Happy July 4th.
What a roller coaster the last 234 years have been, huh? These of course seem like tough times now, with a pair of wars, high unemployment, and the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico all challenging the country right now. There have been tougher days since 1776, and the there will always be more ahead of us. I suppose at the core of being an American is the belief that our national compass eventually finds the correct, and upward path. The 27 immigrants being sworn-in as US citizens today aboard the USS Constitution in Boston certainly share that belief. They come from 20 countries, from China to Sri Lanka, but from today on will be known as Americans. They are among hundreds of immigrants taking the oath of citizenship across the country over this long holiday weekend, claiming their stake in the American ideals of hope, freedom and opportunity. We wish them well and welcome them to the celebration.
I hope you're finding time to enjoy the holiday. We'll all get out of here tonight to partake in the fireworks and food, but for now we're preparing tonight's broadcast with the latest on some of those aforementioned challenges, and the many ways folks across the nation are spending this weekend.
We'll look for you on NBC Nightly News.
