Kate Snow writes: "Spies?"
"Spies? Why? Tell me in 20 seconds."
That's the conversation I just walked in on at the Nightly News desk.
It's just a piece of the ongoing conversation we have on a day like this.
This happens to be a particularly busy holiday Friday for us. Meaning, we have way too many stories to fit in our half hour broadcast.
And so the conversation about spies...and the jobs numbers...and the oil spill...and the mea culpa from Apple about the iPhone 4...and LeBron James...and this great moment we heard about in Afghanistan...and Brazil's loss in the World Cup.
Somehow we'll fit most of it in for you.
And we'll preserve some time too for my favorite story of the day. It's about a bunch of kids who live and breathe soccer in South Africa, and how a new pair of cleats can change their world. I promise you'll want to see it.
I thank Brian for letting me sit at his desk again and I thank you for tuning in tonight.
Have a wonderful Independence Day weekend!

I haven't read all the details that have come out so far. I remember reading people were wondering why most of them were in New York and not DC. My guess is it's "destroyer envy" After all Manhattan was able to do to America what the old Soviet Union couldn't do for over 40 years. Oh and most of the people responsible for it so far have managed to stay out of jail, walk away from a ruined companies with huge bonuses, stay in government jobs, get promoted to higher office or get bailed out. You just know the Russians are scratching there heads saying WTF?
Sweet blog (fingers crossed that no one will critique my blog as "fluff")
That's me a "light and fluff gal" - according to my pals.
Ya see, so many depressing facts/events in the news/world:
Unemployment woes and Congress breaks without a vote on extending benefits.
To the hard core Republicans, I say,- have mercy. No jobs are being created.
Give needy folks the aid. Deficit, you say?!
We waste taxpayers money on useless, senseless stuff and we have the proof- "Nightly" reported the waste.
Another sad topic: Immigration Reform. This was a campaign promise that WE, pals and I embraced: "Hope" "A new kind of Politics" "End to Wars" and
"Immigration Reform."
We LOVE our President and we pray for success.
It is unfair, illegal and wrong to stereotype a group of people. We, as a country, our motto is- "Give me your tired, your poor."
So
....When a story such as the "SPY" pops up (although serious) it is captivating and it offers all that is in a good Cold War, '50s, movie.
Strain, tension occur- and a femme fatale is sent to deceive, gather, report.
The SPIES had to be successful. Why did they continue the mission until the very end, their time of arrest?
Hey Anna. Sweet hello to ya.
You are the sweetest thing alive.
Your poems are gifts to Brian and Ann but I feel they belong to me. They nourish the soul and rescue the mind. Love ya, Anna.
Watching, now, "The Ed Show."
Chairman Michael Steele puts his big foot in his mouth again.
Ms. Snow, charming blog.
I get it. Serious topics. Serious times.
Good Evening Kate, Nice to see you again filling in for Mr.Williams. Another fine broadcast as always.
First of all the report by Anne Thompson from Venice, Louisiana and how the boats are now returning to the seas to continue the clean up. As one saw from the air in the report the storm did cause the boom to be moved further into the marshes will will mean much more work for the crews to repair and replace. This is only the beginning of the hurricane season with many more storm predicted for the months ahead. It is alarming to think the oil could move towards to Florida Keys, Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Whether it be in the form of oil slick or tar balls it is just plain awful for all the States affected by this disaster.
The report by Mr.Potter revealed how much will be lost by all the businesses during this Summer season. Beaches and restaurants along the beaches are all empty because tourists are not coming to the area due to the oil. Usually crowded at this time of year and especially this weekend it is sad to see all the businesses visibly empty. There will be huge economic losses because of this terrible oil spill and one hopes someday all those affected will recover. It will take years and that is very heartbreaking.
On another note it is good to see General Petraeus arrive in Afghanistan today. Hopefully, some progress will be made in the coming months towards peace. Time will tell.
The piece about the couple in the military who flew aircrafts and finally saw eachther during a refueling mission. That was so very sweet and touching! The sun setting in the sky added to the emotion of the meeting at 28,000ft. Truly the best mission ever!
Thank You for the broadcast Kate! Have a wonderful holiday weekend! Happy Fourth of July to You!

hola, kate, i am frying reading dexter filkins' book 'the forever war'. i am on page 168, i felt awful for all of those premie babies with no electricity or oxygen for their incubators. not to mention the sassaman mess, which i did read the expanded version, 8 or 9 pages, in the nyt. after i finish that, if i live through it, i have richard engel's book to read. today, my third eye feels swollen shut and my arms and legs feel as if they've been beaten, ugh. i am way too empathic! as news people, you all must have to keep yourself removed at some level from the daily news or go absolutely crazy. i am hoping that the oil-eating bacteria from lsu gets approved and does a fantastic job. it looks like they have quite a bit of boom line to fix in the gulf and no doubt another tropical storm is already brewing, yowza. i hope they can flood those rice fields in louisiana for the fall migration of the birds. several years back, an iceberg calved in antarctica and attached itself to the spot where the female penguins make their annual march to the ocean after they have left the dads keeping the eggs warm in their brooding grounds. that trek is daunting enough, without adding any more miles to it. all of the penguins would have died because they would have been pushed beyond their endurance, the females, and the babies and their fathers would not have had the food to sustain them that the females bring back from their ocean trek. an interesting thing happened. fresh fish starting raining out of the sky like manna from heaven. the penguin tribe had to have a meeting, but it was obvious, they were supposed to eat the fish. so, the penguins lived. god does provide. the iceberg that had calved to the penguins feeding spot on the ocean broke off and moved further down the continent the following year. i can't remember how i found the article. there was another article around the same time showing that a piece of newfoundland calved during a very cold winter a very long time ago and is down in antarctica, too. just like there are pieces of the south, i.e., georgia, the carolinas and the virginias, in russia. the earth looks like a patchwork quilt. that happened very long ago, of course, when the americas were iced over. that kind of long view helps to keep the daily deluge of bad news in perspective. the human psyche is more than just a 100-yr. time line. take very good care, anna martina
Good afternoon, Kate. Just wanted to thank you for filling in for Brian Friday night, and wish everyone a happy Independence Day weekend.
I loved last night's report about the military couple who happened to run into each other while refueling jets. An extraordinary story! And as always, a terrific Making A Difference story.
Want to wish everyone a happy July 4th! Have a safe and happy day celebrating our nation!

Please continue to tell the American people about the 11 Russian Spies. We rarely hear about these type things and it was interesting to see how deep they were in-bedded in American society. While their crimes may be limited to some, this is National Security. Thanks again for broadcasting this event. James
