Hope for the Coast, brought to you by Facebook

A new group calling itself "I'm Going to the Gulf Anyway" has recently popped up on Facebook:

This group is committed simply to the idea that instead of canceling your trip to the Gulf for vacation because of the oil spill, we're going anyway. If there is oil when you get there, you could volunteer to help cleanup if needed. Makes sense to help out considering all the great memories you have from going there all these years...

It seems to be functioning as a sort of a pep rally, a small but hopeful gesture of commitment for a region seriously in need of one just about now. Here's one typical post:

For better or worse I will be traveling to the NW. Florida Gulf Coast, supporting the local economy and spending my 4th of July family vacation with my family in Destin. I loved the area pre-oil, I love it now, and I will continue to love an support the area and people post-oil...until it is all better again.

I wish I were there.
I want to be there.
Too many UNKNOWNS!!

We are told the clean up crews are hired by BP and citizens' help is discouraged.

Boy I hate that "Green Oil Company" and I like all big evil corporations that have gotten in bed with the Socialist Liars I hope they go bankrupt.

Hotair has an interesting story about the mother of all skimmers.

what about saltwater farming-fish,crabs,oysters,etc-on land until the waters are clean enough again? get BP to help with that for a time.

hola, mimi, the marshes and the wetlands of louisiana sound like they are the worst off from the mess in the gulf. the wildlife. i hope they get some equipment soon for the clean-up effort. and i hope those relief wells come in ahead of schedule. and i hope that the storm misses the area. my energy was a wee bit better today, am catching up with vacuuming, used boric acid on the carpet overnight to kill the dustmites for my dustmite allergy. even with all of the news of the worsening oil situation on the shore, today, it seems do-able. persistence, equipment, volunteers. it is going to get done. take good care, anna martina

            Anna,
So happy to hear from you. Had a trying / difficult day. Having a problem talking with someone who is very dear to me.
It's a horrible burden. Makes me sad. Painful.
Let's change topics. Hoping that the relief wells are completed sooner than expected.
It is drepessing Anna. Saw Brian Williams web video re the heavy black death oil in the marshes and seems to be getting worse.
DEATH of sea life. Death of a way of life for the good folks of Louisiana. DEATH to wildlife.
Pals and I had plans on lending support to the Gulf. Gov. Crist says the best way to help is to "go to the Gulf and spend, spend."
We had planned on being in the region to do just that, this week,...then my class / school came up
unexpectedly (Mom wants me back in school- has been nagging) and Keneisha's workload prevents her and us from going to support our
fellow Americans. I am sad...so SAD.. about this.
Why does Louisiana have such misfortune???
What a great Monday "Nightly News." Brian's reporting is riveting, touching. I disagree with Polly A, a blogger.
She blogged criticizing Brian and NBC for "waste of energy and waste of ENERGY" --of reporting from the Gulf.
I so love Nightly News Web videos. I appreciate the European News offered and the tidbits.
NBC is my fave. Pals and I fell in love with "Countdown" and "Hardball" in 2008.
Talk radio discussed Afghanistan's new approach. A caller said, in a raw tone- "GET THE HELL OUT of Afghanistan.
We are not winning." The pain is very visible within all the callers.
Brian will be reporting again, Tuesday, from the South. Wish you and I were there to help, lend support.
Anna, how is your garden? Tomatoes, good? Just woke. Fell asleep studying. It is 3:30 Tuesday morning.
            God bless.

hola, mimi, i'm sure you're there in spirit. your ma is right, it's time to study. the gulf will still be there when your class is over on 8/9. lots of tomatoes on the plants. i've had a few cherry tomatoes. i noticed ripe green beans today, i'll put on a long-sleeved shirt tomorrow and look for them from the vines that have reached the top of the tomato cages, they're hiding in the mass of green of the tomato plants and the zuchinni plants. it's a small jungle:-) clear a small space on your dresser and start putting the $ that you are going to spend in the gulf in an envelope so that the trip becomes real to your psyche and you can destress. do some aromatherapy, burn a wonderful candle, that is also called 'candle work', you can meditate and 'send' the light to the crisis as a prayer. 8/9 is right around the corner and you'll have more to spend. i will be checking in to watch brian's new reports. blessings, anna martina

Still wondering if NY, in two weeks, is a good idea..3 day stay...
                Considering school and all.
                Keneisha's Dad lives in NY.
Did ya catch Brian on Tuesday's "Today?"
                Good report from Florida.
Mr. Williams is smart. In fact, NBC has some brains working there.

                  Mr. Charles
Maybe you should apply for a job with NBC as an editor or a producer so that errors such as these never occur.
And- you will suffer less heartburn / mental pain.
                  Make it a good day.

                  Thx

The massive oil spill is, in effect, an invasion by the British, that's what it is. Months ago

President Obama returned the bust of Winston Churchill to Great Britian and I will not second

guess the President why he did it but it sure impressed me. Happy Fourth everybody. Phyllis Kunz
