I know they are trying to save as many birds as possible by cleaning them. But, isn't there anything they can do for those poor dying birds that are so oil-soaked that it's obvious that they will not make it? Letting "nature take it's course" and having them suffer a slow, painful death seems so cruel, especially because this is our oil mess-not theirs. A person will put down a pet so that it won't suffer, why not do the same for these suffering animals.
I dont normally respond to things of this nature, but im just appalled how the big-wigs of BP oil are just sitting back still raking in millions of dollars a DAY while they are slowly killing our ocean!! hello people, the oceans are the only things left on earth that havent been destroyed or severely affected by mankind. people do not realize the importance of the oceans to our human LIFE! the only reason that our congress hasnt made bp more liable for this mess is because bp is padding their pockets with millions as well. the LOVE of money is the root of all evil, why do we destroy our only earth, just to make money, just to rip off all those who use bp products and services?

Dear Brian,
I watch your evening news show every night. Tonight when I was watching and heard at the end of your show your request for donations to help clean the mess up in the Gulf I was aplauled. I do not think that any organizations should be requesting finanacial help. The bill needs to be sent directly to BP, for all the clean up, including the wildlife who are dying, the beaches that can no longer be used, the shrimp boats that can not go out and do there jobs and make a living, etc, etc, you get my point. The wildlife organization needs to request funds from BP. I feel so terrible that wildlife is dying due to the creediness of a company that has made billions of dollars. Those people who live on the gulf are part of the population that has made that company billions and now this company needs to put its pants on like us small people and take responsibility for their carelessness. They need to pay for all damages to all living things.
I totally agree. BP should have an open check book and be providing funds to any of the organizations that need money to clean up the Gulf. It should be BP and not the taxpayers funding whatever needs there are.
To Patty Pixley,
In response to your blantant, judgemental, and quite stupid e-mail.I happen to be a "part of that population that lives on the Gulf"" as a professional flight nurse in the miltary and in the civilan sector. My family has lived on the Gulf for many generations. Do you use gas? Do you have a car? boat? ATV? Then you my dear are also a "part of this population" that is keeping the drillers in work. If you want to change this greed, then help find an alternative source of fuel, period. Be a part of the solution instead a problem.
bravo michelle...i also work the gulf and oilfield....i hear a lot of stupid coments...give up ur cars atv boats water...thats right...gas and oil provide power for water to be pumped to ur houses...make up phones and anything plastic or rubber....god get a grip america...it is disgusting to see ourr gulf and beaches messed up....but lets not hold everyone hostage due to one or two peoples actions...no one wants nuclear power...wind and solar are not ready yet....and that hybrid car...still uses petroleum.. sure wish every oil company would shut down for one week...see what u would do when gas and oil was 20 bucks a gallon...think about that all you people....we have enough unemployment in this country so lets put another 40 thousand people out of work OBAMA...that will fix BP....get a grip
What about driving less? After all, many of us stop by BP gas stations to fill up our cars. I am not defending BP by any means, but they are drilling in the gulf and everywhere else to satisfy our demand for oil- in some ways we are all to blame. There certainly isn't a better time to make a change to carpool, riding a bike or using public transportation.
I say, hire some of the unemployed to help clean up where BP isn't helping. I know no one would ever be able to get BP to help, but I think all the employees of BP should be out there helping clean up and stay there until all is done and pay them min wage. It's all there fault.
I am suggesting that BP hire unemployed to harvest marsh grasses and native species from undisturbed marshes while they are still pristine. Harvesting them, and the soils, they live in will give Lousiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida something to work with once these states can get the totally destroyed marshes cleaned up. These grasses and plants and their soils contain the microorganisms necessary to feed shrimp, clams, crabs, fish and native birds. BP can also lease property from residents who live upstream along rivers, creeks, streams and marshes that are not contaminated with oil in which to temporarily plant these harvested grasses and plants. This will give the cleaned up coastline and marshes some seedlings with which to start new crops of native species.
Look. This is a numbers game. Tonight you reported 85 birds saved and over 500 dead. While I can understand that it would be ideal to have specially trained personnel for wildlife rescue - this is not an ideal situation and those in charge should be embracing volunteers, not turning them away. Surley it is better to have untrained personnel than a skeleton crew.
This mentality occurred during Hurricane Katrina. Red Cross chapters created barriers such as requiring a 2 week class. I flew myself at my cost (airfare, hotel, car and food) to San Antonio and I was among the first volunteers to show up. I was put to work - working the chow line, taking the temperature of palettes of sandwiches, helping the elderly to the bathroom, sorting clothing - you name it, I was willing to do it. I went from cot to cot, inviting evacuees to use my personal cell phone to called loved ones. There is always work to be done. Always a way to contribute. Why beuracracy makes it so hard for volunteers to be a willing, hard-working extra pair of hands, I will never understand. BTW - I called the 800 line for volunteering for the oil spill. More BS. Unacceptable.
I can't believe at how apalled I am feeling for the CEO of BP. I would like to see him explain his comment last week on wanting to "get on with his life". The buck stops with him, and he needs to take total responsibility for this huge tragedy. Did they not have a plan in mind for possible accidents like this to occur? There is NO excuse good enough that will work on any of us. This country is ANGRY and wants something done NOW. Pay the people you are putting out of work to help clean it up. Pay BIG to the National Wildlife Federation and others to save whatever wildlife is left. You just may save face by just coming clean....You already have 11 lifes lost, years of restoration, about a billion angry people, not to mention, the ones not buying your oil anymore, so can your conscience handle any more?
Brian,
I was doing some research and found something that has been used in Texas several years ago. I can't believe that this is not being used. The Texas Land Office used this on a tanker spill that was near Galveston ,Texas.
The company is Ultra Tech. They have a material that is made with natural microbes . The microbes eat the oil and then change into a non-toxic that is eaten by the marine life. This product shows that it helps in recovery of the ocean and wetlands in 6 to 12 weeks. The microbes keep eating until the oil has gone. There can be reapplication.
I have been trying to find a way to get this info to the right people. The company has on their site they are producing more to have for the spill. The thing is, I don't know if anyone has called them. This product should have been started in the wetland when the oil first showed up. It still can be.
Please take a look at this and please get this info to the parrishes that need it.

Also, they have brochures of this product that can be printed off.
Thank you for your time.
I think we are all going to have to stick together , and help anyway we can weather donating , volunteering and work together to try an ensure a better future for our children ,and the poor animals that are paying the price for the greediness thats been going on for yrs . We might just need to live alittle poor for awhile to repair the damaged thats been done .If it can be repaired at least for our great great granchildren.
They could stop the leak by dropping an immense cone of concrete down over the pipe and then piling more weight on top of the cone. This would compress mud and soil and force it into the pipe to stop the oil. I have sent drawings of this to CARE 11 TV in Minneapolis so they could forward it to the proper authorities
Please mention the efforts of Tri State Bird Rescue in Delaware. They have been leading the wildlife rescue efforts since this all happened !!!!!
I'd like to know more about why they haven't put as many ships as possible out there to suck up the oil as John Hofmeister mentioned re the past massive Suadi Arabian oil spill. (What Saudi Arabian oil spill? I'd never heard about it until he mentioned it....)
Good work as usual! DLB
i am a 25 yeah plumber from kansas. I proposed an idea to BP on may 25th. It is a detailed plan to plug the leaking well. i submitted a sketch and synopsis to them. The first time I called them the woman on the phone "Annie" said they were not interested in ideas to plug the leak because they wanted to harvest as much oil from the well as possible. i got them to email me the form anyway and i filled it out. I have been posting my plan all over facebook and the web with the sketch. i called BP back yesterday and asked how the review of my plan was going. the woman on the phone asked someone in the background, "there is a gentleman from kansas asking about his plan would should i tell him? the voice replied, "YEAH HIM AND EVERY OTHER SMALL TOWN IDIOT, JUST TELL HIM WE ARE STILL REVIEWING THEM." I have alot of experience in this area and i am confident my plan will work. And as of today they still havent stopped it and are still trying to salvage as much oil as possible at the expense of our marine life mammals and eco system. Hopefully someone who reads this will help me get my plan to the right person. thank you for your time. I can be reached by email fredd311@yahoo.com or my facebook page (joe caldart )

Brian ~ Thanks so much for having a sample of the BP spill pipe on your desk. That was one of the best pieces of reporting we've seen. Nothing like the real thing to put things in perspective. Whoever, thought that one up deserves to get more attention from your group. Keep up the good work. (and ask that guy/gal for more ideas!)
For those of you reading this that didn't see it: It was a short piece of pipe 21 inches in diameter (outside -- the inside diameter was 19.5") It was huge and just sitting on Brian's desk for all to see. Brian went on to say words to the effect that the flow of oil through it was like a blast -- better than a fire hose at full tilt. Oil and gas pouring out at an explosive rate.
Everything being done as far is not enough, it will never be enough, until the well is completely stopped. Waiting for the relief wells to be finished is to long. How do you think this will help, think of a water hose with 3 leaks, one in the middle and one on each side. In order to stop the leak in the middle, is to stop it completely. How will they do it if they cannot do it right now. It is obvious BP wants the oil and is still trying to contain the well so the oil can still be pumped out of this well since it takes a long time to drill. In order to stop this situation completely is to nuke it. The leak has to be stopped completely so the ongoing clean up can start being contained. The wild life that is dieing a horrible death will stop, I know other wild life and ocean life will die. But the oil clean up will start to be easier. Right now the battle is being lost completely they can never keep up period. The Obama administration is also at blame here due to money they seek to make the longer the spill is leaking. They are also to Blame due to the fact the clean up will not cost the Government anything. The promises they make to the American citizens in Louisiana will be covered until the Government is guaranteed payment. Like I said nuking the leak will help everybody who lives next to the coast in the gulf of Mexico, and the money from the Government if and when it arrives it will help for the wages lost and damage for the environment. Now remember BP does not live near here so their objective is to pump the well, need I say more.
I'd love to donate but except that the cost of dealing with the wildlife will have to be funded by the thugs who caused this disaster, BP. My donations will only enable BP Excecs and share holders to pocked more of the spoils they enjoy from a nation addicted to petrolium products.
There is an organization matteroftrust.org, that is collecting hair and fur and nylon stockings to make booms. There is a video on their website that shows how much more effective the hair/fur booms are at collecting the oil than the manmade ones. All necessary info is on their site to register to help. I would also suggest to those deploying the booms to use these hair booms first, they have a lot just sitting in warehouses waiting to be used.
Fellow Citizens:
Follow this link to a Face Book Solutions page. See 2 Immediate Solutions that are outlined with Diagrams on how this hole can be plugged in 5 - 7 days.
http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/BP-Oil-Gusher-Solution-Fire-BP-Build-a-Sarcophagus/108197122559613
The 1st is to wrap it in mesh wire fencing that gets progressively finer. This spreads the force of the oil over a wider surface area making it more manageable to contain and suppress. It's analogous to wrapping an ACE bandage around your knee.
Next, if necessary, scuttle (lower down into the water) old Navy ships right on top of the gusher. They weigh from 30 - 150 million lbs. The gusher is said to be ½ million lbs of upward pressure. You do the math, it’s so simple. If you can drop rocks into water, you can do this!
Employ a flotilla of US Navy, Coast Guard, Marines and Private vessels to drop additional fill-in debris around and the on top, creating a sarcophagus. Fill in with underwater cement. Don't leave our fate in the incompetent hands of BP Engineers. It's our problem America and we must save ourselves! Quit trying to blame and lawsuit our way to the solution. Waiting and watching places our fate in their hands! The Normandy invasion had 7,000 ships moving together across the English Channel, completed in a matter of hours, not days and weeks … and we can’t do the same? We’ve already been there and done that!
We've put 5 manned space missions on the Moon, they've never even tried. The moon is a quarter million miles away and back. This hole is a few miles out to sea and 1 mile deep. That's nothing! Our Glomar Explorer Mining Ship plucked a Soviet Submarine from 3.5 miles below the surface of the Ocean. This Hole is 1 mile deep! And we can't plug it just like a 3 year old kid stops up a toilet? You cannot be Serious! We can do this!
For my gift this Father's Day, I decided to donate in my dad's name to one of the organizations listed above who will be cleaning up these poor birds affected by the oil spill. Instead of spending money on another stupid tie, this year let's help our innocent animal friends, who are suffering in the gulf.

Brian,
I love your show and I watch it religiously.
One thing that frustrates me about this oil spill is the lack of execution by our government. I don't understand why we can't cut through the red-tape and hire our own skimmer boats, tankers, equipment and start on barrier islands right now. Then, we can just send BP the bills as they come in. It's obvious that BP doesn't have the massive amount of resources required to handle this crisis. Why can't our President expedite an executive order to put all those out-of-work fisherman to work NOW and get the re-reimbursement by BP later. Just do the work and send them the bill. If we don't, the hemorrhaging will only get worse. And if BP refuses to pay the bills, they lose the ability to work and sell their products and services in the future.
Thanks again for your sincere coverage of these events.
