990 ,after the Lockable incident, American Airlines ,under Robert Crandall implemented an international security program at NY JFK, I am proud to say that i was part of this small group of specialty trained individuals, Our main function was to screen and evaluate all passengers within a very short time frame by means of observation and by asking a few very basic questions at check in. Questions that the Israel Gov had already implemented . plus a lot more. Many of us were hired for our language skills so that communication would not be a problem and it put many of the foreign passengers at ease.
The program worked. I know this from my own experience, I will not get into detail as to how i know.
Anyway It must have really teed some people off because it was stopped very abruptly. By todays standards and what we are doing now the program was simple, very one on one, and not intrusive and as insulting as now. The TSA could use some basic training from this 1990 program and just get rid of all their high tech junk , leave the passengers Junk alone also, and just ask the right questions.
Maybe then Ill get back on an airplane again, i will be profiled every time because I cant raise my left arm above my waste, NO THANK YOU
Also how many times does the average traveler go through the security on a domestic flight from your local airport to your final destination. I'm going to guess and say 3. At departure, at the major hub and your local flight to your final destination. Please there is a better way then to subject our children the handicapped and medically ill through this
Thank you for letting me blow steam without slowing the travel time for my fellow passengers,
I'm taking the car for my 300 mile trip
Uwe
It's back to profiling as it's not who you are it's what you look like. Now after reading bloggers concerns about why Muslims are checked we must remember the shoe bomber was a white American. Do we fear others and who are those others. I remember when blacks and anyone with brown skin where searched because of the fear of what people looked like. My son drove from Newark airport and was stopped every 20 miles until I had to stop it. Americans see conduct to others is fine but don't dare do the same to the chosen ones. Boehner is no better then every citizen and should be checked. We're beginning to bring back discrimination while using the TSA. Few bother to remember Rep. DeMint blocked the appointment of the TSA as we watched the underwear bomber on the plane. Hundreds of Obama's appointees have been blocked by the GOP with no one complaining. Americans watched our country condone Torture to innocent men/women/children but don't dare do that to an American.
MEARS cleared up the issue that more then 67 million homeowners actually own their homes because the Deeds were lost in the swaps. We saw how homeowners/servers/lenders/trustees played with mortage payments. In the rush to steal the Deeds were lost or written off in bankrupcy/closing companies. Now it list homeowners/servers as the Server just keeps the money. The shock will be when a homeowner pays his last payment the Bank wont be able to give him the Deed.
The so call promise by Republican/Tea Party candidates/law makers is now over as Senator Kyle of Arizona just got 200 million in pork for Arizona. As other States suffer it seems the chosen Law Makers will get pork for their States. A person is as good as their word and this proves many Law Makers can't be trusted. The voters made they decision on election day and wanted the Republican/Tea Party to take control of the Government and there by destroy Obama and the country. We now see what we wanted and it's our worse nightmare. I expect Americans will demand Obama do something.
Rep. Cantor's district is one of the wealthest area's in Virginia. The voters liked what Rep. Cantor was doing and re elected him back in office. What this area is experiencing now is history in the making. This district has to have Charity for Thanksgiving Dinner as people can't afford it. Christmas will be another first for this once wealthy area but it seems they don't mine the hardship because Rep. Cantor isn't dealing with their concerns right now. As Law Makers look to help the Banks/corporations and enjoy the Thankgiving/Christmas Holidays only to see more people will suffer. Some working Americans complained about helping the unemployed, now the same people fine themselves unemployed and asking for help.
We downsized our base in South Korea to take the troops to Iraq. North Korea has been looking for attention and now they have it. Obama would be wise not to play in their hands. As for the GOP they just want to bomb North Korea or anyone to bring back War profiteering. This is a United Nations problem not a US problem. Obama will be tested on his leadership as Bush was tested on his. What we should thank God for is McCain/Palin aren't in office.
Brian it was interesting how the US Media was all over Charles's comment about Carmilla becoming Queen. BBC showed the Queen explaining years ago that Carmiller would never be Queen and even Charles saying he didn't want to be King. Wills was always the one in line to the throne and yes if and when he does become King, Kate will be Queen. I was glad Wills/Kate will have their wedding as a holiday. At lease the Brits know how little the US knows about England. Few remember when the US was founded the leaders came from England, but that's a history few read about.
Let's see if the Congress and correct the error made by the 5 Supreme Court Justices. Many educated in the US Constitution see the violation the Justices did and even Justice Scalia is getting worried. After learning that two Supreme Court Justices lied under oath and 5 Justices violated the Constitution, trust is being lost in the highest court of the land.
see you same time same place
hola, jackie, another very interesting post by dexter filkins and carlotta gall in the nyt. best, anna martina
The TSA has got it all wrong they are using a reactive bandage approach and getting everyone angry,
Then making acceptable deviations to gov officials and anyone else who screams loud enough.
So lets take some proven lessons from the past, The year is 1990 The Lockable act over England.
IN 1990 after that tragic ordeal American Airline under the direction of Robert Crandall Set up an Internal International security program modeled after the Israel Gov with some upgrades and modifications. The nation of Israel had at that time a very unintuitive and sophisticated screening technuque.
I am proud to say I was part of that program , we were a small group specifically trained in certain aspects of what the TSA is trying to accomplish now. One of the key elements to this was, most of us spoke a second language so we could communicate with the person or persons and even large groups traveling, in their native language. This put them at ease and made things a lot smoother and easier.
The program worked , trust me on this I know. The program was so good that it was stopped very abruptly and quietly. Someone apparently was upset. That type of intrusion at that time is absolutely nothing compared to what is about to happen tomorrow
The TSA needs to get back to some old time basics of the 1990s take some hard lessons from Israel and contact American Airlines and just ask them how its done.
So my suggestion is get rid of all your High tech JUNK , don't play with our JUNK and just learn to ask the right Questions, things will go a lot better
I will not fly while the current program is in effect because i cant raise my left arm above my waist ,thus I will be profiled every time. NO THANKS
We should not be subject to this type of search, especially, children infants dirty diapers, men and women with medical conditions , so just ask the right Question
The other issue is how many times do you go through the TSA system during you trip. Domestically I would say 3 times. Once when you leave your local airport to a major hub, the second at the major hub, and if you take another connection after that you get it again. Thats on a domestic flight.
Please learn to ask the right Questions and give us back our dignity for an already overpriced nickel and dime glorified buss ride in the air.
Thank you
Uwe
It works, I know Ive done it with results
The key to the program was screening with one on one short and direct questions as a family
Change of name but same result huh Kola? Get LOST LOSER!
Not to get off subject bit I found a way for you to devote more time to the news - transfer the entire TODAY program to the entertainment division.
North Korea is shoot at South K. We have 30,000 US troops over there. What is the big story on Today? Without any facts they start to speculate on who will design the wedding dress of the princess-to-be as part of the opening story. This is news? Gossip and entertainment. There is no news in any of the story. Rumor has it the Queen likes/doesn't like... Prince William wanted... Who should be included on the guest list? The Royal Couple wants....
The scoop of the day is the name of a dress maker?
How is this, and why is this considered news?
Sesame Street was more informative than Today was today.
I don't mind if Boehner doesn't go through TSA pat downs as long as he doesn't conspire with Self Appointed Gods & Communist to intentionally collapse our economy and cause chaos. Now that's change I can believe in.
Besides Obama and his crew are only putting people through this to get the TSA unionized. Never let a crisis go to waste.
there are chinese communists in that country who really do believe that they are gods. i read an article in the nyt about the dedication of a tao temple to 'the yellow emperor', so, he was human and became deified and worshiped by the people. the mormons believe that they will one day all be gods. now when a chinese communist gets into kahoots with a twisted hindu brahmin that is too big for his britches, as well, all hell breaks loose. if i didn't know kola and chelle, poor schizophrenic thing, was jamaican, i would think she was a chinese she-devil like wendy deng, the wife of rupert murdoch. murdoch is a small potato, he wastes his energy on world dominion. those chinese communists and twisted hindu brahmin want dominion of the sky, they have old star maps of the constellations as seen from another planet, not our earth. so do the arabs and the turks. we're the real aliens. the greeks have an antikythera device that shows the movements of the planets of a solar system not our own. murdoch wants to mess with the history of the world, but that time machine experiment he has invested billions in will never work. and the wormholes and portals do not like his conniving ways. they steer way clear of him, he is always left so frustrated and angry, poor thing. he is not about life, he is about death. life cannot be micro-managed, it must be left to find it's organic and natural fabonacci number way. it wouldn't surprise me if he dropped the genetically targeted stem cell crap on carl sagan. so, he's a murderer as well. oh my. it's a good thing i was early retired and only have enough energy to take care of my little trailer and my very small garden, a small place which may have a bit of the perfect light of that beautiful temple in china that the british destroyed, luminosity, the stuff stars are made of. i do have the blue spot on my back. best, anna martina
Dave, what on earth did you mean by that?
Brian-
Great coverage of the Korea situation tonight. Expect there will be more news tomorrow. Considering today's events and the recent revelation of N. Korea's new uranium enrichment facility, the question arises: Will S. Korea and Japan conclude they too need nuclear weapons?
Before tomorrow's crush, I want to take this opportunity to wish a Happy, Happy Thanksgiving to:
Brian and his family
The Nightly News staff and their families
The "Blog Family" and all their loved ones.
Have a good one all and take care-
Celine
Brian -
Your segment on Speaker-designate Boehner on tonight's broadcast represents the essence of all that is wrong with America. To me, you are a 21st-Century version of the 20th-Century Soviet Agitprop artist in an Armani suit. So... you expected a problem or, as you put it, 'trouble', when you read on Gawker that House Speaker-designate John Boehner had by-passed TSA security. DUH? AS IF John Beohner was a potential terrorist suspect or deserved the very same treatment as every other unknown traveler in the human throng. What an absurd assumption! No, what an absurdly stupid politically-correct statement! Are you suggesting that Speaker-designate Boehner is not a trustworthy citizen-representative and might be carrying a bomb unbeknown to his fellow passengers? Do you think you have keener insight into Mr. Boehner's character than the people who elected him? Do you think it's unfair that Brian Williams has to subject himself to this charade of protection, but House Speaker-designate Boehner doesn't? Or is it just your attempt to undermine the credibility of a Conservative? Well then, how about Nancy Pelosi? Are you equally disturbed that Ms. Pelosi by-passes TSA security? Oh, that's right... she uses a military 757 paid for on the backs of all of us taxpayers. Did you EVER express your angst over the exorbitant costs Ms. Pelosi racked up every weekend flying in a mostly empty military plane to and from Califirnia? How about Barak Obama? Are you disturbed that President Obama by-passes TSA security? Oh, that's right... he flies around willy nilly on Air Force One for a night out on the town with Ms. Obama at taxpayers expense or a photo-op flight low over NYC. But, these incidents are certainly not newsworthy, are they John? But, John Boehner, a known political entity with high-level national clearance by-passing security must be the height of arrogance to the likes of you. Your sincerely innocent, professionally-furrowed-brow-smug-faced-silver-tongued prompter reading efforts belie your thinly-disguised contempt for American Conservatives. That's why the huge majority of Americans are fleeing in droves your Old Media format and that's why I only tune in once or twice a year (just to confirm my assumptions - all the while thinking there's still hope for your type, but alas). The average American may not be as sophisticated as you might imagine yourself to be. But, we've been wise to your Leftist agitprop tactics far longer than you would ever know. And you continue to believe in your agenda and you still believe you have some shred of effect at manipulating public opinion. You just don't get it. Americans love real red-blooded Americans like John Boehner, personal flaws and all, despite your opinion... and regardless of your lame attempts to influence us. That's it for tonight. See you again maybe next February.
Beaker, if you read Brian's comments, you will see that this is not his point. He was quite clear in stating that when those who are exempt from the requirements claim that they feel our pain or even that they understand, it is not likely. Perhaps "the essence of all that is wrong with America" is people shooting from the hip and reacting without first determining what the other person is saying. It makes reasonable communication very difficult, and without communication, it is extremely difficult for a system to work.
First of all, I do not have a problem with the use of body scanners as long as the TSA honors its commitment to the public to use the stick drawing settings. I believe that is what they told us when they first spoke of installing them at airports. I do however have a problem with them conducting enhanced pat-downs at airports where people do not have the option of going through a body scanner because it does not exist at that airport.
One question that I have not seen asked by the media is how many people are being subjected to pat-downs after going through the body scanners and why? Are they seeing something on the scan or is it a random pat-down? And what exactly is the criteria for a random pat-down anyway? Do they keep track of the pat-downs at each airport? Has anyone considered what the demographics of these pat-downs are- male vs. female, age groups, ethnic groups, or religious identifiers [someone wearing a cross, star of David, religious clothing].
According to the TSA they are going to reduce the number of random pat-downs. They attempt to comfort the American flying public by stating it is 'only' 3% of enhanced pat-downs since November 1st- assuming approximately 1.5 million fly domestically each day- by my estimates that is approximately 45,000 passengers daily. In the past 23 days that would total 1,035,000 million men, women and children [over the age of 12] that have been subjected to a search of their bodies by TSA personnel. If our nation's police forces attempted such acts there would be wide spread outcry and a federal government intervention. All this is done in the name of protecting us from terrorists.
Here is another viewpoint- the terrorists are no doubt laughing at the thought of 45,000 Americans being subjected to such humiliating experiences on a daily basis. I have to question how such invasive body searches can be warranted. Surely there is another way to protect the public. I would rather pay to be subjected to a background check and have that on file with the TSA.
One last thought Brian- I am appalled at the thought of a TSA official touching my body in areas that should only be touched by my husband or a personally chosen health care provider. Apparently I have a 3% chance of being chosen for this experience to 'increase public safety'. I have less anxiety at the thought of being struck down by a terrorist than being touched by a TSA official. I believe that the TSA's policies are just the latest attempt at terrorism in our nation- only our own government is the delivery medium.
Best regards- love your nightly broadcast!
Brian: All lawmakers should be subjected to the TSA methods being employed at all airports. Your'e right when you say they have no idea what the general public is going through, especially during this holiday season. It's time for these lawmakers to be patted down and scanned. Just another example of federal hypocracy. I'll catch you on tonight's broadcast.
Brian: Lawmakers should have body scans and patdowns jusy like the rest of those irate passengers who are complaining against the TSA methology. What makes them so special? A new procedure should go into effect to mandate that the Washington elite are no different than the average American. Let them find out what it's like to endure these methods. I'll catch you on tonight's broadcast.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL THE BLOGGERS, BRIAN AND NBC STAFF
Obama pardoned Apple and Cider Turkeys and even give a shout out to the hotel and Dancing with the Stars. Who know Turkey's had to dance to win freedom.
Chuck Todd was so zellist in reporting the win by all the Repubicans and Tea Party he forgot the biggest story. CALIFORNIA DEMS HAD A CLEAN SWIPE AND WON ALL THE CANDIDATES ON THE BALLOT. What's good about American history is how it seems to always repeat itself if we didn't learn the first time. FDR had the same problems and even two assassination attempts while trying to recover the nation from the Great Depression. As history recorded the States that join in the FDR plan recovered quickly as other States took much longer. Looks like California will be one of the first to recover from this Recession and New York isn't far behind. As we're seen the promises by candidates during the election quickly dropped after they won, the people will have again stand up. I'm just glad Californians didn't get fooled again and can now build on the Economy.
Obama is now being tested by the North Korea attack. What's interesting is how Sarah Palin didn't know there was a North /South Korea and even in an interview called North Korea our allies. Just think if she made that kind of mistake as President and bomb the wrong country. What is interesting is North Korea is said to have built an Atomic bomb which will be interesting what the US has to say about that. Few choose to remember the United States no only had an Atomic bomb but was the only country in history to use the Atomic Bomb on citizens. North Korean leader is looking for attention and testing this Administration. Little was done during the pass 8 years and now North Korea is grooming a new leader.
Elizabeth Warren is one tuff/smart lady and gives Obama the heads up to the corrupt Bills done by Law Makers to protect the Banks/Corporations. If anyone is having problems with their home and the Bank one piece of advice is ask for the Deed to be shown and you just might own your home because Banks messed up and lost most of the Deeds while playing Monopoly game. Most of the States Attorney Generals working for their citizens know this other State Attorney Generals are busy looking to run for higher office and don't seem to have time to deal with the current fraud/closures of homes.
see you same time same place

I also would like to wish you and yours a Healthy and Happy Thanksgiving and also same wishes to the “blogging family” as well !
I Thought tonight would be your last broadcast before the holiday, but as the saying goes “don’t assume” . . . and I’m sure we all know how the rest of that saying goes . . .
Look forward to seeing and hearing from everyone on Monday.
hola, lester,
i hope that a solution can be found for the various tribes in afghanistan that have been displaced/killed during ethnic cleansing. it was interesting to read that tibet may suffer similar strife when the dalai lama hangs up his yellow hat. i hope the kuishi tribe receives warmer shelter from the aid organizations and the government in kabul. and warmer clothes, winter camping sleeping bags and basic over the counter medicines for cold and flu for the children, vicks on the chest with a warm cloth for congestion and coughs works wonders. i suppose some kind of small heating system would be too much to hope for. even a small stove with a pot of water on top of it would help alot for the warm vapor with a few dollops of vicks in it for healthy respiratory tracts. knit hats, scarves and gloves for the kids!
happy thanksgiving to everyone at nightly news and the blog regulars. that thanksgiving meal is alot of work but it is so worth it. it is good to see family and enjoy a sense of togetherness during the holidays. happy thanksgiving to all of our troops! they are 'family', as sgt. giunta emphasized the closeness of a company in the field. i am making two pumpkin pies and my dad's famous ham recipe, a butt ham, deboned and sectioned, brushed all over with mustard, sprinkled with cloves and refrigerated overnight, baked on thanksgiving day and basted with pineapple juice with brown sugar for glazing with a pineapple juice, pineapple bits and raisin sweet sauce. yum:-)
i hope something defuses the situation between north and south korea. that is crazy.
take very good care, best, anna martina
Lester, I have a question for you also. What is the flight time from Afghanistan to New York? Phyllis
I just read that a man was arrested for an Obama death threat.
