If you're suffering in the heat today here's an interesting fact you can use when someone asks "is it hot enough for you?" According to the National Climatic Data Center, the period from January to June was the warmest six months on the planet since records were first kept. This current heat wave blankets a big part of the country this weekend. Here in the east it's that wicked combo of heat and humidity, while the west is baking in a virtual dry oven with temperatures in some spots reaching into the triple digits. I found myself fantasizing about winter today, which is a sure sign the heat is getting to me (in January I'll be blogging about the joys of July). We'll have more on the heat on tonight's broadcast.
We're of course also keeping tabs on the undersea drama in the Gulf of Mexico. A lot of eyes are keeping watch on that new containment cap over the ruptured well, and so far all the readings look good -- meaning no signs of leaks. We'll update the operation and look ahead at the next major challenges in this disaster.
Remember all those pets that needed homes after Hurricane Katrina? The oil crisis threatens to create a similar predicament for those suffering economic hardships in the Gulf and our Michelle Kosinski will share some of those heart breaking stories on tonight's program.
Thanks for checking in. We'll look for you tonight on NBC Nightly News.

Maybe BP in getting it "right" can do right by setting aside additional funds to care for ALL animals in the Gulf.
But I have serious doubts. Lately, hearing disappointing news of BP's public relations record. Not surprising, their past actions and decisions were not always "right."
Just yesterday, a prominent Politico said, "BP needs to retain a better PR firm." Public Relations is not the problem. BP, the company, lacks a soul.
Talk radio states the claim process is tedious, stressful, slow, agonizing.
The way I see it-
The folks of Louisiana did not ask for a disaster attached to forever painful knotted heartache strings.
Make it right BP. Loose the knotted strings, create a more simple, speedy claim process, be ethical and true and give the Gulf back its life.
About the only thing not heating up is the blogosphere and Dick Cheney's new heart pump.
According to the doc who was on the Maddow show he said the LVAD pump that Cheney now has will circulate blood throughout his body but Cheney will not have a pulse.
The only 2 people I've read about who are alive without a pulse are Count Dracula and now Dick Cheney. Still, after a few days after Maddow and a mention on Nightly the blogosphere is still quiet.
Didn't take long but I guess Dick Cheney is no longer relevant.
isn't it wonderful:-)

The song you wrote in response to Brian's "O Happy Day" blog is so beautiful. I read it twice. You are gifted.
Terrific broadcast. I was most touched by Michelle's story.
So many pets.....few loving homes.

BP had to get advice from those oil companies overseas to end the spill. Good news for the Gulf States and the citizens.
Well the truth was told at last. On Jan. 20, 2008 at 12 noon the mission was put in place as announced by Rush Limbaugh and the Fox Fake News. Make sure Obama and the American people fail. For over a year the GOP and some Dems have made it their business to complete the mission. Voting No on every Bill needed by the American taxpayers but Voting Yes for Banks/Corporations. Now it's time for the election in Nov. and the reports are it's Obama's fault vote Republican. Just how stupid do these Law Makers think people are. We watched for 8 years a Congress give a blank check to the Bush team without question. Bush gave Iraq one trillion dollars and said Iraq never had to pay the money back. We watched contractors get billions for sloppy work and sometimes no work at all. As the Law Makers said our troops were taking care of I had to buy my daughter a bullet proof vest because it wasn't in the budget, she had to pay for cleaning and meals. People like Mr. Chalabi were paid thousands monthy to lie and make sure the World believed Saddam had WMDs and the famous Mushroom Cloud. A video released showed even Natanyahu was playing the US for fools while getting taxpayers money for Israel. We have to clean up our own house before telling others what to do. First we have to go back to our real Christian Values of respect for not only each other but for our President. We teach our kids not to lie but we see our Law Makers openly lie and thing nothing of it. Elect candidates that will work for you and not hide behind God as we're seen. I remember George W. Bush said God told him to be President weill we now see it wasn't God talking to him. The United States needs the help of the World just like the World needs the help of the USA. But first trust must be earned because the USA has lied for 8 years and no spin/blame will change that.
have a great day all

BP is on track which is good news, but I will believe it when I see it.
I have mixed feelings about the prisoners in California. Some are good men who got in trouble
because of bad influence and need another chance -- anybody can make a mistake, but there
are others who are bad to the bone and belong in prison.
A heart breaking story about the family pets. In our family, a dog has always been part of
the family.
So Queen Elizabeth is feeling the pinch like the rest of us, and I read that she may be
brankrupt in 2012. I suppose she did not save for a rainy day. Well, I didn't either. I'll cut
back, like the Queen.
Have a nice evening!

Good Evening Mr.Holt, A fine broadcast this Saturday evening! Try to stay cool in all the heat! It is hot down here in Georgia too!
Now on to hte broadcast. First of all the report by Anne Thompson from Venice, LA telling of the extended testing of the pressure readings coming from the well. At least no more oil has leaked into the Gulf although seeing the endless ribbons of oil and miles of sheen it is still going to take months to clean all the oil up from the waters and the shorelines. It is encouraging the work on the relief wells is progressing and it will be really good when the oil is permanently stopped from leaking.
The report by Mr.Potter showed from the flyover how huge the spill and the oil is continuing to wash up on the beaches which is hard for the workers to keep up in cleaning. The coastlines are being inundated with waves of oil and it is difficult to control. It will take months before the beaches will be clean and even then oil may still be beneath the surface of the sand. One hopes from improving conditions each day.
The report by Rehema Ellis told of how the nation is dealing with sweltering temperatures in the triple digits in many places. People are doing their best to stay cool and seeing the heat rising from the streets in New York showed how hot the air. One hopes some relief will come soon.
So sad to learn of a Medal of Honor recipient Nicky Bacon passing away at only 64yrs old. He served his country bravely and saved many others in battle. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
The piece by Michelle Kosinski about the people having to give up their pets because they cannot afford to keep them was heartbreaking. All these pets were part of peoples families and it must be so extremely difficult to give them up to a shelter. Such cute puppies especially the maltese puppies! All of the faithful companions and one hopes they all find loving homes to care from them.
Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Holt! See You on Sunday! Stay Cool! Peace to You and to All!
Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard!
Take Extra Good Care Richard and Crew!
XOXO

What ever happened to the 3 billion California was going to invest in embryonic stem cell research? Oh well looks like the democrats will have plenty of poll enforcers out just in time for the 2010 and 2012 elections.
Can't they come up with some sort of tractor/combine/washing machine contraption to scoop that oil stained sand up rinse it off and spit it back out? Call in the experts from John Deere, Whirlpool, Dawn Liquid Detergent and toss in some Nascar mechanics. :-)
If the Queen of England becomes bankrupt in 2012, as predicted, it begs the question:
The End of Britain? (National Review magazine, back copy)
Phyllis
(Are you still wearing a smile after my last blog to ya)
My Brit cousin is back here in the suburbs of Florida..
Carla loves America, especially Chicago and deep pan pizza..
She has been reading Brian's blog today and she loves some and frowns on others..
Here is something.. Regarding the British excellent healthcare for all..
Carla reminds me that when she was 16, the school kids teased her about her "funny" nose. The mean constant taunt affected her emotionally to the point where she had to visit a psychotherapist.
"Pain" says Carla. In the end, after many visits and sessions, the
Doctor recommended for the "sake of good mental health" that Carla should have cosmetics surgery, a nose job...and in the end her Ma and Pa agreed..and all expenses including therapy were paid by the gov't.
Mimi,
I am all smiles. Your friend reminds me of the story of Princess Diana and her "friends" sent her
photos of what she would like with a nose job and she thought it was hilarious. That imperfection
made her infinitely more beautiful and more beautiful than the beautiful. Look at Jessica Simpson
with that small bump on her nose. She is breathtakingly gorgeous and the hottest one out there.
Phyllis
Lester,
I just read that the threat of bad weather poses efforts to plug BP's ruptured oil wells to
a near standstill, forcing clean-up crew to evacuate. The sea will tell.
