Oil on the soles of my shoes

I arrived at 30 Rock this afternoon in time to join our afternoon editorial meeting in progress—and I noticed something on the bottom of my shoe: oil. I had carried it from Florida by air to New Orleans, through the airport, onto the plane, through LaGuardia and all the way to our newsroom. And now...its preserved forever in this photo. This oil stains like ink from a pen—I have it on my shirt and pants, and on a shirt from a previous visit. It doesn't come out. There's a lesson in that.

There you go again making another one of our government agencies look bad.
TSA didn't pull you out of line or did you fly on a private jet like that "Ted Haggard of Environmentalism" Algore?

Brian - Seems the media is avoiding the topic of how this impacts human health, and the food chain from crops to livestock. Also, what would the ramifications be if a hurricane goes over oil tainted water? Does the oil get pulled into the storm clouds to later rain down inland?

I think many realize we probbly have not seen the worst from this yet, but only the tip of the iceburg - but that doesn't seem to be discussed...

I'd like to start see this type of dialogue occurring in the press.

    Thanks for all you do.

Hi, I just watched msnbc news tonight (June 30th 2010) and saw a story about a young mother of two, also raising her sister. The story showed her opening a personal letter from someone who had sent her $100 to buy diapers/wipes/etc. and I thought that was a very moving and wonderful gesture. I was wondering how I could go about sending money directly to a family effected by the oil spill like these people did. If anyone could direct me to a sight or organization that does anything like this, I would greatly appreciate it.

      Thanks very much.

Good Evening Mr.Williams, A fine broadcast this evening. Nice to see you back in New York! Seeing the oil still stuck to the sole of your shoes shows it is not coming off and apparently will not come out of clothes either since it is still clothing from your previous visit. It is tragic the beaches will have that oil deep into the sand for years to come.

Now on to the broadcast. First of all the report by Anne Thompson from Venice, LA that showed how Hurricane Alex is holding the clean up at a standstill by causing high winds and seas. Which brings the oil deeper into the marshes and onto the beaches. Hearing the relief well are coming along is encouraging news, but it will still take some time to reach the leaking pipe. Weather is serving up big obstacles at the moment and that definitely hampering efforts closer to shore.

The report by Mr.Sanders concerning one woman who lost her job at the oyster company due to the oil spill closing the company's operations showed how much of a struggle it is for her and many families to keep making ends meet. The checks sent by BP are not enough for these families to live on and many have to make cutbacks on their expenses. It is tragic and one hopes things will get better for everyone living along the Gulf. Thoughts and Prayers go out to All the Families.

The "Making A Difference" segment by Mr.Tibbles from Chicago showed how this drill team is such a great safe haven for so many teenagers. They certainly are enjoying being part of the drill team and doing a great job. This really gives these teenagers a positive bright future which will lead to a path of success in life. They all looked great at the performances!

Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Good to see you back in New York! Peace to You and to All!

Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!

        Be Well Always!

Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard!

Take Extra Good Care Always Richard and Crew!

        XOXO

What a day in the news. Great show Brian and thanks for letting us see the real people dealing with the crisis. Now I hope Mother Nature helps where man messed up. I've always wondered what was in the rain because it seems to clean after it's stops raining. Just think with all the so called brains getting paid millions yet no one knows how to stop a leak or clean up the mess.

I'm following the Russian Spy case and it's clearly not about US Government secrets. Spies do more then work for Governments it make to some other criminal activity going on. Well these spies got caught while CIA covert agent Plame got busted by Dick Cheney while she was working for Iran secrets.

Ms. Kagan is one smart lady. I watched Senator Coburn question Kagan and he looked/sound stupid it was as if he were trying out for SNL. Roberts was the wrong choice and we're seeing he wasn't qualified for the job. President Reagan knew better then to take Roberts advice during his Presidentcy. Alito will be another Thomas and just vote as he's told. One point Coburn made is correct, trust is gone from the Supreme Court after they stepped in illegal for the 2000 election. Kagan was correct as all Branches of our Government are corrupt because the elected officials are dishonest and don't represent the people, but Banks and Corporations.

Good to see Goldman Sachs finally admitted they played a large corrupt role in the AIG mess. Funny how Goldman's CEO testified they did nothing wrong and now oops he lied. Who's next and please don't let these crooks say God forgive them.

Celine-NJ Thanks so much for you kind words. Yes I'm now here on the East coast and loving it. I like talking to the people and learning what's really going on. London trip is next year this year it's Hogwarts at Universial Studios in Florida. Yes Peaches is making sure I check off my bucket list and you know I'm always adding on the list. smile You guys on the blog are my family and always with me. I miss reading some of the regulars because many are on vacation too but still Lisa always has my up dated report if I miss the Nightly News. Have fun in California and keep an eye on Jerry Moon Beam Brown for me. Oh I went to the midnight showing of the Twilight series with Peaches and her friend. Ok I'm for Jacob not Edward. I'm young at heart but older in age he's got a great body. smile

          Have a great evening all

Hey Brian, nice to see you made it back safe and sound, just one quick question . . . are ya sure that's really oil on the bottom of your show now . . . .? :) !

              Good Evening, Brian

How about Chug-A-Lugging the Plug. I do not have a clue how the engineers would do that,

but, in Revelation 12, Mother Nature helps a damsel in distress by swallowing the flood. Of course,

in this case, Ma is leaving the logistics to the men and it's a nightmare.

                  Nancy, and Robert,

And thank you to WALB for announcing the job fair. I got dressed and was riding around and then I began to feel this: It felt like sparklers in my soul leaping at feeling like somebody. (coming up normally- it was feeling like I was in the processes of making a name for myself- special). So I went into the fair and nothing happened. I said that doesn’t bother me. Okay, then I looked at a list of job openings and I saw Physician Assistant. God whispered it into my ear. My nose turned up and my eyebrows were c lose to mad and I said Uh-Uh….no. And I was on fire. I said I can not believe I am entertaining this idea. I called The Medical College of Georgia and set up an appointment with the Associate Admissions director to discuss my probability of being successful. I told her(because she will see…twice) I was in PA school is 1992 and got ill and had to leave but surviving…..I got a CV Degree and my BS and now am working on my Masters in Counseling….she said that is a drive , so , she agreed. Nancy, you will realize I am getting an interview. I want her to see I personally can so she knows it is not any other focus for me, like my past. In other words it will be my issue not the program’s. I am a talker now……I am not made better by God, He has simple put me back…..to my accrued place, and I believe in me. (2:00 FRIDAY) He said I now do have mental issues.(panic and some fear)

Nancy I have been accepted twice. That looks real bad. To equal it I have to have a severe reason. Do you agree. My new medication after B’ham, is like a miracle drug, really. I feel so good. I still have a little panic issue, and when it happens my vision gets blurry…but I think it is blocking a major attack. My attack yesterday, when at a B’day party with Lorie and 10 girls was so great. When I left, is when the fear flooded my mind. I ‘seen’ how crazy my life is. Major panic….not the letters but the men and families I have broke. I am back when Jesus said to AWAKE, and It put it all outside my hands and I won’t look back…I realized this is my destiny, not work here but to be somebody and be real. Leaving all else behind (men), they have all of it and I hope to be friends. If I write, pray I keep it generic. THANKS.! But the night came and I said I can’t do this, I can just call her tomorrow and get my counseling degree, and I said, God is showing me that this is not my passion---medicine is. I buy books of internal medicine not counseling and I can not quit. I said to my cousin, when I ask her to do a reference for me (very nice one) I almost want to apologize. She said “ The hell with that, you do it, you do everything, do it and lets go do the reference. She said people fail everyday and no one remembers; do what you want. So I felt a major pep-talk. But anyway, last night I read the entire handbook-MCG-(won’t forget BW) and I felt like 98% of all of it I will be good at. All along I have failed, but this is the first time I am myself---bubbly, professional, and will be able to see the magic again. This is where I love people….it is the strangest thing- when I am their provider---PA- and it makes all the difference, when I am whole. I think it is a year away, so wish me luck. I am about to leave……lied to mother. Me and my brother- who was the first I called-crazily- and he lifted me up and said “you do what U want”. We decided to not make mother worry until I know yes or no. I can’t do anything to make them let me in except be who I am. I am not sure about everything, Nancy, but…………in real life, Who Is? Should leave in 2 hours--- money is an issue for me- but God will always provide….so I get a little on my credit card. I don’t spend recklessly. I’ll write yall later. Nancy, will you let me know what you think & any advise---I'll try to hear-----in about 3 hours...while I am on the road..!!

I think this post has a deeper meaning than some have caught onto. The message I received from it with "It doesn't come out" said to me how strong this oil is, and how tough it's going to be to get it out of the Gulf and the beaches.

Thank you for all of last night's broadcast, Brian. I couldn't find the time to comment last night, but I have to mention what a good laugh I got out of the airline story from last night about maggots falling from the overhead bin onto passengers. I'm sorry for the passengers, but hearing this report cracked me up so much I had tears streaming down my face! Now, I think it's safe to say we've heard it all. Oh boy. Thanks for sharing this story, it really lifted my spirits. Priceless. I'd love to have been in yesterday's "whiteboard meeting".

Speaking of "Omaha hello" (shut out to Doni!), wishing Larry King all the best. He's had a remarkable career.

All my best to your colleagues in the Gulf, and as always to Richard in Afghanistan.

                      See you soon, Brian.

Any person who has been paying any attention to the News and to this story, should by now, know the devastation of the oil gushing.
It is Crude. Raw. Thick. Out of control.
                        We know that.
Just like polluted mud, it will cling onto any element it gets a hold of.
What is troubling is its effect.
                        Destruction to everything it touches.
Reading the past DN blogs, you will see each person's concern.

You're right. I worded that so wrong. I was meaning to point out Dave's comment without mention. I wasn't trying to sound like others on the DN blog didn't care or have concerns, I'm sorry if it sounded that way. My apologies. As for that Nightly News viewer who sent a letter and $100 dollars to a woman in Louisiana who lost her job...that is amazing. Let's all say our prayers together for the Gulf. Take care.

hola, brian, awhile back when i planted the garden, i bought a small rosemary herb plant. it had some kind of oily gunk in the soil and the tops of the central shoots were drying out. i probably should have taken it back and gotten another. instead, i thought, well, this is mine, and i kept it. when i planted it, i removed alot of the sticky oily stuff on the top. it's been in the patio pot for awhile now, the sweet basil is HUGE and the tomatoes are GIANTS and have lots of tomatoes on and finally, the little rosemary plant has started to grow. i started watering it from the top, clean off the dust. it's grown about an inch and a half. i bought rosemary seeds back when i was planting the garden, maybe i should sow a few of them. oil-eating bacteria sounds interesting. the lord does provide. i am thinking of the fall migration of birds and the oily marshes, the wetlands. i will be especially tuned in, then. blessings, anna martina

                                  Hello Brian,

I worked for NBC and CBS O&O's for 30 years. I have to say you are putting on the best newscast I've seen in years. Your coverage of the gulf oil has been informative and enlightening. I retired a few years ago and returned to the ancestral home in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Yesterday I visited the boatyard that works on my boat. They've been in business for 60 years. The owner told me he will probably shut it down because of a lack of business. Later I got my haircut. The owner of this once busy shop said she may have to close. When people lose their jobs they don't have to worry about their hair. Just two small examples of once thriving businesses that will like go under. Keep up the good work.

I worked for CBS and NBC O&O's for 30 years. Your coverage of the gulf oil spill has been informative and enlightening. Your Nightly broadcast is the best I've seen in years. After retiring about 6 years ago I moved to the ancestral home in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Let me relate two short stories. Yesterday I visited the boatyard where my boat is hauled once a year for bottom painting. This boatyard has been in business for 60 years. The owner said they may have to close because of a lack of business. Later it was off to get a haircut. The owner of the once busy shop volunteered she may have to shut down. When people lose their jobs they don't worry much about their hair. We know the fishermen, hotels and restaurants are hurting but it goes much deeper than that. Things are getting desperate here.

                                    Keep up the fine broadcasts.

I have a question (or two or three) that I don't believe has been answered in your nightly broadcasts.

Regarding the folks cleaning up the beaches:

                                        1. Are they all volunteers or are they paid "staff"?
                                        2. If they are paid "staff" then who are they working for?
                                        3. If they are receiving compensation, how much ??
                                        4. If these people are not locals, but out-of-towners, where are they staying and who's footing the bill?

I've been out of work for going on 7 months now and it might be worth the drive to the Gulf to pick up some quick work and money.

Thanks for the great reporting, I watch you every night.
