When the president fastened the cornflower blue ribbon around the neck of Staff Sgt. Sal Giunta today at the White House, Giunta became the 87th living Recipient of the Medal of Honor. The recipient nearest to him in age is more than twice his age. The last seven medals have gone to men who were killed in battle. This was a genuinely great moment for the Armed Forces. As I said to Col. Jack Jacobs (a Recipient himself), "If all Americans were like this guy, we'd have no problems as a country." Jack said he had last heard that sentiment expressed...by his own wife, a retired Army Captain herself. For those with any interest in the profound story of this young man, please read Jack's story on the subject. We will have more on his story on tonight's broadcast.
We hope you can join us tonight

God Bless Sgt. Giunta, and all of his comrades! What a remarkable young man. And thanks to you Brian for covering this inspiring story!
If all our leaders "were like this guy"
If all our so called watch dog media "were like this guy"
If all our Manhattanstan terrorist bankers "were like this guy"
If...........
Brian,
I’m in agreement with Obama 101% when he said he had to go off script for a second just to say he likes the guy, Sal Giunta, he comes across as being 101% humble and sincere, something you don’t see very often these days. You can tell his attitude comes straight from the heart!
And now on to a certain segment of the broadcast I just knew you would mention, all I have to say is finally! I downloaded "Come Together" from Itunes this morning and copied it to my BB (so I'm covered on two separate devices) and I've been listening to "Come Together", the only song I like by The Beatles, all afternoon. I feel like I did when I was a teenager and bought a new record and played it over and over and over again, much to the delight of my parents I’m sure.
Just have to mention regarding the three stories on the “Royal Engagement”, you presented this evening, I can understand the standpoint of coverage when taking into account that Diana met such a tragic end, but was quite surprised to see the two lead stories on a national newscast was about the engagement, kind of made wonder if Access Hollywood started an hour early this evening
I am ashamed of NBC for not putting this the front story on there program and giving more time to it. I could not care less about what is happening in England and there royal wedding. That is for the Entertainment News, not the evening news in the good old USA that this soldier is fighting for. I think this is much more important news the some wedding. We have soldiers fighting for our country and dying. Little is said about it other then the bad news. This was uplifting news for all our fighting new and women. Plus all of our true American citizens and future soldiers.
You couldn't have said it better! SHAME on NBC!
I COULDN'T AGREE MORE..A MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT TAKES BACKSEAT TO AN ENGAGEMENT? My 19 year old is US 101 Airborne deployed July 1 and has been in the middle of the fight and this is what "mainstream media" led with!! Poor judgment on a network that has the best reporter, Richard Engel, covering the war as well as the issues that our armed forces confront daily back home...
Brian -- I have always wondered something (as a longtime NN viewer). Does your sister channel, MSNBC, make it easier or more difficult to do your job as a journalist, seeing as some of their commentators are unabashadly liberal? No disrespect to your colleagues, but their opinions are informed precisely by the (expensive) quality journalism your staff produces. Keep up the good work. James
How is this not the lead story on the news? Royal engagement???? Since when did NBC Nightly News become Entertainment Tonight? I actually got a little mad tonight when this happened. Enough to come here and complain.
As with Mr. Wirth, I too was disappointed in the wedding being the lead story, enough to come here and complain. They may be a cute couple, but OUR Staff Sgt. Sal Giunte receiving the Medal of Honor is much more important and interesting.
Brian,
I have to agree how isn't this story about the Medal of Honor not the lead story over the royal engagement. I mean don't get me wrong, i'm happy for them but honestly how does that trump once in a life event. Not since Vietnam has someone still alive received the Medial of Honor. In the nations history it's only happened 87 other times.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, Another fine broadcast this evening as always. So very moving to see Stafg Sergeant Sal Giunta receive the Medal of Honor from President Obama at the White House. Staff Sgt. Giunta is so very deserving of the honor because of his heroic efforts in saving his fellow soldiers in a fierce battle in the Korengal Valley in Afghanistan. He is so very humble in his words abd that he is receiving the medal in honor of all the unsung heroes of Iraq and Afghanistan. Truly a very special man along with being a brave and dedicated soldier. It was very nice to hear President Obama state he "likes the guy ". We should honor and remember all our brave soldiers. God Bless All Our Brave Soldiers!
The report by Mr.Maceda about the annoucement of the engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton certainly was wonderful news. Hearing how Prince William carried around the beautiful engagement ring which was worn by his mother Princess Diana and then how he proposed in Kenya was very special. She will make a beautuful princess and they are a great couple.
The engagement ring worn by Princess Diana at her engagement to Prince Charles and now worn by Kate Middleton makes this event truly meaningful for the couple. Learning how he cooked fancy dinners for Kate then ending up wrecking them is some way so she would have to take control was humorous. Being friends for quite some time before getting married was the right thing to do. As their friendship grew better over the years. They make a wonderful couple.
The piece b Andrea Mitchell about the engagement and how people arte always fascinated by the Royals showed that all the lavish palaces, romance pedigree and of course hats bring about fairy tales. Seeing the footage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana on their wedding day brings back great memories of a beautiful event. This wedding will definitely be a wonderful event!
Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to You and to All!
Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard!
Take Extra Good Care Richard and Crew!
XOXO
Lisa
Mr. Williams
I am disgusted with the fact that Prince Williams engagement is more of a story then a real deal american hero like SSGT Giunta. 10 minutes into the news broadcast you guys get around to airing the story of a solider that at the age of 22 risked his life for another in combat and lived to tell the story. SSGT Giunta and the familys of the fallen soliders from that day certainly deserve better than that. The nations highest military honor and its awarding certainly should have been the top story. The troops are still fighting everyday for the freedoms we enjoy daily. Poor choice on your part!!!!
I'm confused.
For years women have been saying they can do for themselves and not need men to open doors or expect the man to always pick up the tab on dates, etc.
Starting with TODAY the story starts with MILLIONS OF HEARTS AROUND THE WORLD ARE BREAKING and continues with the lead tonight.
What is the reality - women who are working hard to be taken seriously or are they just little girls playing working woman until their prince comes along?
Hi Brian
It's so sad to read the comments of how up set people are about Sgt. Giunta award today. If anyone listen to him they would know it's not about him it's about a team and his two dead follow soldiers. No soldier can take honor for himself when it was a team effort. But most Americans have no idea what hell our soldiers have been through and even when told they don't listen. Sal will do as all our heros do, and that's him job with honor. I know he will visit the sights of his fellow soldiers that seem to be lost in all this my many people and the guys will get together with his fellow brothers.
I know Diana must be happy and Edward/Wallis too. We watched Wills grow into a handsome young man. Charles did a great job. I remember Diana's ring and how shy she was when she met the press. Kate hangs on to Wills and he is so supportive. Diana was picked to marry Charles and Diana wanted her sons to marry for love. She got her wish. I think Kate and Wills if they have a daughter her name will be Diana. Just think a royal princess who is a commoner it's history making. The US had Chelsea who dated her current husband for a long time and now Kate and Wills. It's something young people might want to look at as it's always best to marry your best friend who you've grown to know each other. Queen Elizabeth looked so happy when they showed her on BBC. She is acted in the place of Diana with raising the boys. It seems Kate and Queen Elizabeth get along really well which most make Wills happy. Edward had to choose Wallis Simpson his love or the Throne, both must be smiling at how the Royal Policies have changed.
It seems the Banks are making a settle deal with 50 States AG's for the illegal/fraud they have committed over the 9 years. Homeowners in Florida didn't even have Judges hearing their cases as the foreclosures were as many as 25,000 per hour. Next the Feds will have to make a settlement with Banks for the corrupt/fraud. I'm glad President Obama made laws to protect the homeowners from future fraud. Now many current law makers want to give Banks a pass for their corruption/fraud/and fines, leaving the citizens left holding the bag. If enough people write their law makers it could really help. Here in California Moon Beam is already on the case to protect homeowners out here.
Brian, A typically good broadcast. Kate is a lovely young woman and I wish the happy couple the best.
I really like the solider too, a hero and so humble. I did not recognize former VP Cheney at first; I
certainly hope his health improves. Phyllis
I don't know what to say about this last post. I noticed that your second paragraph was larger then about the one and few Medal of Honor winners. I have been proud to have many friends as heros including my father. He was in that war no one cared about Vietnam. I don't want to see these modern day heros pushed aside like those back then.
So we are not trying to say Sgt. Giunta is more then human or anything of that nature. But he is one of the heros that nobody talks about. He is one, just because you don't think he should be honored in the way he should. I understand he was doing his job. All of our heros say that and its the truth. Thats all they were doing for our country. So just remember as you sleep soundly tonight in your bed young Americans lives made that possible.
In my opinion, Jane Fonda demoralized our soldiers in this war.
hola, david, on your first post, about 'more important the some wedding'. an interesting sentence to the brits, i'm sure, because it recalls the 'battle of the somme; wwi, july 1 to nov 18, 1916' in which 58,000 british soldiers lost their lives, one third of them killed on the first day of the battle, a one-day record to this day. horrible. so, back to the fighting men. i didn't pull up the engagement videos, since i only catch the nightly news on my computer, i don't have cable since 9/11. if i was watching tonight's broadcast on t.v., i would have shared your sentiment. methinks poor, inconsiderate timing on the part of the royal family, tsk, tsk. and i'm glad you value your father's service in vietnam. sierra vista has it's fair share of vietnam vets and we know when they're out and about. they can smell a rat 50 yards away. best, anna martina
America sends men and woman to war to protect our freedoms and the Nightly News decides to feature a potential royal wedding as last evenings top story instead of honoring America's Medal of Honor recipient. The order of the reported news worthy items was in very poor taste. I can understand the royal wedding being the top story for Entertainment Tonight, but NOT the NBC Evening News given there was a much more regal event that occured in our own nation.
Not to detract from any Medal of Honor recipient, but instead of gushing about how brave and selfless these men and women are (and they are, no question), people should be raging against the gutless politicians and media types who falsely cheered us into the fiascos that are the Iraq and Afghanistan wars (and who seem to be pushing for an invasion or bombing of Iran, Yemen and Syria, as well). So much blood and treasure has been needlessly lost in these two conflagrations, which our "leaders" have absolutely no skin in (chicken hawks), and they wrap themselves in the flag and their religion (the last refuge of scoundrels) to pontificate about the righteousness of their "cause". The only winners in this atrocious exercise are the opportunistic and unethical members of the "military industrial complex" that former president Dwight Eisenhower warned us about when he left office. The sooner we stop glorifying the excesses of war and start working toward the peaceful resolution of conflicts, the better off we'll all be as a civilization.
I am very happy to see that I am not the only one who was disappointed in the lead-in story of the Royal Engagement. Now I like a good romance, just like the best of them, but that is more important than Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta receiving our country's highest award, "The Medla of Honor?" This young man ran INTO enemy fire trying to save his fellow soldiers, and defending our country. Where are our priorities?? No wonder our country is in the shape that it is. I hurriedly switched to CBS, and they were no better as their lead-in was also about the Brits!! I am just at a loss on this one. Shame on you!! Shame on us!! Putting all politics aside and our biased opinions, which story is more important, someone giving everything he had and risking his life for his friends and country, or someone getting engaged, who doesn't live here?
Brian: It's true! If more people were as heroic and brave as the sargeant, this would be a better country, politically speaking. Some of the so called leaders in Congress who are leading our country astray should learn a lesson or two from not only our newest hero, and all of kthe other Medal Of Honor winners but also from the members of all military forces who risk their lives for us every day. I"ll bet some of those congressmen up on Capital Hill would't be as brave in combat as was Sgt. Sal Giunta. Enjoy your medal sargeant!!
Good evening, Brian. I wanted to write here yesterday about the new Medal of Honor recipient, but couldn't find the time to, and ever since I've been looking for the right time. I watched Sgt. Giunta's interview with Lara Logan on Sunday night's '60 Minutes' and was so deeply moved by his great humility and bravery. The piece was just wonderful, and although it is another network of course, I recommend those who haven't seen it yet to watch online. There is absolutely nothing that moves me more than hearing stories from such brave soldiers as Sgt. Giunta. Seeing and hearing how he receives this highest honor in the military as a reward for all those he fought with is so greatly moving and touching, and just simply makes me so overwhelmingly proud. As President Obama said during the ceremony, Sgt. Giunta represents all those men and woman serving our country. God Bless him, all those he fought beside, and all those who are serving currently in Afghanistan and Iraq. We can't ever let them leave our thoughts, our prayers, or let our support for them waver.

This web page boasts, "NBC News represents the largest single daily source of news in America." However, the leading story of Tuesday evening was the engagement and potential marriage of Britain's royalty. A poor choice in the order of delivery of news worthy events, especially since America had its own regal story that deserved the "top story" slot..... the award of the Medal of Honor to a true American hero, Sgt Giunta.
May the location of the royal wedding (Abbey vs Cathedral) be the hardest choice William and Kate have to overcome. That doesn't compare to the the deployments (Iraq vs Afghanistan) that our American service men and woman are faced with each day.
