The only living boy in New York

I guess I didn't think it through. I saw that July 4th fell on a Sunday this year, and figured Monday would be a standard workday. I tore myself away from my beloved Jersey Shore (where my son reports it's one of the all-time great beach days) and came into work today, only to find: it was as if someone made an announcement that the last person left in New York City would have cooties. You can roll a bowling ball down 6th Avenue outside our building and watch it fall off the other end of the island into the Hudson River. There's no one here. The company bought us cheeseburgers today (baked beans, apple pie, nice) because there are so few places to get take-out. So I'll say this: we have a broadcast full of news, we've been working on it all day, and we're anxious to share it with you. If you happen to be near a TV, that would be great.

We hope you can join us tonight, and happy (belated) 4th of July.

Brian the Jersey Shore Beach of Long Branch is so great and clean well you know what I mean. Yes it's sun tan weather but not for me I have my tan year round but I still use sun screen. Now the water is cold but the sand it hot hot hot.

Just think we started in 1776 with a nation of freedom and democracy and we've done pretty well but the work continues. The USA lucked out with some of the smartest leaders but there's always the wannabes and wing nuts slipping in. Michael Steele had nothing smart or intelligent to say so he said something stupid but many others have done the same. As Americans enjoyed the holiday I was glad to see the President and First Lady continued their support of our troops and remembered their efforts during these days. Few people even gave a thought as even the Law Makers rushed off to have fun at home with their families leaving nothing done for the people in need.

see you same time but now on the East Coast smile

Good evening, Brian! Happy (belated) July 4th to you as well! I love your imagery here, and especially your use of the term "cooties"! Haven't heard that one in a while. Also, love the blog title (one of the best Simon & Garfunkel songs in my book). I hope you enjoyed a wonderful Independence Day on your beloved Jersey Shore! Sorry you couldn't stay longer. I was planning on visiting the Jersey Shore during that (first time) New York trip we planned to take this month that sadly didn't fall through. I promise though, whenever I make it up there (rain, shine or SNOW!) I'll pay a great visit to your beloved Jersey Shore (along with some Springsteen).

As always, I'm anxious to join you for NN tonight. And I hope you'll be airing Richard Engel's great report on the Pedros in Afghanistan (the combat paramedics). An incredible, and compelling story into what these people do on a daily basis.

See you soon, and will probably have to run for something to eat after the broadcast. Thanks for that!

Good Evening Mr.Williams, A belated Happy Fourth of July to You and Your Family! I am sorry you had to come back to work, I wish you could have been at the Jersey Shore one more day! Looking forward to the broadcast as always. I liked your imagery in your posting this evening! Very Humorous!

I also hope that you show Richard Engel's report about the Pedros, the combat paramedics in Afghanistan. I saw his report from the Today Show and it was so compelling, emotional and showed how brave these men in these missions.

      Looking forward to the broadcast!

Peace to You and to All!

Yes, I saw you. But I missed the part about what the Queen was wearing. Obviously the most important piece of news today, so I'm here looking for a photo! Enjoy the Americana food!

          Mr. W.

Yes, I thought it would be a normal day as well. As I work from home deciding to go home early is probably a bit easier for me than you, which was the way I chose to handle it. Any chance we can keep this going for a week or two?

Good Evening Mfr.Williams, A fine broadcast this evening as always.

First of all the report by Mr.Truong concerning the oil spill disaster which is causing much hardship to the people of the region and the weather dictating the progress of the cleanup efforts. The huge ship the A Whale certainly will help tremendously in taking on massive barrels of oil, but more testing is required before it can begin work. It is good news the relief wells are ahead of schedule on being built perhaps being done at the end of the month, but that is still uncertain. Hearing tar balls have been found on Lake Ponchatrain is terrible and hopefully it can be cleaned up quickly.

The report by Mr.Mott about the businesses impacted by the oil spill showed how so many people are staying away from the beaches. The restaurants empty and the condo rental reservations are down due to many juts not wanting to go due to the oil. It was nice to see the family who came to the area regardless of the oil because they love coming there and were not cancelling their plans.

One hopes progress will be made in the coming days to stop the leak, although it will take years for people to recover their livelihood of living and working in the region.

The report by Mr.Sanders was heartbreaking because it spoke of the mental anguish all the fishermen are going through not being able to work on the waters they have worked on so long. It is tragic to hear some cannot take the anguish anymore. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those families struggling in this crisis. Hopefully, many will get some help from counselors, but it will take some time to rebuils livelihoods.

Hope everyone can try and stay cool in the next few days along the Eastcoast! I hope the heatwave doesn't last long.

Nice to see Queen Elizabeth getting a Blackberry! She is reaching a new age of technology! Very good to learn she is visiting New York City tomorrow!

The "Making A Difference" segment by Mr.O'Neil showed how technology reaching a town can really help so many people. It is great to know this town now has access to the internet which will give opportunities to everyone to benefit from all the informantion.

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!

            Be Well Always!

Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard! Excellent Reporting today!

Take Extra Good Care Richard and Crew!

Looking forward to seeing you on the Rachel Maddow Show Tuesday and Wednesday!

In "Wall Street" to show triumph, power, the core of New York, the director, Oliver Stone, allows the camera to sweep NY and lo, of course, the only suitable view is the magnificent sole shot of the Statue Of Liberty brooding over a massive, dark, extensive body of water.

Hi, Brian. I hope you'll forgive a little misplaced curiosity. I've noticed that on weekends and on your days off, the Nightly broadcast seems to originate from a different studio. There's no establishing wide shot of the studio or the lighted desk, for example, and New York-based reporters who might usually join you live on set talk to the anchor from another studio entirely. Never noticed this practice with the old set; just the last couple of years in the new studio. May I ask...is there a reason for this? Seems a shame, what with the new studio being so handsome and all.

Thanks for all you do, Brian.

                Gratefully,

Good Ol' NBC, nice to see they made sure the cast and crew of the top rated National Newscast "dined like Kings" on the day of our country's birth, so what kinda spread do they feed around the Christmas holidays?

                      Mr. Williams,

I was very disappointed in your, an MSNBCs dicision to show the footage that you did on the shootout in Arkansas. The fact that you showed the bodies of two police officers lying on the ground, after they were gunned downed, showed an incredible lack of compassion and professionalism.

I know that it is journalistic practice not to show the bodies of fallen soldiers, these officers and their families deserve no less. You not only showed their bodies lying there on the ground, you then showed footage of the shooter opening fire on them with an assault rifle. What were you thinking, obviously what ever it was, it had nothing to do with the feelings of these mens families.

They gave their lives in the line of duty, protecting people like you and me. What do you give them in return, more pain for the families they left behind.

                      You should be ashamed.

same as the one you had today but no apple pie. Cup cakes, instead. I missed your broadcast

hola, brian, like my father used to tell me, 'you'll get your reward in heaven . . . . .' it was really great to watch the fireworks from the trailer last night while i was watering the garden. fireworks just make me feel warm and fuzzy:-) in many other countries, i would have hit skid row when i fell off of the turnip truck because i couldn't work anymore. social security disability is a tremendous blessing. i try to give back for my monthly stipend. so, the thought of 'america' and what she stands for is really with me every day. i'm glad that the social security disability benefit will be there for those of our wounded soldiers who can no longer work, too. it's been a long time since i've been to a beach. i get a little euphoric and light-headed on a beach. the sound of the water just does me in. i'm sure they'll make your lost day up to you and the beach won't be so crowded, then. take good care, blessings, anna martina

the playful frothiness of the wave's fingetrips tickled her

as she slipped off her sandals and stepped into the incoming tide.

she tensed and shivered with the shock of the 60 degree water

as it whooshed over her ankles.

the sun glistened on the wetness and she went in a little further

as her legs numbed to the temperature.

the power of the water was in evidence even at mid-calf

and she laughed at the wave which seemed bent on

convincing her to come out and play.

the freshness of the air filled her lungs and the overall

sense of well-being that was pulsing at her from the

delicious coldness of the water and the throbbing

warmth of the sun made her feel langorously

sensual. she felt achingly alive. nursery rhymes

and ditties from her youth came to her and she sang

snatches of them softly into the breeze.

as she walked along the beach, mid-thigh in the water,

a wave hit her suddenly with its insistent challenge

to her send of balance. she laughed again.

in acknowledgement of its force and power, she turned

into the wave with her feet planted wide and firm

and let the waters tug on her as they went rushing

back into the depths. the sudden pulse of benevolent

strength that came at her from the west and

enveloped her left her feeling surprised and breathless.

                          it was time to go.

this was too intoxicating. the memory would stay

with her until the next time she could come

                          from the desert to visit.

                                Hi Anna,
I did take a creative writing class when I was 20, and in college.
This class along with "Art Appreciation" are my most loved.
Nothing like reading. Expand your world.
"Sabrina Fair"- I wrote ( homework) 6 years ago.
Got an "A". I have a few more buried away in my bedroom.
Tired. Have a test on Thursday and honestly I am not fully prepared.
I love what we are studying.

Amazing. I am learning and the stuff I learn is a reflection of current times.
My Ma said some pretty RAW things about Afghanistan- yesterday.
Anna, I have to share. When I do, I hope it is fit to print.
Will do later. No time now.
                                Have to gather my thoughts.
I will also share our plans for our trip to the Big Apple.
                                See ya.

                                      Brian & Jackie-

In my "younger" days (Jurassic era) when we did summer rentals "down the shore" (Jersey shore of course) and hung out on the beach all summer -- when the weather was like this we would take our sand chairs and put them in the shallows and sit in the water when we weren't body surfing or swimming. That way we spent all day in the water. Only way to stay cool! Of course we looked like prunes at the end of the day, but oh it was bliss! Hated to have to come off the beach onto the hot land.

Watch yourself Brian -- I'm paying the dermatologist now for all those great beach days! Good to hear you are slathering up Jackie.

Hope everyone had a great 4th and do take care -- especially if you are on the east coast in the heat.

I will be "following" the "ChickaBOOMer."

                                                Brian,

Now that's hilarious, but don't feel bad. One Sunday several months ago, I miscalculated the days and thought I'd go into work early to get a jump on the day. I get there and work for an hour expecting everyone else around 8:00am and no one's there about 8:15am I am mad because I am expecting to get a lot of calls because it's the last day of the month and the market opens in little over an hour. I text one of my co-workers asking him where and the hell is he and at first he does not reply I then text him again, and he finally responds asking me what am I talking about, I ask if he were running late for work why didn't he give me a heads-up; he replies "because I don't work on Sundays"....My bad, I thought it was Monday. I still get emails on Fridays reminding me that we are closed on Sundays.

Maybe Brian could ask Katie, Dianne, or his own son who have college degrees to interpret a calendar for him.  This incident is not a faux pas, its called ignorance.

It is not my intent to trivialize the massive oil spill, but remember the story about the Dutch boy who

plugged a hole in the dyke with his finger and the flow of water stopped?
