Because we've all had enough politics, let's talk about air travel today. As I wrote a few days ago, I was a lucky recipient of the new "enhanced" pat-down procedure, a few days ago at LAX. I'll put it this way: I was expecting the guy to at least offer to buy me dinner afterwards. Anyway, this is top of mind because of a notable column by Joe Sharkey in this morning's New York Times. It speaks directly to what is often the problem with airline security: The lack of standard application. So...give it a read, see what you think. We are preparing for nine straight hours of election night coverage. Something new this year: No Leno, no Fallon--just us. Late night. Maybe all night. We'll see. I hope you can join us tonight, beginning with Nightly News--coming back on the air for prime time and for the long haul.

I will definitely be following the returns on NBC tonight. I wouldn't have it any other way. By the way, thanks Brian for being a great role-model for my 17 year old son. He really respects you. He once asked me who Walter Cronkite was. I told him he was once considered to be the most trusted man in America. My son replied that he bets that Brian Williams is now. I couldn't agree more. When good celebrity-role-models are hard to come by, as a mother I give you my heart felt thanks. I hope my son gets an opportunity to meet you someday. Thanks for you blog. I really enjoy it.
Students were really engaged in 2008. Today, I'm told, turn out was light at the district that includes UCONN.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, A great broadcast this evening with the wonderful NBC News Political Team! An exciting election night with so many close races in different States.
Now on to the broadcast. First of all hearing from all the reporters in all the States with majorly tight races it appears the decisions will come down to the wire. Highly contentious campaigns between the candidates and now the voters have their say in the final decision. Time will tell.
The report by Mr.Holt showed what issues are of most concern to voters with the economy and jobs at the top. So many people are struggling with finances and being layed off it is a troubling situation. The voters are dissatisfied with the government and the job it is doing. And this will be reflected in their voting decisions.
On another note the bombings in Iraq are horrible with so many lives lost. Just after the awful, tragic attack on the church where so many lives were lost then. One always hopes for peace.
The piece by Rehema Ellis about voters and the different reasons they vote certain ways was interesting. Telling of what is important to each and every voter. I agree the parties need to learn to work together and not have so much bickering. Time will tell.
Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Looking forward to NBC News coverage of the election this evening and late evening. Peace to You and to All!
Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe annd Well Richard! Enjoyed seeing you on the Today Show this morning! Always excellent reporting! Good to know you're still in New York!
Take Extra Good Care Richard and Crew!
XOXO
Lisa
Thanks for the continuous coverage, Brian. Tonight and always! We appreciate it and enjoy the broadcast daily. Also, (and I didn't set my dvr) but I could've sworn there was a typo on your financial markets summary graphic.
Brian - I did read that article earlier today in the NY Times about the "pat down". All I can say is I haven't set foot on a plane in 30 years and don't think I'm feeling the urge to do so now. Yes, there are quite a few places I would just love to visit such as London and Hawaii, Spain and so forth, but last time I checked Greyhound does not offer transportation to those destinations . . . !!
Watching your nightly broadcast is almost an addiction. My boyfriend and I always look forward to your personal comments and strongly believe you must have been a writer for comedic satire in another life. Unfortunately, today was one of those days that politics is so much in my face that I decided to take a break! I turned in my vote and the gave my brain a political shutdown. If I have to hear one more negative ad, one more insult against our President (even if he's not liked, all Presidents should be respected) I think I would go insane! Since when being nasty is the new norm? Anyway, I'm sure when I wake up tomorrow morning it will again be shoved in my face so I'm sure I'm not missing anything.
Anyway, thank you for your delightful comment on the pat-down procedure. I will be flying to England in a couple of weeks so now I know more or less what to expect and I will be thinking about the "buying me dinner" comment, laugh out loud, and pray the person patting me won't take offense if I repeat your comment but this time out loud
Thank you for making me look forward to your nightly broadcast. You will always have a fan here in Miami
Last Call Republicans. Stop the Looting and start Prosecuting!!
Thrilled that you're still on the air at 3:00 a.m. ET. A sad night for many of us viewing, but terrific to see you, Andrea Mitchell, Pete Williams and all the serious hitters still awake and with us.
Here in the UK with the US military, it was nice to get up at 5 a.m. and see that AFN (Armed Forces Network) had NBC on and they kept you on until you signed off at 7:30 a.m. our time. So thankful I didn't have to watch FOX to get the latest. It's interesting to know that the Republicans' rally call was a plan to cut spending. We've been in the military for 27 years now and our biggest benefits always came when the Republicans were in control. That's why the country is in the trouble we're in now.
On to air travel. Shirley, get on a plane and go see what the world has to offer. We fly in and out of the London airports almost monthly. It is a hassle to go through all the screening and have to show up so early, but there is so much to see and experience out there. We get military alerts all the time on terrorism and "situational awareness." We are aware, but my feeling is that I have a greater risk of being killed here in the UK because I looked the wrong direction when crossing the street than being killed by a terrorist. But I sure am glad we visited Greece last week and not this!
And Justin, yes, I believe the financial graphic was a day old. We don't normally notice that, but for some reason it jumped out today.
I hope all the team is able to unwind and get some sleep. It's going to be a very interesting 24 months ahead.
hope the new republicans in the house make our returning iraqi and afghanistan war vets a top priority, especially the wounded warriors and those coming back with post traumatic stress disorder. i live next to ft. huachuca in arizona so we see our soldiers in town all of the time. i just ordered more pacifica soy candles for aromatherapy. the avalon juniper is amazing, the native americans and the tibetan monks use juniper for purifying, and the tuscan blood orange instantly lifts your mood. i feel transported to italy, no plane needed! take good care, best, anna martina
Yeah, I know, heard so many times, however, at this point my phobia regarding planes has blown up completely! Thank goodness for the family vacations we took when I was a child, haven't been to Europe, which I would love to see.
brian and anne thompson, how are the bird migrations going in the marshes of louisiana?
I don't know how late YOU managed to stay up, Brian. I caved about 1:30am or so. Even though I had a late nap, guess I just don't have "The Right Stuff" to keep up with all the NBC family!!! KUDOS -- ya'll are great at TEAMWORK!!! Personally, I was a bit disenfranchised -- living in two worlds, registered in one and mostly in the other. I sat this one out, rather than vote in the wrong one.
I where a metal leg brace. At one airport I was patted down in places I didn't even know I had. The pat down was in full view of two lines of people going through the security scanning. I was asked to remove the brace and patted down again. I told the security person that if she tried a little harder it would classify as a massage.
My 87 year old mom has balance problems and refuses to travel by air because they make her remove her shoes. Her shortened tendons will not allow her to walk without heeled shoes. She went through the security process in pain and hanging onto everyone and everything. The security person had never heard of anyone not being able to take off their shoes.
After the shoe bomber, I said it was a good thing it wasn't an underwear bomber, or we would have to remove our underwear. I refuse to be Xrayed, mainly because of the radiation I've already experienced from former Xrays. Guess where that leaves me?
Brian, your comment about airline security the day after the election is appropriate. Our nation is at threat from more than airline terrorists. If our courts fail, so does the democracy and process of security peace. You can read my story Toxic Justice and get to me website by googling "Nancy Swan" and "Toxic Justice" .
After reading my story, you will see my connection to today's news story about the bribing of judges through election campaign contributions and other methods. Google "Minor, 2 ex-judges to be resentenced this month" Paul Minor was my former attorney and Judge Whitfield was my former judge. It was my information about campaign loans to judges that started the DOJ investigation of judicial bribery.
Brian: I read Sharkey's Times article. Is airport security becoming militaristic? Hold your hands up? Was Sharkey mistaken for a terrorist suspect? Fortunately, Brian you were just subjected to the old pat down procedure. Happy flying everyone!
Brian, I watch your news every night.. and it is enjoyable.. tonight I could not help but notice when you finished a long sentence I could hear you getting enough air into your lungs to finish the next sentence... sure hope you are ok.. last nights election was hard on everyone.
Dear Mr. Williams,
I attended your commencement speech last year and wanted to use it for my forensic competition bu haven't been able to find it anywhere online. I would really love to use it because I thought it was very funny but also was very inspiring. I was wondering if you would be willing to share a copy of your speech with me.
Thanks,
Michelle
Wow, that must have been quite a search. I guess I'm lucky I wasn't selected during the 4 flights it took to get to and from DC for the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or FEAR this weekend. I'm certainly not a frequent flyer, and I thought security at both airports was pretty efficient and quick. Hope your other air travels in the future aren't quite so dramatic! Keep up the great work! (By the way, my Rally sign said "I get my NEWS from Brian Williams, my voice of reason from Jon Stewart, and my EPIC WIN from Stephen Colbert!" Anyone interested can see it here: http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/301/a/6/my_rally_2_restore_sanity_sign_by_fractalblaze-d31nxyf.jpg :)
This kind of screening is nothing more than harassment to provide an illusion that the government is protecting air travellers.
I have an artificial knee that gets me special attention. I have to step out of the line, go to a special area, and wait for a special security person. I have to walk around on the dirty floors with no shoes on, then get hand scanned, raising my arms a dozen times(not easy for me), remove my belt while they check my pants, and empty my pockets. On my last trip they x-rayed my handkerchief, then a nickel, then a cough drop, and finally my pocket comb, each one separately. No purpose in it, just harrassment. On top of it, they kept the card signed my my doctor describing the metal parts in my knee.
This is ridiculous! I am 80yrs. old, a decendant of the pioneers that founded this country, a war veteran, and spent 30 years working on secret military projects with special security clearances. I have had the background checks. Do I sound like a potential terrorist? Do we all have to suffer because terrorist profiling might offend someone? And then to top it off, the air freight in the baggage compartment under your seat is not screened.
