The oil has reached Lake Pontchartrain. This is a huge development. I'm listening to WWL Radio in my office, listening to the callers reacting to this demoralizing development in that City. Pontchartrain is huge. It was the water from Pontchartrain that flooded the City during Katrina. One theory has it that the oil, entering the lake from the Southwest, is going to cycle and circle through the lake before exiting to the East. The thought of oil in places like Mandeville and Slidell is beyond comprehension. This means New Orleans, which for 70 days has been able to claim that it has no oil—now will have oil to the north of the City...and surrounding the City. This means the oil has moved hundreds of miles...to the north, east and west. And now Texas is dealing with it. In terms of raw political impact and lobbying power, this now means there is oil fouling five States. That's 10 U.S. Senators. That's one-tenth of the U.S. Senate. Maybe the power of numbers, and the rising anger will result in something. Right now, nothing in the Gulf is safe, a way of life is dying, and both mankind and nature...are sitting ducks.
We hope you can join us tonight.
